This is just a general email to everyone out there about

some feelings I have about depression and the various

treatments available.

Time and time again, we receive emails from women who

state they are depressed, can't stop crying, can't get

out of bed, or a host of other symptoms commonly

associated with clinical depression. These women have

every right to feel this way, as we all do, especially

after what we've been through. And there is treatment

and hope out there for women who are depressed.

Depression is no longer a disease one needs to be

ashamed about. Yes, it still has some stigma associated

with it, but nowhere near what it used to have. And

with the advent of the Parity Law in the late 90's,

depression is now treated like any other chronic illness.

I agree that psychotherapy isn't for everyone, but I

have found it to be an immense source of support and

help for me. I have been in therapy with a psychiatrist

for 7 yrs. She has been one of the few persons who has

supported me through my illnesses and the theories about

my implants. She was treating me when I had the

implants placed, and she was treating me when I had them

removed. Without her, I don't know where I'd be

emotionally. She never once told me that my illnesses

were " in my head. " She believed in me when very few

people did. She encouraged my research into breast

implants, and encouraged me to inform myself about the

issues. And she did all of this even when she had a

legal nurse consultant friend who swore to her that

implants were not related to autoimmune diseases. Her

friend told her that there was not any evidence

connecting the 2 and that women who linked the 2

together were " reaching for something they were never

going to find. " This legal nurse consultant testified

at trials in Denver and elsewhere, and to this day,

still holds firm in her belief about breast implants.

And yet, even though this woman was a friend of my docs,

my doctor never once questioned my theories.

My psychiatrist has helped me through many tough times,

including the severe depression and fear I developed

when I found these sites. I was literally frozen in

fear one day in her office and crying so hard that I

didn't think I'd ever stop. I kept blaming myself for

what I'd done to my body. I felt that my stupidity

would make me pay forever for the impulsive decision I

made almost 5 yrs ago. But her kind words, and

understanding nature eventually enabled me to realize

that I needed to accept the decision I made, but that

now I had the chance to make things right and to make

peace with myself.

Three wks ago, I said goodbye to her as I made the

decision to move to SC. It was by far the hardest

goodbye I've ever had to do. Not only was she my

psychiatrist for 7 yrs, but she was my friend and my

mentor. She allowed me to become the person I am today--

more confident, more outgoing, more aware. She gave me

the tools I (and everyone) needs to succeed in life as

well as how to deal with life.

I understand that there are many undesirable docs out

there in every specialty. But if you are someone who is

emotionally hurting and doesn't have a good support

system, then maybe you should consider seeing a doctor.

And to receive psychotherapy, you don't need to see a

psychiatrist. You can see a psychologist, therapist,

social worker, or other counselors. I just happened

to " fall " into my doc's hands. I went through 2 docs

before the last one referred me to the clinic she ran.

And when I called to make an appt, she just happened to

have an opening.

The benefits of psychotherapy are numerous.

Psychotherapy allows you to grow as a person and

confront the challenges that life throws at us. And

sometimes it's just good to see someone you know and

trust, but who is neutral. For instance, I didn't

utilize my doc just for depression, but for relationship

problems, advice, work problems, friend problems, family

problems, and childhood problems and trauma. I knew

that if I had a situation where I coudn't make a

decision, I could always count on Dr. G to advise me and

help me make the best decision. She never judged me,

but instead always supported me, even if she didn't

agree.

So, my point is that psychotherapy may not be for

everyone, but it can help you if you give it a chance

and find the right doctor. And just because you enter

into psychotherapy doesn't mean that you need to take

meds. Psychotherapy is simply " talk therapy. " Nothing

more; nothing less. And I have found not only with

myself, but with pts I've cared for, that psychotherapy

gives people the independence and confidence they need

and are lacking.

Finding a good doc can be difficult. If you are someone

who is contemplating getting into psychotherapy, you

definately need to find a reputable doc. Do not pull a

name out of the phone book, or call a physician referral

line at your local hospital. Ask friends or people you

work with if they know of anyone. Or call the Dept of

Psychiatry at a university affiliated hospital and ask

the dept chair if he/she can recommend anyone in the

community.

I spoke to my psychiatrist a wk ago, as she

is " bridging " my care until I find a new doc. She is

someone that I have the utmost respect and confidence in

and will forever treasure our doctor/patient

relationship.

Hi all......need some help...On LDN for a week and 2 days. Was on 1.5 for a week now on 2.0. When I was on the 1.5, I experienced some depression. Now on my second pill of 2.0 I feel like someone has a clamp on my head. I also, take Imuran and Rebif along with this.

I started a diet just prior to taking my first LDN. Did not experience any depression. Do not know what to think? Do not want to stop taking LDN experiencing so many changes got my balance back, my weak arm feels like mine again and walking without any spasms.

Please help need to talk with GP and I want to give him some suggestions. I do know being on the Imuran and Rebif is probably not helping.

Hi, I stopped the Rebif before starting LDN. I felt immediately much better. I then realized that it was the Rebif that was making me worse than I actually was. Started LDN 5days later. I had 2 attacks in 1 year on Rebif, more intense than I ever had before and also left more damage. Don't know about Imuran, have never taken.( Rebif does cause depression,read the side effects.)

If the lower dose works for you stay on it. Dr.B told me that 20% of MSers need to be tweeked to the right amount. More is not always better (ldn motto) Kiki

THE INTERFERONS ARE KNOW TO CAUSE DEPRESSION, AND AVONEX DID FOR ME.

i GOT OFF AVONEX AND NO MORE DEPRESSION.....

Hi ,

Depression comes about for many reasons. Diet is usually the main reason

but there are other triggers in life as well. However, a cleansed body

and proper diet does help one to deal with depression and life's ups and

downs much easier. My guess is she has a not very good diet and/or

lifestyle. Best bet for depression is cleansing using either a juice

cleanse, fasting or doing a total body cleansing and major dietary

overhaul.

Girls- I strongly believe that having RA causes a chemical imbalance leading to depression. I have been on Oxazepam for Fibro but it works really well in conjunction with a bit of trazadone for depression. I got so bad I was suicidal and spent a week in the " ward " scary scary scary, until they could even out my imbalance. Ive been doing very well every since. It takes time to find something that works or a combination of things that work. You might try something like passionflower or valerian root in addition. It is natural and does help. For that matter, get yourself an herbal hops tea blend and youll forget what you were depressed about! I guarantee IT...BIG HUGS>>>>>>Deborah
