Hi ,

I also have the hearing loss and I have CMT type 1B. My entire family

also has hearing loss, or actually deafness due to the fact that they are all

older than me. When my hearing problems started as a teenager, my Mom would

always say I had " Selective hearing " , and that I heard what I wanted to hear. We

had no idea then about my having CMT. I also went through many, many hearing

tests at that time, only to hear that they were normal. It did not show in my

hearing tests until I was in my 20's. Somewhere between my 20's and my30's my

hearing tests showed a very strange pattern of hearing loss described by one

Audiologist as possibly being caused from a Disease? We still at that point did

not know about the CMT! When I found out 2 years ago after finding my natural

Dad, and his family that all of them with CMT were also Deaf, I informed the

Dr's I was seeing and found out it is all part of the CMT! I still hear now, but

it is just like the CMT, slowly progressing, and I do not hear well at all on

the telephone, and background noises also make hearing harder. As far as the

loud noises, I do not hear better when someone speaks louder, I hear BEST when

people talk slower, and pronouce their words correctly while talking face to

face with me. I can't say that loud noises are too loud, just annoying, things

do not sound clearer to me when spoken louder. The Auditory nerve is a

Peripheral nerve I am told that is why it is due to my CMT. For me, Tones are

the trouble in most cases, I hear womens voices better than Mens, and that also

depends on the person speaking, if they mumble, have no teeth, or don't move

lips much, then I'm lost for what they just said! It seems like words go in my

ears, and somewhere between traveling that nerve to the brain to understand what

is said, the words get lost! That's the best way to describe it! I hope this

helps you, just make sure to mention it all to the Dr., or print it up if you

wish!

Take care, love, Tina!:-)

Subject: [] CMT and temporary hearing loss?

is it possible to have temporary hearing loss due to CMT? my son at

times will complain of not being able to hear to well. we have taken

him to the doctor the next day several times when he says this and

they can find no infection and no hearing loss. then a few days after

he will complain of the same problems. and then at other times he

says things are to loud for him and hurt his ears. he wont flush a

toilet in a public restroom because he says it's to loud and hurts

his ears. anyone else have problems like this? i don't take anything

he says lightly anymore, and i don't assume he is being a normal 4

yr. old. i think there is more to it than that. it's not just when i

tell him to do something he doesn't want to do, or when he is being

punished. he does this just when i am talking to him. or asking if he

would like to have some candy even lol. we all know they want to hear

that. just an example.
