Guest guest
>Hi Sharon , Unfortunately I can't help. I got woken up by pain the other night too and coundn't go back to sleep, when I ordinarily would because I do take stuff to sleep. But I assume that if I'd taken something for the pain, I could have gone back to sleep, but it was too close to the time I needed to get up anyway. I suppose the solution is taking pain medication that lasts through the night. Relying on sleeping pills to help with sleeping through pain adds more medication to get addicted to. I know I'm addicted to the lunesta and the xanax I'm taking to sleep. It will be a bear to get off of. Supposedly there is one sleeping pill that is not addictive. That one is called Rozarem and works on the body's circadian rhythms with melatonin etc. I'm planning on getting the Rozarem to get off the lunesta and replacing the Xanax with a muscle relaxer like Flexeril when I see my pain doctor on Monday. Sharon, can you take more meds for pain so as not to get breakthrough at night? And are you having your back surgery soon? I suppose you could try the sleeping pills if you expect to use them only short term before your surgery. In that case, the lunesta does not leave me sleepy the next day, but it's expensive and as I said addictive in that you get rebound insomnia the next several nights. I only tried one night without it and couldn't sleep even with the xanax. My husband used Ambien for a while and he thought it was stronger than lunesta. However, he couldn't seem to think as effectively at work. Rochelle > Hi Everyone Looking for some help. There have been several people who > have mentioned they take > something to help them sleep. Guest guest
-Hi Sharon, I have been through just what you are going through with not being able to sleep at night. There were times that I would only be able to sleep for an hour or two at the most for three to four days at a time. My problem was not so much the pain ,but that I had one heck of a bout of depression. I guess that the pain had a lot to do with my depression. I finally was able to see what was going on and get some help. I'm on a good anti- depressiant{cymbalta 60mg} and have been able to get some much needed sleep. The times that I need to take someething to help me sleep I take temazepam 30mg. It has really helped me when I need to have something to help me get to sleep. I know that you said that the pain is waking you up and that you feel groggy from the sleep meds. I just wanted to let you know that I understand and that perhaps the drug that I'm on may help you. Well I hope that yopu will get the much needed sleep that you need soon. MAY YOU HAVE A BETTER DAY TOMORROW THAN YOU HAD TODAY. TAKE AS BEST CARE AS YOU CAN AND BE SAFE. LARRY G. Guest guest
HI Larry thanks for the info I will check into that. How long does it help you sleep? I mean can you sleep most of the nite?? I have done this for soooo lonnnnnnngggggg I am afraid at times that I will never sleep an entire nite. I feel lucky when I can sleep for 5-6 hrs straight which isn't often. But I was wondering if this medicine you take helps you sleep most of the nite, thats what I really need. Something to knock me out beside exhaustion:) I really hate this it always seems to go on for several days then exhaustion takes over and I finally rest longer but by then I am so tired I fall asleep when I sit down for a few minutes because I am so tired. Thanks for the info on your medicine I will ask my dr about it when I go in next times. Guest guest
-Hi Rochelle I tried the old Ambien and that was what left me groggy when I only got a few hours sleep. There were some other ones I have tried that I can't remember that left me feeling groggy all the next day I hated that feeling so I didn't take them long. I haven't tried Lunesta or the new Ambien Cr I think its called. I thought Lunesta was not supposed to be habit forming, isn't that what they said in the commercial?? I had my surgery 3 months almost now but I still hurt when I lay down to sleep. Nites have always been the worst for me its like my pain builds all day and by nite time I really feel the effects of anything I do that day. Plus I never know whats going to hurt my back or my leg or both. I take as many meds as I can and my main one is a 24 hr one but I don't think anything really always last 24 hrs. I haven't slept really great for a long long time and waking up at nite 2 or 3 times has been pretty noraml for me for a long time. Sleep for awhile, pain starts somewhere, wake up take some meds, watch tv and wait for them to kick in to bring the pain down. Sometimes by the time it does its close to sunrise so I just give up, make some coffee and get up. The strangest part of all is I can sleep better during the daytime, and longer too. Maybe cause it hurts less then I don't know but I do know its strange to be up when it feels like the whole rest of the world is out there sleeping, where I'd love to be. Guest guest
Sharon,I take the generic form of Restoril . It's called temazepam. It's a very affordable drug. I get a good nights sleep when I take it. I haven't had any side effects from it,yet. I'm on some strong pain meds so that may be why I'm not being woke up from the pain anymore. I hope that you will be able to find something that will help you soon. I know what it's like to not be able to get any sleep until you just fall out from the exhaustion. Then I take my pills as prescribed, but if there is any play, I take the ones that produce the most drowsiest at bedtime. I read, almost everynight, this makes my eyes tired. No matter what. something wakes me at 4:30, just like clockwork. I thought it was the first rise of the sun or birds etc, but obviously now it's not that. Some nights no matter what I can't sleep at all. I try to avoid naps after 2-3pm. I stop caffeine at 5pm. I'm often awoken by hunger pains. Also if I go several nights in a row without sleep, then I beg for the secret weapon, lovemaking. Works everytime. And damn it I'm an adult. If I absolutely can't sleep, I give in and get up and catch up on email, watch late night tv, etc. For me the most effective med I take for sleep is an antidepressant called immiprimine. 100-150mg does the trick. The worst offender to insomnia is Cymbalta. The earlier I take it in the day the better. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Guest guest
-Hi Dave thanks for all the ideas. I don't drink caffeine except in the morning so that doesn't bother me. I didn't realize cymbalta had a hand in it but I quit taking that right now. I know what you mean I wake up almost every morning around 3 -3:30 and I have no idea why except thats a schedule med time for me so maybe my brain just says " Time to take it get up idiot " I don't know. I thought about changing my med times around to see if that would help. Bed or chair it doesn't matter if I hurt I will wake up no matter how long I slept or not sleep. I would give a million dollars for a straight 8 hrs sleep, geez I haven't had one in years I don't think. But I gotta find a way to sleep more somehoe. Guest guest
Hi I've finally been able to get some quality sleep. I have my pain pill divided up throughout the day, with the heaviest dosage at nite, and the next heaviest dose in the morning, and the lightest in the afternoon. I know this doesn't make much sense, but it's helping me sleep. I try to take only one type of pain pill(an opiate) unless I have breakthrough pain. Anyways, I take this opiate at nite along with 1 mg. of Xanax, and I take it 90 minutes before I go to bed. I go to bed with a book and my body automatically wakes up at 3:15AM to make sure my husband has gone off to work, and I find I've fallen asleep with the book in my hands! I go right back to sleep, and wake up about 8:30AM. I figure I sleep at least 6-7 hours now. It sure makes a difference. I don't want to keep taking Xanax every nite, so I'll start weaning myself off it in a couple weeks, and see if I can get natural sleep. It sure is nice to have almost unbroken sleep. I'm trying an over the counter scar cream, maybe I'm in a hurry, but my neck scar isn't fading fast enough, it's been 6 weeks now since my fusion. Still have some pain, especially when I bend over. I'm going to call this afternoon and get an appt. to start things rolling for my shoulder arthroscopy. More fun.. Guest guest
Hi glad to hear you found a way to get some rest. Still only way I can is crash and burn like I did last nite, 3 nites of little to no sleep then I do finally. Geez no wonder I hate looking in the mirror some days Anyway don't worry your scar will be gone before you know it. I used neosprorene on mine to keep them soft and supply and they all faded away. Well they had now I have to go thru it again as I have bigger ones on my back to get rid of now but my neck I was more worried about so I understand. But still remember to be careful it hasn't been long. I hurt my neck somehow the other day and I swear it screamed for hrs and hrs killing me, so I know I can still hurt it even now, so be careful. Best wishes Sharon Group Owner > > Hi > I've finally been able to get some quality sleep. I'm trying an over the counter scar > cream, maybe I'm in a hurry, but my neck scar isn't fading fast enough, it's been 6 weeks now since my fusion. Still have some pain, especially when I bend over. I'm going to call this afternoon and get an appt. to start things rolling for my shoulder arthroscopy. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, Thanks for your reply, I guess I'm more concerned about my neck scar since it's so visible, and since I can't work any more I don't use makeup. I had an A/P lumbar fusion, I can't find a scar on my stomach from where they went in, but my husband says my back scar isn't bad at all, it goes along the crease in my back. I had to spend 8 days in the hospital with that surgery- I started bleeding out when they were working on the front, so they had to stop and transfuse me, then two days later they finished it up. It really spooked me, but I guess back surgery would make everyone nervous. We went grocery shopping the other day, I slipped twice on water spills that hadn't been mopped up yet-my heart sure was racing. With all the metal in my body, I'm afraid of what more damage could happen. I thought I could make it around the store just holding onto the cart, I think I'll go back to riding in the scooter. How is your neck? I hope it's not so painful now. Do you have to take pain medication every day for your problems? Take care of yourself, and thanks for all the advice.
