Dangerous Quest

In response to Maya Bell's July 22 article, " Quest for beauty kills,

disfigures " : Ten years ago, at the age of 36, I had medical-grade silicone

injections to give me fuller lips.

I had no idea at the time that this was an unlicensed product in the

United Kingdom. It took me another five years to find this out.

Within months of the injections I started to suffer chronic fatigue,

rashes, general aches and pains all over my body, ringing in the ears,

muscle twitches, night sweats, the list was endless.

Today, I am on full disability benefit. I have been diagnosed by

neurologists as having multiple sclerosis, rheumatologists with

connective-tissue disease, dermatologists with unknown skin disease,

orthopedics with bone degeneration, especially in the neck, and dentists

with TMJ.

I also suffer from local problems and am in constant pain.

I was shocked to learn that these are the very symptoms and illnesses

associated with silicone injections.

I am well aware that many people who have MS or connective-tissue disease

have never been near a silicone injection, but I have never heard of

anyone having all these illnesses together unless they have.

Six years ago I started a support group for women who suffered as a result

of silicone. To date, I have had more than 4,000 women contact my group.

I now have many friends who were all injected with silicone, and most of

them suffer from the same diseases I have.

Thank you for exposing the dangers of these illicit injections. I believe

that you may well have saved many lives.
