THANK YOU! GRETCHEN!

Sometime around 1947-1950 I received a small portable

record player for Christmas. It only played the 45rmp

records, and the one placed inside my record player

was a shinny transparent red record. On the top of

the record player was a small book with a picture of a

deer with a big red nose. I was estatic! I put the

record on my player and turned it on and it played a

song I had just about drove everyone crazy with that I

had heard on the radio being sung by one of my

favorite cowboy singers, Gene Autrey. " Rudolph The

Red Nosed Reindeer " !

You see my Mama and Daddy were both " crippled " ,

although I didn't know it at that time. They were

just Mama and Daddy! I didn't understand that all the

attention I received from other grown ups, especially

my Aunt and Grandmothers was out of pity. I didn't

know I was begin pitied, I didn't know that there was

a reason to be pitied.

My parents, especially my Mama, didn't indulge in

pity, it was a waste of time! They had better things

to do. As in rearing children, making a nice home,

teaching us to read and write before we started to

school. And most importantly about Who and What

Christmas was really about.

My birthday comes 11 days before Christmas. We never

put up decorations until after my birthday. When

asked why we didn't decorated right after Thanksgiving

like the other families.I was told. " You must have

your birthday first and then we celebrate Jesus'

birthday, which is very very special " . Then it was

always explained why it was so special, the reason why

each of us got at least one present or more. Why we

had stockings filled with fruit and nuts. Why we

brought a tree inside the house and put lights on it.

Jesus' birthday is so special because he was born to

give the world the most important gift. His life. He

died so we may all live in peace and happiness in a

more beautiful place than we are in now.

We give each other gifts to commerate the gifts the

Magi brought to the Baby Jesus. Gold, incense and

Myhr. The gold helped ph and the Blessed

escape from Herod to Egypt. incense and Myhr was

both very expensive oils and herbs of healing. If it

could be afforded it was used to preform the

circumcision that all Jewish boys go through and also

it could be sold to help the Holy family through out

their trails.

We put a tree in our homes each year to prove that

there are still things green and living even during

the coldest part of the year. And the lights are the

Light of Life from Heaven to guide us through out the

year.

We gather as a family to celebrate Christmas and to

show our love for each other and share the true

meaning of Christmas. That to me is the meaning of

Christmas.

Gosh, I didn't mean to get so long winded. I was so

happy to see the story behind Rudolph again. Gretchen

that is a very special gift you gave us, Thank you!

I wished sometimes I had Sue's talent of putting

feelings in type. But God gave me a different gift and

I a should be very thankful for that. Not one but two

parents that were " disabled " . Daddy, CMT; Mama,

Polio. They tried to teach us that we could do what we

wanted and to use our talents to the best of our

abilities. Mama? Daddy? I have tried.

" God Bless Us All in this very tragic year of our

lives. Let us not forget others who are suffering from

losses that we can or may not comprehend and may be

harder to bear than the ones we are bearing now. Amen "

MERRY CHRISTMAS YA'LL

Susie
