Guest guest
Diabetes cuts off circulation. It deprives the nerves and tissues of blood, resulting in reduced feeling and reduced health of tissues, including lowered resistance to infection. The feet in particular get infected and don't heal. People don't realize it until it's too late. Toes often have to be amputated, etc. The medical advice we have all heard is: lose weight, exercise, wash the feet daily with warm soapy water. Inspect feet closely once a week look for infections. I have dug up some more info as well, and this is just my take on it. 1. Godzilla: local infections seem to respond very well to it, per our files. So, in addition to regular medical attention, it could be useful to fight off infections. We are researching that, and you can too. Do not give up medical treatments, however. 2. Peroxide: is bleach, is corrosive and destroys skin cells and allows infections in through the skin. Your skin is your first defense against infection. 3. Don't use anti-bacterial soap or alcohol. Use plain soap and warm water to wash. 4. Exercise promotes circulation and introduces oxygen 5. But oxygen is not the main or only benefit that is important to diabetics. For diabetics, exercise also makes the muscle cells less resistant to insulin. By using insulin more readily, the body requires lower levels of insulin. With lower levels of insulin, the pancreas is under less stress to produce huge quantities of it. Insulin is what makes it possible to burn calories. If the cells take up insulin they can burn calories. But the cells do not absorb insulin readily, then calories are not ready to burn and the body will NOT supply oxygen. It makes no sense to supply oxygen to cells that cannot use it. Exercise will make the cells more ready to burn calories, by increasing efficiency of the insulin you DO have. When that occurs, the cells have a new ability to burn calories, and the body begins to supply oxygen for that to happen. 6. The reason exercise is resisted by folks with diabetes may be the fact that insulin resistance has built up. Exercise provides oxygen, but the body is not ready to use oxygen since the cells are not ready to burn calories due to insulin resistance. So a person may not feel driven to exercise. It is a vicious cycle usually requiring outside intervention. 7. The psychology of weight gain and may have contributed to diverting attention away from the insulin resistance problem, which is simple chemistry, and has nothing to do with willpower or personal failing. It's always good to have your head together, of course, but it won't help much to solve a chemistry issue that simply requires forced exercise to correct. Fear of forcing oneself to do anything due to psychological damage is overblown (in this case). The level of exercise is low enough that most people can do it. Expecting to get a lift as a result of being virtous and exercising is also misplaced. This is just a chemical imbalance. When corrected it will do nothing to make anyone feel better or worse in their head (though it may relieve some fear of future health problems). There isn't much more to say from my viewpoint here. A clever use of godzilla can possibly avert an infection and/or amputation, good exercise program ok'd by your doctor couldn't hurt, keep clean the old-fashioned way. bG 6.
