Guest guest
Hi everyone someone mentioned having trouble swallowing all the pills we take. Seems like after awhile the littlest ones are the worst ones that get stuck. A good idea a dr gave me when my son was little and had trouble swallowing pills was this: take a small spoonful of icecream (pudding and applesauce work too) put the pill in it and it will just slide down your throat Also a friend told me another way: use a bottle when you take your pills, get a big gulp of liquid in your mouth with the pill and keep your mouth on the bottle. The force of the liquid in the bottle will help you get the pill down easily. Both work very well, icecream is not just for kids you know give yourself a treat instead of fighting and getting those darn pills stuck in your throat. Anyone who has to take 20-30+ pills a day will understand this problem its no fun. But these are both easy ways to fix it. Guest guest
-Hi Babs I agree I hate having pills get stuck. My fusion was done thru the front too and since then I have always had trouble swallowing all kinds of things. I almost think when they were working on my neck, they squished and moved stuff around so much it seems like my throat is smaller inside than it used to be, hence the trouble with pills and food going down. Almost everyone I have talked too with a fusion has had this problem. I wish they had at least warned me at the hospital before I came home or the dr had told me this might happen it wouldn't have scared me near as much when I got food stuck and couldn't get it down. I am alot more careful now with many foods that I know can get stuck. Anyway I hope this helps you if you need to use these tricks. Guest guest
Sharon, they do move stuff around when they go through the neck. I found this out right after they fused and plated my c4 and c6. Cause I had a spell then. I called the doctor and he said that things would be swollen for awhile because of being moved. Guest guest
As a nurse giving many pills to many people with swallowing trouble, one hint is to not put your head back like a lot of people do. Try putting your chin down toward your chest, it's a more natural position for the esophagus to open and the trachea to close, less chance of choking. But be sure that's an okay position for your neck according to your injury. Dee --------------------------------- Messenger with Voice. Guest guest
I am new here as well. My name is Diane and I had my neck fusion on Sept 7th, 2006. I had a 3 level fusion from C3/4 to 6/7. I was having trouble swallowing pills after the surgery and while it is getting better I still have problems. I was home alone and I scared my self once very badly when I tried to swallow a pill and it got caught in a bad place. I thought I was going to choke to death. I was able to cough it up and it flew about 10 feet when I expelled it. Not to even mention the pain it caused my newly fused neck. So now I crush the pill up into a powder and mix it into a tablespoon of yougart, it tastes terrible but it goes down nicely and then the second and third spoonful washes away the bad taste.
