Guest guest
I don't know what's right for you and possibly your doctor or physical therapist should recommend.? My physical therapist told me to sleep on a very flat pillow and to try to sleep on my back.? Both have been a real challenge! Best of luck on getting some relief, Dianne need help w/ pillow decision Hi everyone. My name is . I'm new to the group. I was just told on tuesday that I have 2 disks with minor degeneration and arthritis. I've had a couple of really horrible muscle spasms in my back/shoulder/neck on the left side for the past 6 months. Since college (about 10 years) i have had what I thought was muscle tension in my neck and headaches. Last weekend I woke up really early in the morning with a really sharp pain in my cervical spine. It always used to be just stiff muscles, so when I had a different type of pain I got really nervous that the shoulder stand I'd done in yoga class on saturday had caused me to herniate a disk or something. So I went in to see an urgent care MD and he ordered xrays. He called me with the results and told me I should follow up with my PCP. I've been seeing a chiropracter since january with about 80% improvement (until this weekend). I've spent a lot of money on a latex pillow that was supposed to help my neck. I started practicing yoga for strenghtening my muscles and improving my posture. I've done everything I've read about or been told, yet my neck is just getting worse. I have no idea what has caused this to happen. I'm 29, so it's a little early for arthritis. I'm getting worried. I need to try to stop this. So, I'm hoping someone can help me decide what type of cervical pillow I should get. I don't want to spend the money to get something that doesn't work. Does anyone have any advice on pillows? I'm trying to decide between the arc4life traction pillow and the tricore pillow.

I've had fusion surgery on my neck and have chronic pain in my neck and scapula area of my right shoulder among other areas. What works for me is a Bone shaped pillow. One that is semi-rounded and fatter at the ends than the middle. This allows me to rest my neck comfortably while it supports it on either side. Mine is ancient kind of like Linus's blanket from Peanuts. My Wife constantly threatens to throw it away, but nothing else works as good for me. I also supplement it with a cold gel ice pack wrapped it a light towel, generally on my shoulder blade, but sometimes on my spine or neck. This helps alot. We have 9 in a little dorm fridge freezer upstairs so I can keep changing the out at night as they warm up. This is what works for me. Guest guest
Hi ! I am pretty new to the group as well. Just joined a couple weeks ago. Welcome! I have learned a lot in the past few weeks just reading other people's posting. This group has been wonderful and very informative. I agree with Dianne that your PT should be the one to recommend the best pillow for you. I too have spent A LOT of money on pillows over the years and like Dianne, have found a very flat pillow to be the most comfortable. I have been dealing with neck issues for a little over 3 years now (not nearly as long as many others in this group). Started out with 2 bulging discs but only got worse with PT and chiro care. Within a year they were both herniated and I had surgery. I had the surgery 2 years ago and now I recently found out that I have another 2 bulging discs above my fusion, degenerative disc disease in my entire neck, and issues with C1 and C2. So basically my entire neck is messed up. I am only 30 years old. Unfortunately, I did nothing wrong and could have done nothing to prevent this. I have a very straight neck. No curvature what-so-ever so this is inevitable for me.. We all have different stories, different issues but one thing in common... PAIN! Good luck with your treatment plan! Guest guest
, I was at an earlier age when my neck and back started acting up. I am 42 now with two neck surgeries and a lumbar-sacral. Somewhere over the past few years I have lost one inch of height, go figure and I am probably facing a few more spinal surgeries. Are the surgeries better than a chiro doc? I don' really know except the two professions will do what they can to keep you from the other. With regards to my pain I have been taking morphine about 10 plus years now. As far as arthritis goes, one is never to young to have it or get it. If you ever want to talk further I would be more than happy to lend an ear. Also one of my problems is numbness while using my hands and fingers abdeven typing this my hands are numb. Someone please have mercy on me and put me out of my misery. Just an empty request ppl! Guest guest
Hey. i absolutely KNOW for a fact that my medical doctors do not KNOW or do they understand what i have. I have a severe reverse curve and THAT causes the problems. i was in the hospital for an odd ball infection, so while i was there i was telling all the doctors about my neck and what it does. They said " we dont know how to treat THAT " they never ran across anything like my case. So there you have it. So a chiro saved my life, and another lady had one almost KILL her. But in my case. Hey if the guy was the only one who listened when i was crawling on the floor. I'll stick with him. I had every FANCY test imaginable. And it was a man who felt it with his hands. that found it. Medical doctors think if it doesnt show up on the blood work, there is no problem! Guest guest
My experience has been very similar except I was referred from Neurosurgeon to Pain Doctor. I guess I should be glad they dont want to do surgery- (I have never had surgery), but I suffer from a lot of the same things that those with surgery do, so I guess its just not a guarantee that surgery can relieve you. I think the Docs just dont know how to cure, they have ideas and they practice on us. [PainInTheNeck- Back] need help w/ pillow decision Hi everyone. My name is . I'm new to the group. Guest guest
I would stay away from Chiro Quacks. They just want your money and If they are going to work usually it works within a few weeks not months. Never sleep on your back. Shoulder and switch at night if you can to different shoulder. Stretching mildly at first and working your way up is best remedy along with mild exercise concentrating on posture more than speed. Tension in the neck is usually caused by stress and like everyone puts there stress in different places. Need to learn to relax otherwise you get RSD Repetitive strain disorder. Good luck Quoting dadams1959@...: > I don't know what's right for you and possibly your doctor or > physical therapist should recommend.? Guest guest
Hi Group, It's me Debbie, just checking in quickly...I hope everyone is hanging in there. I'm sorry I've been so M.I.A. lately, busy with the storm in Florida and GEEEEZ! It's taking it's toll on me. This post caught my attention because along with my fusion, four bad herniated cervical discs, loss of curve, spinal stenosis, bone spurs, nerve damage, I also arthritis too...these are just the cervical problems. I guess it must be different for every person, and perhaps the doctors just really don't know what to tell us but I was told specifically TO sleep on my back (and to use just one pillow also). Maybe it's because I have lumbar herniations (degenerative ones) but my pain is much worse in my neck (and lower back) if I try to sleep on my side. Also told to stay away from chiro's too, but I just think it's odd that the docs are telling us different things on this topic. I do have to wake up at least a few times throughout the night to move around a little bit or I will be all locked up in the AM...I wonder though if there's a reason for the different " how to sleep " question with cervical problems. I know I had a hard time getting used to sleeping on my back when all of this started with me, but now I can't sleep any other way. Just one of those 'Hmmm' things and thought I'd add my two cents. BTW, I have one of the cervical support tempurpedic pillows and several other types from soft to firm and I have to switch them around depending on what works best at the moment. Love and Hugs to all of you! Debbie > > > I would stay away from Chiro Quacks. They just want your money and If they are > going to work usually it works within a few weeks not months. BTW, I have one of the cervical support tempurpedic pillows and several other types from soft to firm and I have to switch them around depending on what works best at the moment.
Guest guest
Personally from my experience I will never go back to a chiro although it may be different for other people. Does anyone recommend a pillow/cushion to use in the car as driving is agony for me and with 3 kids to chauffeur around I do a lot of it. I had looked at one at relax the back and it looked pretty good and was about $125. Dave, you had put in one of your messages to try and avoid surgery and fusion at any cost, that is where I am at the moment. In the last week and a half my lower back pain has incresed to a 7 ish each day and need to have an mri which I am putting off as can tell the same disk has had a meltdown from where the pain is, its now as bad ad before my 1st surgery. Can't help feeling sorry for myself as at 41 is this pain all I have to look forward to. I can't really take anything in the day as have to drive and look after the kids so be the end of the day am mean which I do not like or I could take the pills to help and be in lah lah land. From what I have heard and read on fusions its just a slippery slope to more pain and surgeries so I don't know.

I've been on increasing amount of pain medications constantly for the past 8 years now. I occasionally drive and feel in total control. Everyone has their own reactions and tolerances, but I never feel in La La Land with my pills, unless I take several types at the same time. But Just taking Vicoden alone doesn't phase me. But over 8 years I've built up a big tolerance. A true pain level of 7 is pretty bad. Surgery may be your only option but I would get all the opinions your insurance will allow, and see if they offer any non-invasive treatment. Perhaps even bedrest with traction to releive pressure on the disk. Dave
