Guest guest
.... which reminds me... (not that it has anything to do with anything... but then, maybe it does, I don't know)...

When my girlfriend was originally diagnosed HCV+ a while back, the liver specialist kept asking her (and I DO mean *repeatedly*) " When's the last time you drank alcohol? " ... " Are you *sure* you're not a little bit of a heavy drinker? " ... etc..... I think that HE was *certain* that SHE was an alcoholic or something (and that THAT had caused the swelling of the liver); meanwhile SHE and I were sitting there, basically dumbfounded, just TRYING to remember how long it had actually been since she'd had ANY significant amount of alcohol at all. It was soooo weird!!! Here was the doctor, *assuming* that she must've been an alcoholic (but just in complete denial)... meanwhile, we couldn't even remember off the top of our heads the last time that either of us had had any alcohol. (Obviously, neither of us are big drinkers.) And we're sitting there going " Well, we each had a couple glasses of champagne on New Year's... " (and here it was mid-April when we were trying to pinpoint it). The whole thing was kind of surreal.

Would THAT be a case of " non-alcohol-related cirrosis of the liver " (because she was ALSO then diagnosed shortly thereafter with HCV)??

Just curious... Thanks again, in advance...

:-)

-Seb.

Guest guest
Your girlfriends doctor is typical of the ineptitude of these doctors. Instead of looking for the REAL reason she had an inflammed liver, he looked to blame it on alcohol. I hope you have since educated him, or she has changed doctors!!

LeighAnn

Guest guest
Wonderful about the transplant. I will add you and your friend to my prayers.Congratulation.
As for the Dr... Unless you have to stay with him. I would say " Look for someone else " You pay the bills and he works for you.. Unless you tell him that you are both heavy drinkers, he needs to respect you. That is just my optinon. I ran into alot of arogance in Iowa with Drs, I now am in Alaska and there has been alot more informed Professionals.
Good luck!

Guest guest
I agree with you Leighann,
Don't continue with a Dr. with this attitude. You hired him. He works for you. You're going to have to depend on him, his good advice & hopefully, his good bedside manner. Don't put up with smugness. I *fired* a Dr. & a pharmacist over the very same thing. Good luck.
Reg

Guest guest
LeighAnn,

Oh, no... Not what I meant at all. Sorry.

(I do understand what you mean... but...) I felt bad when I read that what I'd typed had been taken in (such) a different way that I'd intended it... I'll admit I have never been a fan of doctors in general (due to my own experiences as a kid), but if anything, this liver specialist that my girlfriend has REALLY IS one of the best doctors I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. I am 100% sorry if I painted him in a negative (or insensitive) way; he really does know his stuff... he's been incredibly supportive (which helped my friend get through a year's worth of tough combo therapy)... his nursing staff is absolutely wonderful, too... and he's even assisting us in trying to get my girlfriend into some HCV drug study at a university (later this year). He has never been unprofessional or anything... the only reason he asked that (I think), is that my girlfriend's liver was FINE, and then *suddenly* it was just completely TRASHED. I think we was just having a hard time believing that it could've gotten so torn up so badly so quickly. There was no disrespect intended (or taken by either of us), and like I said, he's always been completely professional. I sure didn't mean for that stuff I wrote to be taken that way, because I do respect the guy, and I'm relieved that my friend has such good people looking out for her.

:-)

-Seb.
