Guest guest
Lia, I have had swollen legs ever since my transplant especially my left leg. The only thing I can do is elevate my legs and not walk too much. In my case my legs are very painful to even touch. At one time I ended up with stretch marks on my ankles. Hopefully your water pills will start working. But keep your legs propped up. Someone on this site mentioned weeping legs where fluid seeped out I am so happy I haven't had that problem. gayle trans/6-99 ^oo^ galye@... Guest guest
Lia, regarding swollen ankles -- this isn't much of an answer, but limiting salt and drinking a lot of water may help. Keeping your ankles raised when possible is good; when you lie in bed, try putting your feet up on the wall. Staying off your feet may help keep your ankles from swelling, but it deprives you of the exercise you need. Your ankles will probably look much more normal when you decrease Prednisone. If one ankle or leg becomes much more swollen than the other, check with a doctor immediately, as asymmetrical swelling could indicate a blood clot. Important: When you take diuretics, be sure you get plenty of potassium. Lack of potassium can cause really serious problems. I don't know if support stockings, put on before you get out of bed, would be appropriate or not. Pregnant women with swollen legs are often told to use support stockings. Because of a minor fracture, I've had one leg in a cast or a boot for more than a month, with at least a couple of weeks to go. And, my ankles aren't swollen anymore! I have skinny ankles again! At least the one I can see is skinny. That's because I'm walking as little as possible until the cast comes off. However, the leg-in-a-cast cure for swollen ankles is a lot worse than the problem! Guest guest
Lia & Galye: I started getting swollen legs (calves) and feet ever since my relapse in April. When they were bad, I couldn't even walk because it was painful. My feet got so bad you could hear the swishing sound of the water when I tried to walk - this was when I was on 40mg of prednisone. Lasix works (I'm on 80mg), but it seems to come back in a few days. Both my family doctor and my hept. said is was due to both my liver and taking prednisone. The hept. wants me down to 5mg prednisone, and 50 mg Imuran, I'm currently at 10mg prednisone and 100mg of Imuran, and the swelling continues. If you are taking lasix, or a generic of lasix, you my want to check with your doctor about taking potassium (if you are not already), since both lasix and prednisone lowers your potassium levels, which could be dangerious. -Clyde =========================================================+ Help save a life, become an organ and tissue donor today.| =========================================================+
Guest guest
I had swollen ankles after I had my TIPS shunt placed. I was given Spornolactone/Aldectone originally for acne and stopped because it did nothing for me. When I unexpectedly started swelling and my shoes wouldn't fit I was told to start taking it again and the swelling went away immediately. It usually prescribed for those with Ascites. Guest guest
The past couple of days my legs have hurt, just a constant dull ache. Nothing to bad til yesterday and they hurt a bit more, then last night around 9 p.m. when I would get up after sitting more then a few minutes, my right leg wouldn't straighten out fully making walking difficult and painful, figured it was a spasm, had them before. But noticed my legs are swollen, and the right one is hugh. And it hurts more then the left one. Now a question, is it possible that my braces need adjusting again? They look ok, but my r-knee looks like it is shifting more towards the left one, as my knee's go like this > < and meet one another, the r-knee is more <<<<< make any sense? I can't see how that could happen if my braces are holding them straight. My r-brace does fit looser then it used to, they don't stretch, so maybe more atrophy on the r-leg and I didn't notice it. Oh well some feedback would be nice, I'm sitting here and it's after 5 a.m. cuz, my legs hurt! Dang it! ~>Becky M.
Guest guest
OH YEAH!!!! I might post a pic so you guys can see just how bad it gets. It's really awful looking. I know I shouldn't be so vain, but good grief...my legs can balloon up to twice their size. I, too, was hoping the thyroid meds would alleviate this problem... All I can say is I have good days and bad days when it comes to the swelling. I hope YOU will find the problem will eventually go away. Guest guest
Okay...I will attach two pics of me. The first one was taken in Aug. 2003. This is the one where my legs are REALLY swollen. The second pic was taken in Sept. 2003, and this is where I'm having a good day as far as the swelling in my legs is concerned. I know it's not just the angle of the pictures or whatever. My husband sees my legs all the time and he knows how some days they're normal and some days they're really bad. I'm curious if your legs get this swollen...anyone else have swelling like this? hugs, sheila Lyn <silverback212000@...> wrote: Has anyone else had painful swollen legs? mine are driving me mad I had hoped that when I started the thyroxine it would ease but not yet- any ideas people please?????????? all the best lyn

Guest guest
Mine are pretty bad. If your legs are really swollen and hard, (the skin doesn't dent and stay dented--that's pitting edema), then it's hard edema. It is associated with Hashimoto's. The only things I have found to work are acupuncture (lasts a few days at $60/treatment) and buying diuretics from Mexico. Guest guest
thats exactly how my mom describes it.. cellulitis (which im not saying it is) is a leg infection of the blood. Guest guest
, i have non-pitting edema where the skin does not dent. I was told that's a result of the Hashi's/hypo. Okay, I understand this disease ages us...slows everything down. What's up with the edema??? Why does this happen with thyroid disease? I know our thyroid affects every cell in our body, but I'm just curious why we get the edema in the first place. any idea? have a great night! sheila <melmac2525@...> wrote: Mine are pretty bad. Guest guest
I have NOOO idea why it happens. It took me a long time (with the help of a medical student) to search out that it even happens. Guest guest
thanks, ...mine is worse in the summer. thing is though...when we vacation by the sea, my legs are much better. Sea water is supposed to be healing from what I've read, but I don't know if there's any science behind it. Guest guest
I live just a couple of miles from the beach, so I don't think seawater has anything to do with my problems. I have always had huge water retention problems in the heat, and I notice my legs are worse in the summer (nice, eh, just when you want to wear shorts and etc.). I have had problems with water retention and body size changes due to bloating (I'm talking about clothes you put on in the morning just plain not fitting anymore after a couple of hours in the heat). If I'm hiking, my hands swell up like mad...I have to remember to take off any rings, etc. if I am going to be walking in the summer. Guest guest
Hi , Yeah...it's not possible for me to wear my wedding rings either in the summer because my hands also swell really badly. Like you, when we go hiking the swelling is horrible (as you can see from that one photo). My face and arms get bigger too. I haven't been as bad as you though 'cause I don't swell so bad that my clothes get too tight (except for one pair of capris jean shorts). I just don't understand why the swelling is so much less when I'm by the sea. I'll have to do some digging and see if I can discover why. Yep, this disease is a weird one. We lose hair, but not in the place where we'd like to (legs, armpits). We retain water and get puffed up, but do you think my breasts would swell??? Of course NOT!! Sure would be a perk if they did...LOL! take care & have a good night, sheila <melmac2525@...> wrote: I live just a couple of miles from the beach, so I don't think seawater has anything to do with my problems. Guest guest
This happens to me too, just around the ankles. The skin is tight and shiny and very flaky. It has lately become reddened. My derm gave me some cream for it and the dryness went away but, the swelling comes and goes. I wonder if it is more related to my liver probs than my thyroid probs? I have always had thicker ankles but, the skin wasnt shiny until a couple of years ago... My doctor has checked me over pretty good several times and she made mention of it...is it not that serious? Guest guest
cellulitis occurs when the third skin layer is infected for some reason, like a scratch or a bug bite etc... In children for example, they often getting from picking scabs with their dirty fingernails introducing bacteria into an open wound. It is treated with well with antibiotics. Guest guest
staph infections can be VERY serious. hopefully it's not a staph infection but rather just something similar. sheila Girlie <kckim@...> wrote:its not treated well with antibiotics.. my moms legs are still swollenand they dont care they are just like whatever you have cellulitis forever get over it and its soo painful its like a staph infection of the blood or soemthing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Interstitial-Cystitis www.misskimberly.com Re: swollen legs > cellulitis occurs when the third skin layer is infected for some reason, > like a scratch or a bug bite etc... > In children for example, they often getting from picking scabs with > their dirty fingernails introducing bacteria into an open wound. > It is treated with well with antibiotics. > People with reduced immune function are more prone to skin > infectionsl like this, but it can happen to anyone. > > >
Guest guest
Hmm...i'm not sure if it could be related to your liver. My docs just make mention of it too...i guess they just all think it has to do with my thyroid...i'm assuming they don't think it's serious for me. hope you have a great weekend!!! when do you travel to see that specialist? hugs, sheila Aprilcupcake@... wrote: This happens to me too, just around the ankles.
