No, I don't have anything but property to pay taxes on. I have always gotten the

homestead exemption but this past year the state nor county could afford to fund

it.

Jane,

Given that your income has been very low I assume you will not have any

taxes to worry about but for some it is a consideration

I'm so very happy for you Jane. :)

You will be getting gobs of mail from SS telling you all

about what you are getting and whatnot. You will also

get a temporary password for the Social Security website

where you can check all your information and make

changes as needed. You will also want to set up

a separate checking account somewhere for your

automatic Social Security deposits.

Creditors cannot touch your social security money.

I was referring to income taxes on your social security..

I am not sure of the dollars but if your income is over 35,000 or

so(including the lump sum you will be getting you will be taxed.. It is on a

rolling scale so I imagine you will not pay anything or not much at all...

But, here is a kicker.. they will take out social security tax..

Having said that, you will be getting the money so you really can relax

some..

Paying taxes on your benefits

Some people who get Social Security have to pay taxes on their benefits.

About one-third of our current beneficiaries pay taxes on their benefits.

You will be affected only if you have substantial income in addition to your

Social Security benefits.

a.. If you file a federal tax return as an “individual†and your income is

more than $25,000, you have to pay taxes.

b.. If you file a joint return, you may have to pay taxes if you and your

spouse have a combined income that is more than $32,000.

c.. If you are married and file a separate return, you will probably pay

taxes on your benefits.

Greg, I'm glad you got the SSD but am so very sorry and angry that you suffered

under the hands of a surgeon. I hope the doctor is going to pay for his

mistakes.

What happened to you is one example of why I will avoid surgery unless it's

absolutely necessary to prevent permanent spinal cord damage.

I had my SSD hearing on the 15th of this month. I represented myself as the

evidence of my horrible back condition spoke for itself. After about 15 minutes

the Judge said she is issuing a favorable decision and stopped asking anymore

questions. Yesterday I received the letter of her favorable decision. I think

it varies from Judge to Judge how each case is handled. In my case though, I

had two doctors medical opinions that I was permanently and totally disabled due

to what the Surgeon did to me during my last surgery. I had a simple Spinal

Cord Stimulator installed in my Thoracic spine. I woke the next day with

horrible banding pain around my chest, lost bowel and bladder function and

excruciating pain radiating up my spine and around my chest. I ended up having

an emergency laminectomy from T7 up to T10 which did not alleviate any of the

symptoms. They did a CT Myelogram and found that the surgeon had partially

flattened my spinal cord and an independent Neorosurgeon found that the Surgeon

had cut and damaged nerves in my T-Spine that resulted in the horrible pain and

now intermittent paralysis in my right leg. I am 41 years old and will have to

use a can and walker for the rest of my life. With all the evidence I was able

to get an favorable decision but each Judge thinks differently but has strict

guidelines he/she has to follow.

Greg, sorry to chime in late on this. I'm glad you got your SSI but

it is such a pittance compared to what you've been put through and

will have to go through the rest of your life. I haven't taken the

time to read all of the threads yet, but since you have independent

Doctors saying what happened, are you planning a malpractice suit?

The $1400 or whatever you get a month is nothing compared to what you

have been handed.

On another note, your mention of banding pain around your chest is

interesting to me. I just went through a Stress test and EKG's etc

because I'm experiencing chest pain that I thought may be a heart

attack. I've had 3 surgeries with fusion and hardware on my Lumbar

and another on my neck. I recently have been experiencing the chest

pain which also goes down my left arm and into my jaw & head. I get

it at rest in bed, not when I'm exerting myself. So possibly it is nerve pain.

God Bless you Greg and may you find some healing and some justice. Dave

Greg, you ought to sue that doctor. I was done in by a dentist, and now i am

disabled for life 49 years old. At the time i was TO sick to sue. I regret not

trying. Its been ten years since the original injury and is too late. If you can

muster up enough strength between dealing with your pain, go see a lawyer and

find out. Lots of lawyers will talk to you once for free. Then you could see

what kind ofchance you may have, and take it from there. I know its hard to

think about when your not feeling good. cindy

Jane,

Thank you for your response - I feel so alone sometimes. I know this will

be difficult to say the least, but I can no longer work. I also know this

will take some time to accomplish.

Kindest regards,

Sulisha

I appologize for not responding to all the wonderful responses sooner. I have a

lot of trouble sitting in front of the computer so I have respond when I am

having on of the rare moments that the pain is just tolerable enough to sit and

type. The banding pain around my chest is from the T7/T8 nerves/dermatomes that

the surgeon damaged. It is a band about 2 inches wide that goes from my back

around just beneath my peck muscles. It is an excruciating pain but the worst

part is that it is extremely sensative to anything touching it. If anyone

touches it with their hand/fingers it feels like I am being burned by a blow

torch. I can touch it but if anyone even comes near it I get very defensinve

since the pain is so bad. My new pain doc decided he wanted to touch it last

month and I broke out in tears and swatted his had away. This is so much worse

than the sciata and horrible pain down my legs. Also after the surgeon got done

with me or should I say BUTCHERED be I have the horrible

burning/stinging/shooting pains in my thoracic and up through my shoulder

blades.

As far as a Lawyer and Malpractice..... I though for the past few months

that my wife and I did not really believe in suing or getting lawyers involved.

BUT after wathcing how badly this has affected my 4 young children and seeing

them suffer from not having the Daddy who can pick them up, hold them or even do

the most trivial things like throwing a ball or taking them fishing or go on the

Treasure Hunts and have the weekend special time with Daddy anymore.....it has

really hurt me in ways that is so hard to express. So YES we are now working

with Lawyers who state that the Malpractice is written in black and white, the

damage that was done wis due to the stupidity of the surgeon, and the 4 level

laminectomy was done out of his desperation and was unfounded. This is not to

mention the surgeon having me sign the surgical papers while I was in a morphine

coma state and was woken up just enough to sign the surgical release which I do

not remember....no one even contacted my wife or family to let them know what he

was about to do either.

OK...I have vented quite a bit and am now in a good bit of pain so I need

to sign off. I will try to be back on more frequently and post more often.

Take Care,

Greg

Greg,

It is terrible what you are going through. I too do not believe in frivolous law

suits but yours is not frivolous, damage has been done and you should be

compensated. I would try to get not only money to pay medical bills to fix you

as much as possible but money for pain and suffering. You have lost precious

time with your children that can't be gotten back. I hope you win your case, you

deserve it.

Another medical nightmare, this happens too often and is completely preventable

if the medical field would put the patients first and be honest with them.

I don't understand exactly why you had surgery around the thoracic spine or

remember much about your symptoms but as you said, the legs and sciatic nerve

were affected. I hope they pay dearly for being such fools and trying to cover

up their mistakes. They are all at fault. The members of your family were the

ones who should have been contacted prior to any procedure and everyone should

be compensated for their mental anguish.

I pray someone can help relieve your pain. Where on earth did this surgery take

place?

This reminds me even more to be aware and active in my own health care. We need

to be educated and not take the word of doctors as gospel.

I though for the past few months that

my wife and I did not really believe in suing or getting lawyers involved. BUT

after wathcing how badly this has affected my 4 young children and seeing them

suffer from not having the Daddy who can pick them up, hold them or even do the

most trivial things like throwing a ball or taking them fishing or go on the

OK...I have vented quite a bit and am now in a good bit of pain so I need to

sign off. I will try to be back on more frequently and post more often.

Take Care,

Greg
