Guest guest
RE: Dress Shoes Scrapped (how smart is it to wear things that hurt your feet) LOL Judy. . . and Sue two smart lady's I too have always prided myself on being unique and " my own trend setter! " 3 to 4 yrs ago; LIFE BEFORE CMT I dressed in suits(shoes and jewelry for every outfit) and high heels; nails and hair done and did interviews all day for AVON Products, Inc. as Assistant Manager for a 450 Representative district; Needless to say when diagnosed with CMT and told I " needed " AFO " S. . I said, " no way, no how, not ever; I've walked for 40 yrs without braces and I can't wear highheels with those ugly things! And my skirts are above my knees; No way it cramps my " style " My hubby had watched my progression for about 6 yrs and was beside himself trying to get me to slow down (as I was in denial better than 10 yrs that anything seriously could be wrong; just had occassional " burn out " )and begged me to please try the braces, and if I didn't like them then we wouldn't take them. I gave in and before I got to the end of the hall, I turned around with the biggest tears and cried, " I feel SO Graceful! " Needless to say they helped and made such a difference I didn't care about shoes at that point; Well, after I got back home from Mayo Rochester MN, reality set in and I remembered that in about three weeks, my husband was having his 30 yr class reunion! I began to fret and worry, how would I go wearing braces, and how would I cover them up;(I didn't want to make a " pity " impression for my husband's sake!) I wanted people to know me for me not for my handicap or disability! And he is joined at the hip to me for 27+ yrs now, and would not think of going without me! Well, I am a " bit Country " though being raised in Dallas TX and have a very southern accent; LOL <wink> ask anyone on the list that has talked to me over the phone;LOL . . I got a bright Idea; I'm from the Southwest. . . I have my own style. . . I can wear nice leather high top boots (for ankle support), broomstick skirts (to hide the ugly AFO's)and vests and got a goucho hat (black)to add Style and Flair! The Love of my life, very empathetic too how devastated I was about how I had to change my whole life style in a matter of days, took me on a shopping spree and bought me five new (southwest outfits; all interchanging) outfits, and one specially for the reunion. The style fits me and my personality and I'm proud of the way I dress and am very sensible as well as stylish! My molded inserts and AFO's work beautifully inside the deep shoe box of the Roper style boots; I have to get a size larger for all of it to fit but I can wear these with anything I have! And Judy, I've thought of the Positive of wearing ANY shoes I want again when in the chair permanently;( I do use a manual chair outside my home; a Jazzy power chair in my home as a " tool " to help me conserve energy!) I've got some of my favorites still put away for that very occasion! LOL So, life is full of change. . . but make them positive changes to FIT YOU! ~~~~~~~~~~~Sorry for the length of my tale but. . . I love to share happy endings! YA " LL COME BACK NOW HEAR ^-* ~ ===== " I THANK GOD FOR MY HANDICAPS, FOR, THROUGH THEM, I HAVE FOUND MYSELF, MY WORK, AND MY GOD. Guest guest
I went through this as a kid. My sister used to wear pretty sandels with summer dresses while I wore orthopaedic boots or shoes. Yuk I have the pictures but maybe try what Libby suggests and find your own style to accomodate what you have to wear. I've done it by opting for 'hippy' type clothing. I don't have a short skirt I wear trousers or long skirts and dresses and I love my jewellry. Dave paints my finger nails for me if I can't do it and on bad days even when I'm not going out I put on the war paint, dress up and feel tonnes better. I call it painting a smile on my face but I find it really does work. Living with CMT is a learning process just like everything else in life and you'll soon get the hang of it - I promise. Guest guest
shannon, i feel your pain completely! i sprained my ankle at my junior prom because i tried to wear shoes that had a one inch heel. this was before i was diagnosed. at my graduation in '99, we had to wear white and i had the ugliest white flat shoes, but at least i didn't fall. (it sucks having to go through life worrying about stupid little things like falling.) but anyway, i have three younger sisters and all of them are perfectly healthy and athletic. it does sadden me sometimes seeing them dressed up with their cute shoes. my 18 year old sister actually works in a shoe store and she has like 32 pairs of shoes. i've even started crying a couple times when shopping in her store. ok i'm rambling, but i just wanted to share my anxieties about shoes with you. you are not alone! -kelly--- shannon marzinski <butterflypower@...> wrote: > yeah it gets easier with time, Knowing that you > can't wear dress shoes. > You begin to be more accepting. > What makes things hard for me is I have a ten year > old sister whom I love > dearly when she is not being a brat and she wears > around the same size > shoe as me and gets to wear 'cool' and 'nice' and > 'dressy' shoes.... > IT SUCKS....THINGS WOULD BE EASIER IF I WASN'T > COMPARING MY SHOES TO > HERS.....ERRR.... > Just thought I'd share > > ________________________________________________________________ > GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! > Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for > less! > Join Juno today! Guest guest
I also know the feel of wanting to wear dress shoes.the only pair of shoes i can comfortably wear are sneakers these don't look very good with a dress that's for sure. now I just try to find and outfit that I can wear loafers with usually I end up in dress pants. the worst thing about this is when my husband and I got married I had to wear sneakers not pretty dress shoes with a heel. stacy ----- Original Message ----- From: athena why Sent: Friday, December 07, 2001 3:13 PM Subject: Re: [] Dress Shoes shannon, i feel your pain completely! i sprained my ankle at my junior prom because i tried to wear shoes that had a one inch heel. this was before i was diagnosed. at my graduation in '99, we had to wear white and i had the ugliest white flat shoes, but at least i didn't fall. Guest guest
Could be worse...you could have been like me and missed out on your homecomings AND your proms due to the old 'dress shoe issue'. I should have bit the bullet and went in wrestling shoes. :-) I could have started a new fad back then. All the guys would have been asking me if I wrestle...it's a great conversation starter. ;-) On Sunday, December 9, 2001, at 01:55 PM, shannon marzinski wrote: > Err....I WENT TO HOMECOMING AND DIDN'T WEAR MY AFO'S BECAUSE THEY ONLY > FIT WITH TENNIS SHOES....what a mess! Guest guest
Hi ! I can relate! Saturday I went to a really fancy christmas party for my work and everyone was supposed to dress formal. So I didn't want to wear my Nike tennis shoes(the only shoes I can wear and not fall) so I decided to wear dress shoes. Big mistake! I fell in front of everyone and my knee was bleeding badly. It was so embarrassing! I was so mad at myself for not wearing my tennis shoes. I would have enjoyed myself so much more if I had not tried so hard to be 'normal'.
