Guest guest
I honestly cannot see how the two diseases are related. Hepatitis is a liver disease and diabetes is either/both insulin resistance or reduced/no insulin production from the pancreas. You might be intersted in joining a group that I am currently involved in, ABC-Diabetes-International You'll find a lot of friendly members willing to exchange information as well as a ton of links explaining a *lot* about diabetes, causes, treatments, and more. Best regards from Rochester, NY Jim Anybody In The Group Have Diabetes Also? I have Hepatitis C & I am also Diabetic. I believe somehow these are related--does anyone in the group have both? Guest guest
There are a couple of folks I know who have said they developed diabetes after treatment for their hepatitis, but it could be that it was an underlying problem that was yet undetected. Guest guest
Well, I've had an ultrasound and endoscopies (which revealed a few small varicose veins in my esophagus, so I do have a bit of cirrhosis. Unfortunately, despite having income and resources below what the VA wants, I still have to pay co-payments to the VA as my income last year was above that cutoff. On top of that, IRS claims I made $2800 more than I actually did, so I'm paying off $500 to IRS (including fica, Medicare, and income tax). The VA wants $250 or they will not pay for treatment and I can't afford the drugs if I use my retiree health care as the 30% co-payment would be prohibitive on the interferon. So I'm simply another old person falling through the cracks .... Best regards from Rochester, NY Jim Re: Anybody In The Group Have Diabetes Also? Guest guest
Sorry it's common to have both. Liver affects all organs and also tx. Lots of hep c people have diabetes some were tx induced others actually caused by hepc and the liver. risktkr4567 <no_reply > wrote: > > > > > I honestly cannot see how the two diseases are related. Guest guest
I hadn't thought of that. Although a number of folks in the diabetes group have other problems (circulation), I'm not aware of any with hep, although there may be some. I got heptitis from (I assume as I don't have any risk factors including operations) Vietnam - which would be almost 40 years ago. I have no other health problems at this time <keep fingers crossed> Best regards from Rochester, NY Jim Re: Re: Anybody In The Group Have Diabetes Also? Sorry it's common to have both. Guest guest
I'm not too sure. They keep changing the rules. Yes, I was in country, but not for long (most was aboard a command ship off Vietnam). ly, the government has cut funding so much for the VA that things are quite nasty. I keep getting different answers. A friend of mine was getting a degenerative bone disease back in 1991, but he couldn't prove where he was in Vietnam (he was exposed to agent orange) and the records of troop movements were a microfiche copy of IBM punch cards! So, they refused treatment. Perhaps things will change, but we haven't given enough tax cuts to the rich yet. I'm fighting to keep my private insurance, but couldn't afford the co-payments on the interferon for the hep-c. Meanwhile, the VA is threatening to cut me off unless I pay them $250.00 (which, at part time only minimum wage employment, I can't cough up). I guess I just don't have enough education, although I must admit I'm tired of helping others who are trying to understand calculus. I'm also tired of helping others (all for free, of course) who have computer problems. They really should insist that their pay-for-service technician is astute enough to re-install the anti-virus and firewall!!! Find someone else to fight the next war. Best regards from Rochester, NY Jim RE: Re: Anybody In The Group Have Diabetes Also? Lots of Vietnam service men have hepc. VA has huge site about it lots of info. Pat..Fontana, Calif. Guest guest
Jim, do you recall what vaccinations you were required to have when you were in service? ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
Guest guest
Actually I don't. I do recall I lost my shot card on my way to Vietnam and had to get over a dozen shots when I got there LOL. Guest guest
> > Jim, do you recall what vaccinations you were required to have when you were > in service? Hi all, long time no post, but I'm still here, lurking around the corner! Got my monthly blood test results, all over the board as usual, and go see my Doc tomorrow for his thoughts, if any lol. When I went to 'Nam in '66, I surely remember at least 8 or 9 shots in a row, and they used that f*ng air gun, which is NEVER cleaned. That'd one reason 'Nam Vets are far more likely to develop the disease, as well as those exposed to orange (who the hell knows if they were exposed to agent orange?). I sure don't as I travelled all over the northern areas in " I " Core, from DaNang, my base, inland and northward. Few may know for sure, and it really doesn't matter, cause we all have to deal with it over and over again, with HCV being a constant reminder. I'm curious how many Vietnamese have this dreaded disease? Probably surviving on ancient herb supplements alone and doing quite well! Guest guest
Yep, I suspect that air gun. One guy, 2 ahead of me, jumped and the air gun ripped his arm pretty good. Quite a bit of blood and, as you stated, no cleaning. Of course the VA has " informational " booklets stating that air guns aren't the problem, but go figure why Vietnam vets have 10 *times* the infection rate of the normal population. I'll guarantee not that many were handling dead bodies (about the only way they'll grant free treatment). When I lost my shot card, they used needles. Nice and sterile. I got at least a dozen (for some reason I keep thinking it was 14, but that was 39 years ago). Dang, I'm getting old. Which is a lot better than a number of folks who served over there. Guest guest
God bless you, brother, for surving and surviving. Life's a b**tch sometimes. Volunteer, and you get sick with the Dragon or other diseases. Yesterday, my Doc told be to begin preparing myself mentally for a liver transplant, due to my increasingly worse blood tests. Been treated 3 times in 10 years, so that's a bust. So now I'm going thru the typical depression cycle (why me, etc.) My wife says it's because I can handle it! So far she's right. I just have to work on turning my attitude around, once again. That'll take awhile, but it WILL happen. Then I'll be ready to take on all surgeries and treatments hell has thought of, lol. Stay in touch, Jim, and best of luck. > > Yep, I suspect that air gun. One guy, 2 ahead of me, jumped and the air gun > ripped his arm pretty good.
