Guest guest
Hi Everyone, There was a discussion on this list a while ago about how unacceptable the word `cripple` is and as far as I remember some european members weren`t as upset by the term (I may not be remembering correctly). I am noticing recently that the word `handicapped` is being used and I assume that this is not offensive in the US. Over here although you will still hear it used, it is not acceptable to most disabled people as it is looked on as originating from a time when disabled people with no way af earning a living had to beg on the streets, that is `cap in hand` which developed into `handicapped`. this may or may not be the origins of the word but I and many other disabled people find the word insulting. I don`t mean to offend anyone with this post, I just thought I would point out a difference in how words are viewed in different places Joyce.
