Guest guest
HI Tee tee, I have a nine year old son who has a CI. He recived his implant in 1996. In all that time never had a problem with static electric. He wears his implant on slides and all. I do try to rember to put softner in the wash, we have very little carpet in our house. Any way good luck with your daughter. regurds Carol mother of Kristian 9 CI N22 1996 and Austin 5 hearing Need Info Please > Just wondering about a couple of things. Guest guest
Hi Tee Tee, Here is what the 3G user manual has to say about Electroststic Discharge (p96), <<A discharge of static electricity can damage the electrical components of the cochlear implant system or corrupt the program in the speech processor. If the static electricity is present (e.g. when putting on or removing clothes over the head or getting out of a vehicle), cochlear implant recipients should touch something conductive (e.g. a metal door handle) before the cochlear implant system contacts any object or person. Prior to engaging in activities that create extreme electrostatic discharge, such as playing on plastic slides, the speech processor and headset should be removed. Clinicians should use an anti-static shield on the computer monitor when programming a cochlear implant recipient.>> Note that the plastic slide is an extreme cause of static discharge. For the most part, the newer design of the internal array with its grounding wire prevents us from having to worry about static in our typical daily lives. As for the durabilility of the implant, here is my experience: I have had a BWP since October of 2000 but have used the 3G exclusively for the past 9 months or so. I have had maybe 2 wires go bad on me and also have exchanged my BWP microphone twice due to perspiration. My 3G has not had any problems except that Cochlear had a batch of 3Gs come out that were a bit too sensitivie to moisture. I needed to exchange my 3G for a new one 4 times. This was way at the beginning of the 3G's introduction and I have not had any problems with my current 3G since I received it. Cochlear was terrific when it came to customer service to rectify this problem and make me happy. I take very good care of my external components because this is not a hearing aid. I will be purchasing a Dry and Store (before it gets too hot here in NYC) because spending the few extra bucks is well worth it to keep me hearing!! Tee Tee asks, <<Just wondering about a couple of things. First, are there many problems with a CI and static, if so what types of problems. When something goes wrong with the external components that require repair or replacement, do you have to pay for it or is it under some kind of warrantee? And also, it is my impression from reading between the lines here that sweat or moisture damages the BTE part to the extent that it has to be repaired or replaced any time moisture gets into it? You just can't put it into a silica gell pack and let it dry out? Sounds like I'm gonna be using a lot of finger cots in the future.... I'm sure I'm going to get all this information in the preliminary phases of getting the implant. I'm likely going to be something of a pain to the implant team cuz I'm gonna be asking a lot of technical questions or am going to ask for the actual technical aspects of the electronics of all the avialable equipment before I decide on a course of action. I can't help it, I know just enough about solid state digital electonics to be dangerous. :-) Pete
Guest guest
Pete, You have a three year warantee for anything that goes wrong with your external components. Not all the 3G's are as sensitive to moisture as mine were at the beginning. It was just a weak batch that came out at the beginning but Cochlear has fixed the problem. I put the CI in a Rubbermaid container with the silica tin every night. There is a mic port that sits on the side of my head and I like to cover that with a tiny piece of self sticking moleskin to try to keep some sweat out. I also like the way it sounds better than when it is open. No need to read between any of my lines Pete! LOL Nuked 9/28/00 Hooked 10/26/00 I SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! Guest guest
i just got told-hep c tests show RNA @4.0 viral load results for hcv rna is 11,000 iu/ml can anyone tell me how bad this is?
Guest guest
Those RNA tests always baffle me...how they can count tails of a " virus " that are too small to even see with our most advanced microscopes?...and considering our own cells contain RNA how do we know they are even foreign.??? At any rate, that viral load is very low..there are folks here with loads in the many millions that are doing very well. It will fluctuate so much that it really isnt even a number you need to keep track of unless you are on treatment.
Guest guest
Jen I know here in Wisconsin there is a waiver program for kids with Autism. But there is also a waiting list. The county I am in is a 6 - 9 month waiting list. I think it's only good for intensive therapy up to the age of 7 I think. I can't remember exactly. I could find out more details if you want me to. My son has been in the intensive therapy for almost 3 years. Soon he will go to post intensive and have that for as long as he needs it stacie -- Need Info Please Hi, My husband is getting out of the military March 1, and wants to move our family to Waco, Texas area - as he will be going into the merchant marines - and will be out to sea 6-9 months per year. Theoretically making it possible for me to stay at home with the kids (for many reasons I am not convinced of this - the least being that I am 100% a city girl). My question is this - despite a lot of research I do not see that Texas has any equivalent to regional center, nor do they appear to have any support in place for families of children with autism. I would be thrilled to hear from any of you, with what states that provide the best services for AS kids. I know that California probably is the #1 place, but this worries me as it has taken me until now just to get Hope's regional center approved.
