I am a mom and lp. I would have never guessed how much the m word hurts my

son. He takes a lot of things people say about me and any lp very

personally. For the sake of those who are uncomfortable on our behalf, yes,

make the

call.

If you google " keith the midget " you'll see it's the punch line to a

joke that's been making the rounds.

It's the fifth post here:

I am not sure what to do about everyone who uses the wrong language with

everything - I do know that we cannot fix them all and most things we are going

to have to ignore. There is a place here in town that is called Midget Auto

Sales - we cannot correct everyone and most people will do it or say it anyway

and especially when they find out it is offensive. Just leave it be - the pain

isn't worth the battle.

Hi Martha and all,

I agree with you totally that we cannot change

everything said or everyone's mind. However your post

seemed to take a defeatist attitude and by those

standards then yes, nothing will change.

I've found that when I've spoken to random people they

had NO idea midget was offensive and apologized. That

right there was worth it, not the apology but that

they learned.

At conference last year we had an ambulance circle the

block over 3 times taking pics of us. A month after

it still bothered me so I talked to the owner, he was

very apologetic and had me come in and talk to the

driver! I got to educate him about his actions and he

" got it " . It was such a REWARDING thing!

You stated it is not worth the pain, all of the above

was absolutely painless. I refuse to sit back and not

lift a finger, and I also refuse to be the helpless

victim going through life with what I was handed, that

reminds me of Eeyore. I do not know you to make that

statement about you personally, however I have known a

lot of lps to take that attitude.

Martha, if we don't stand up for ourselves, no one

will do it for us. Spending a few minutes to type a

letter is painless, but the impact the letter will

make even if nothing is acted upon is definitely worth

the price of a stamp!

I say to the person that felt they wanted to do

something to the radio station, go for it! We all may

not agree however if it bothers YOU then go for it! I

intend to try to make this world a little bit better

for the next generation of dwarfs.

:)

Hi All:

My name is Sharon and I am an AH parent of an achon daughter (Kelsey, age 10).

I lurk more than write on this list.  About 3 years ago, the number one rated

radio station that I listen to here in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia aired

a " joke " about a " midget " that was VERY distasteful.  It wasn't just the use of

the word, but the context they used it in.  I usually let most  of these

things go, but this one really upset me.  I immediately e-mailed the morning

show people " educating them " a bit.  I also sent them a photo of my beautiful

daughter (one of the DJs had a daughter the same age) asking if they would like

for their child to be the receiving end of that type of garbage.  It took

several back and forth volleys between myself and the manager of the station,

but the message finally got through.  Several weeks later, there was again talk

of " midgets " on the air and they then said they had recently learned that it was

" politically incorrect to use that term, etc. "   Since that time, I don't think

I have ever heard them use the term " midget " again.  They also interviewed one

the the LPA national officers on the air live a a few months back.  Just

thought I would let you know that sometimes speaking up does work.

I am Holland, mother of Martha Holland Stanley, age 36. A few years

ago, US Senator made comments on Bill Maher Real Time HBO show.

spoke of midgets in some context, can't remember what. We live near

Richmond VA. I quickly connected state and federal offices, and did

apologize in a kind of backhanded way. It is just a shame that so many people

just don't get the impact or education to know that the M word is as bad as

the

N word. When Martha did the HBO documentary, Dwarfs Not a Fairy Tale, she

showed that she emphasized to her students the importance of using the

correct verbiage when talking about all of mankind. She has made such an

impression on her students in how to refer to all people.

I would just like to add...

Yes, even educated MD's or otherwise will assume because it is just that an

assumption that " Proportionate " LP's are referred to as Midgets. I can believe

in this day and age, there are some that still count on this way of thinking.

We just need to educate (yes even the physicians) that don't know better

because they have simply not come across another LP or have much experience.

Like someone else said " it's called a Practice " they are, sadly to say, just

Practicing Medicine.

I am glad you brought this up because even people I work with have asked me

the very same thing. I am quick to correct them and say the " M " word is just as

unacceptable as calling a person of another race that " Slang " word. They get the

drift real quick. Whats nice, is they will go and tell someone and they tell

someone and so on and so on! I think Little People Big World is a BIG help for

more so the AP's then the LP's because lets face it we KNOW what it's like to go

through ever day life doing what we do just in another way " ha ha

Love you guys Hope you're having a GROOVY weekend!

PEACE! Eileen

  • 3 years later...

People, do you figure there's enough umph in a 6volt lantern battery to reach

from upper thigh to the ankle on a full grown man? (6'2 " , 230lbs) Or should I

do from hip to knee and then knee to ankle?

Thanks for your time. Jim
