Guest guest
Elavil IS a Tricyclic antidepressant. It is NOT a SSRI and does not work on seratonin in any way nor on the reuptake of anything. Considering it as a selective seratonin reuptake inhibitor could be VERY serious and possibly fatal if mixed with some drugs that would be ok with SSRI's!! Drug interactions with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, especially with other psychotropics http://www.biopsychiatry.com/ssriinteract.htm Prescrire Int 2001 Feb;10(51):25-31 ABSTRACT (1) Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are involved in many drug interactions with potentially serious clinical consequences. (2) These interactions involve all SSRIs but particularly fluoxetine, which is the best-studied antidepressant in this family. (3) Because of their long elimination half-life (particularly fluoxetine) the risk of interactions persists for several days or even weeks after SSRI withdrawal. (4) Drug interactions with clinical consequences usually involve combinations of an SSRI with other psychotropics, especially monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) and " tricyclic antidepressants, " clozapine, lithium, methadone, etc. (5) The clinical consequences of drug interactions with SSRI are either due to overdosing of the drug combined, or to a serotonin syndrome with neuromuscular and vegetative (autonomic) symptoms. (6) Interactions with a number of other drugs have been reported, especially carbamazepine, phenytoin and oral anticoagulants, with a risk of overdose of these drugs. (7) The risk of hyponatraemia linked to SSRIs seems to be increased during concomitant treatment with diuretics. Elavil IS a " Tricyclic antidepressant " . Do not mix the two. The main types of antidepressant drugs in use today are: • Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline (Elavil), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline (Pamelor) • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs or serotonin boosters), such as fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft) • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors), such as phenelzine (Nardil), and tranylcypromine (Parnate) SOME MEDICATIONS THAT DON'T MIX WELL http://www.ect.org/tattler/news83.html THE ANTIDEPRESSANTS known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have become popular because they are considered to have fewer side effects and a much lower risk of overdose than older antidepressants. Nevertheless, SSRIs can be problematic when combined with other medications. There could be interactions among SSRIs and these common drugs: --Prozac, Zoloft: Elavil, Anafranil, Norpramin, Tofranil, Pamelor, Ludiomil, Valium, Xanax, Versed, Halcion, quinidine, Hismanal, Seldane, Lopressor, Inderol, Procardia, Adalat, Clozaril, Haldol, Moban, Triavil, Risperdal, Hellaril, codeine, Percodan, Talwin, lidocaine, Mevacor, tamoxifen, testosterone, dextromethorphan.
