Guest guest
Gretchen, Thanks for sending the ribbons. What type of surgery did you have when you were ten? An elongation of the tendon or severing? I definitely will get a second opinion. . In regards to the shoes, we buy Stride Rite - the only shoes I have found to be wide enough for his toes and deep enough for his orthotics. I will look into New Balance though. Thanks for the advice. I myself had tendon surgery when I was 10 that has lasted (Am now 49). While I am not completely aware of shoes for children, I am wondering if New Balance makes children's shoes? Perhaps wider shoes until his bones are grown might help? There are a number of other parents in this group that I am sure will step in here to help. Also, I would like to suggest a second opinion, by a pediatric orthopedist who could offer you more suggestions. I can understand being freaked out by surgery, I sure was! That is why I suggest additional medical opinions and in the meantime perhaps consider some wider shoes. ~ Gretchen
Guest guest
Hello , Wore Stride Rites myself as a child! About my tendon surgery, good question, back in those days it was called " tendon transplants " , about ten years ago I heard something similiar called " tendon transfers " - I have no idea of the definition. Anyway, judging from the way my mother said I walked, I THINK in this surgery the tendons were somehow tightened, maybe even severed. I am afraid my parents are no longer living and my medical records from that time are gone...not much help huh? I am certain you can find out more about this from the Drs. in your area. Know there are excellent ones there. ~ G >

Guest guest
Janet, No, my tendon surgery was not 's tendon. It was tendon transplants on both feet, midway between my big toe and heel almost above my arches. It involved a week in the hospital, 6 weeks in hard casts, being off my feet, and physical therapy/walking in sand to strengthen new tendon re-alingments after. That's about all I can tell you. Somewhere recently I read about tendon surgery and it described my experience so now I will just have to find it for you. ~ Gretchen
Guest guest
My lord GG, where do you find all this info? i am impressed. thanks for the insight. my pereneal tendon (hope i spelled that right) blew out completely in 93 while i was doing a lot of squatting (i'm a carpenter). i went around for 3 years thinking, as a doctor had told me) that it was bone splinters. well, i have not seen my achilles (wrong again) tendon since. finally had it fix. the doc put the tendon back together and cut my heel off - relocating it more under my foot and lowered my arch. my toes have not touched the floor since the lowering part. in 2002 i had to have the tendon done again after a girl ran a red light. this time the same doc did some kind of tendon transfer. my foot has not regained the strength i had the day before the surgery. so were you your own donor for your tendons? where did you have the surgery? thanks again, dave
Guest guest
Hi , Guess I should explain; when I had the tendon surgery on my feet, it was called " tendon transplants " (circa 1962). But nothing was " transplanted " in terms of that word as we know it today, meaning nothing from someone else or a donor or mechanical, etc. My tendons were snipped and pulled across the inside of the top of my foot. I think this surgery is also since referred to as " tendon transfers " . I had the surgery done in West Los Angeles where I grew up and was living at the time, at a local hospital. It was done my Marshall Urist, M.D. (orthopedist in private practice and also on staff at UCLA - go Bruins!) Having the leg casts on after for 6 weeks was awful, and so were my first steps walking when the casts came off - I was off my feet mostly during that 6 weeks except for walking casts. This sort of ended my childhood innocence, and being in the hospital for a week was scary, but it just brought out the character building in me. I often wondered for years after if it really helped. But, now, some 40 years since, I no longer wonder, I KNOW that surgery helped. And I will tell you something, I absolutely hated the physical therapy and walking on the beach after. But now I see the merit in this and still walk in the sand when I can. ~ Gretchen
