Hey , I never considered the fact that my CMT was SO bad in Jr and

High school might be connected to growth spurts. More for me to review

my past with! Thank you for the clarity! ~ " Mellow " G

Hi ,

Thanks for the info. It's interesting that you should mention that as my son

has always had significant growth spurts, he is currently 6' 2 " and 1/2 " and the

half inch occurred over the last 3 months. Not sure how much more growing the

boy has left! I'll ask the next Dr. we see.

Ed -

It's funny you should mention the growth spurts. We were in the ER

twice last year with such excruciating pain from growth spurts. At

first we all thought he actually had a blood clot form because what

he was describing sounded exactly like what I felt when I had my

first attack of phlebitis. It turned out to be the growth

spurts...but it was pretty scary and awful for him. We have since

supplemented his diet with a multi-vitamin and vitamin C in addition

to ingested calcium (milk, yogurt etc.) and he is doing much better

with it!

Thanks for sharing...it so helps to know he is not alone in what he

goes through.

Hello All,

I am 75 now and well remember the 18 month growth spurt that made me 6'6 " tall.

It was around the age of 12 and I grew one inch per month or if you will 1/32 "

per day. The weaknesses and awkwardness were very serious. My daily schedule

involved getting up at 8:30 AM going to school, walking my paper route, and

going to bed at 7:30 PM every day the same hours. My father worked 7 1/2 days a

week leaving before I woke up and coming home after I was asleep.

The biggest dietary issues were the three quarts of milk I downed every day and

the two quart pan fulls of hot cereal I ate for breakfast. This was the same

time my foot deformities showed up and I was not diagnosed until 43 years later.

My best advice for anybody doing the same is to mind your body posture and

muscle building which must occur at this time in a youngster's life. Adequate

sleep is important, our family doctor advised, " Let him sleep, his body is tired

from just growing. " The orthopedic doctors could not help then and in the 40's

CMT was not widely known and HNPP even less.

Much later on while investigating a vision loss in the right eye a neurologist

found an enlargement of the sella where the pituitary glands reside and surmised

that I might of had a tumor in that area.

Yes that is my son. Last year he would come home from school and sleep for

hours. He was just warn out. Now that you mention it he grew a lot taller last

year. I bet that coupled with the large school campus could have been the reason

for his extreme fatigue.

He is going a lot better this year. He gets out of school early this year and is

not sleeping as much.

(now 17) is still suffering from growth spurts! He is currently 6'1 ish

and when he is having a spurt all he does is sleep. I actually go into his room

to make sure he's still breathing. It is a deep deep sleep.

My other son, who doesn't have CMT actually has stretch marks on his back from

rapid growth spurts. At 13 he is 5'11....the doc is amazed....5 inches in a

year. He requires 9 hours of sleep a night during a spurt, but never ever takes

a nap.

The need for sleep does abate when the spurt is over for ...hopefully it

will for your son as well. The fatigue from the CMT varies with his activity

level and I guess we are stuck with managing that as best we can.

However, they are both eating me out of house and home!!!
