Beard was a pioneer physician in the study of neuroses. He

mental illness.

Beard was born in Montville, Connecticut. He studied at Yale, and began a

the field of the medical use of electricity.

Electricity therapy had been popular in the 18th century ...Ben lin

even tried this medical treatment.

Electric treatment became standard treatment for functional nervous

disorders in the mid 1800s, and survived as a theraputic treatment until the

early 1900s.

Beard also coined the phrase " neurasthenia " for nervous exhaustion. This

nervous disorder soon became known as " American Nervousness " .

The co-author, A. D. Rockwell, was a charter member of the American

Neurological Association, and presented a paper on " electrization "

treatments at the association's first meeting in 1875.
