Guest guest
I just can't take the extreme tightness and achiness in my neck, shoulders which is making me extremely dizzy and anxious. I can't sleep due to this, can't function, or walk, have to hold on to things to even walk. This is the WORST part of my w/d and I have tried just about everything to help relax the muscles. The worst muscles are the ones that attach you neck to your upper shouders, the ones just behind your ears that go down to your throat, and I am sitting here in extreme apprehension and shaking. I just can't relax and it is making the muscles worse. As I am going down, the muscles are getting worse and worse. What can I do? It is affecting my eyes, where they get puffy and I know that the occipital muscles can affect the eyes. My muscles are literally shaking, and there are so many knots in them which are painful. I have tried heat, those microwave bean bag wraps, ice, Epsom salt baths, my husband massages, and sleeping on a myriad of neck pillows. I am at the end of my rope. This is such agony. I have suffered from a severe neck condition for many years, but w/d is causing my neck and muscles to tighten to the point where just walking or laying down is a chore. I am so DIZZY from them. I need to get to the dentist but feeling this bad from what the muscles are doing to me, is preventing from even walking outside. Has anyone here suffered like this, or is it just me. I don't read many posts about this condition. So I am just wondering if anyone has this and what they do for it. This is the worst symptom of them all. Sitting here is so hard, can't get these stupid muscles to relax. Tried stretching them too, but doesn't help and makes me more dizzy. Please, any suggestions here? Thanks so very much Waiting for some Tai Chi and yoga and meditation DVD's to arrive. Don't know if they will help or hurt. Not sure if I can even do them, will see. Everyone take care, Love, Nanci
Guest guest
Hi sorry to hear you are in so much pain. YES I have been thru it before with my neck and I know how much pain you are in. Nothing seemed to help me either. Its a vicious circle too the more you hurt the more you stress and tense and the worse it gets. The only thing I can suggest is muscle relaxers and moist heat and relax, any way you can to calm down. Try taking deep long breaths and concentrate on trying to feel those muscles and relax them. A long hot shower might help you too. I was at my wits end with that pain before I had my sugery so I know how much you are hurting. Also try and lay down if you can, I know just holding my head up hurt so much, it felt too heavy for my neck. So sorry for you. Sharon Group Owner- p.s. You might try the free d/l at www.wendi.com her cd's helped me to learn to relax better so it was easier to deal with the pain. May help you I don't know everyone is different. Hope you find a way to reduce the pain. - In neck pain , " Nanci " <wdomarew1@...> wrote: > > I just can't take the extreme tightness and achiness in my neck, > shoulders which is making me extremely dizzy and anxious. > > I can't sleep due to this, can't function, or walk, have to hold on > to things to even walk. > This is the WORST part of my w/d and I have tried just about > everything to help relax the muscles. > > The worst muscles are the ones that attach you neck to your upper > shouders, the ones just behind your ears that go down to your > throat, and I am sitting here in extreme apprehension and shaking. > I just can't relax and it is making the muscles worse. > > As I am going down, the muscles are getting worse and worse. > What can I do? > It is affecting my eyes, where they get puffy and I know that the > occipital muscles can affect the eyes. > My muscles are literally shaking, and there are so many knots in > them which are painful. > > I have tried heat, those microwave bean bag wraps, ice, Epsom salt > baths, my husband massages, and sleeping on a myriad of neck pillows. > I am at the end of my rope. > This is such agony. > I have suffered from a severe neck condition for many years, but w/d > is causing my neck and muscles to tighten to the point where just > walking or laying down is a chore. Guest guest
Nanci, sorry that you are in so much pain. Maybe you need a soft neck collar to use when you rest. I don't know if you can buy them or not but I had one when I had my car accident I wore it until they were able to do my surgery and it helped alot. Maybe your doctor can tell you where to get one. This will help to take some of the presure of your neck. Hugs and Prayers, Babs Chronic illness Chronic Pain You are not alone

I also have pain in my neck from having herniated disk at the C4-5 and having 2 that are bulging.{C5-6, & C6-7}. I also have the problem of disks bulging in my low back. The disks at the level of L4-5 level and at L5-S1 are protruding and the L4-5 are bulging.{AT LEST THEY WERE IN DECEMBER OF 2003 WHEN I HAD THE C/T MYLEOGRAM DONE. THEY MAY BE HERNIATED BY NOW FOR ALL I KNOW. MY BACK HURTS ALMOST ALL OF THE TIME NOW.} When I stand for 5 to 10 minutes both of my legs go numb and my back hurts like crazy. My back also hurts if I sit in this chair at my computer for very long.{and it's a good chair to boot} I can relate to you with the pain in the neck and shoulders. My neck hurts 24/7. I also have the severe pain in the muscles in my neck and shoulders all of the time. The pain meds help ,but I still hurt . I also know how you feel when it comes to not being able to sleep at night. I've been there and know how it is when you want to go to sleep ,but hurt so bad that sleep is impossible.{at least until you just fall out from the exhaustion} There were times that I could not go to sleep for as much as 30 to 36 hours. Then I would sleep for what would seem like forever.{even then I would wake up many times from the pain} I found something that would help me to get the muscles to relax for a while at a feed and grain store. I use the horse liniment ABSORBING VETERINARY GEL.It has a spearmint scent and really works for me. I also have used another liniment called HORSEMAN'S DREAM. It's a lotion and has really helped me. Both of these items are inexpensive and are safe for you to use. I wish that I could get them to you right now so that you could try them. I also have the problem of ringing in my ears from the injury to my neck. Sometimes I get a little dizzy from it ,but not very often. You can also make a heating pack from rice. It's easy to make just sew it into a cloth bag, throw it in the microwave and your ready to go. I just thought that I'd throw that in as one more suggestion. I wish that I could do something for you that would give you the much needed relief that you deserve. I send my best to you and pray the you will get the relief that that you deserve. Guest guest
Larry, do you know of any websites where you can get the horse liniment, and the horseman's dream lotion you were talking about? I've been having shoulder muscle pain for over three months and the only thing that helps me for a few weeks is a cortisone shot which I want to avoid again because of having Type two diabetes. I'm getting an ultrasound done on them at Radiology this week and Also a chiropractor Doctor. (excuse my spelling). Any way, I work a full time job and I'm tired of having discomfort in my shoulders and neck. Right now I use Watkins Icy blue which helps some, but eventually I need to start trying something else. Guest guest
Hi just be VERY CAREFUL using any horse or animal medicines on your neck as they are quite strong. I have used the absorbine on my horses and even diluted it made my hands tingle. That one I know you are supposed to dilute NEVER use it full strength on yourself, even my horses can't take it that way. I have never heard of the other one though. Anything you get I'd try out on my leg or arm first and make sure you NEVER Put stuff like that on right after a shower when your pores are wide open cause anything can burn you then. One place you might find them is called Valley Vet its in Mo. I think I order stuff from their catalog all the time. Just never looked for stuff like that as I get that locally at a horse supply -store. If you still can't find it let me know I'll give you some more places to check onine. What I used and still do for pain is called PAIN STOP its comes in a rollon type container and its GREAT!!!!!! Hope this helps some. Guest guest
Hi I have found it at a HyVee grocery store in their drug dept and I also saw it at a local drug store. Maybe do a search and see what comes up?? Also there is caspian (not sure of the spelling) its supposed to be herbal and kinda of hot so you use little But I heard it works better over time. Its made from some kind of peppers I think. Hope you find something to help. Moist heat helped me alot too. I had a therabead neckwrap that I could heat up in the micro. That can be found in the links section.Good luck. Sharon Group Owner > > I'm glad you told me that. I can't use the Watkins analgesek balm because of burning to much. Guest guest
My PT gave me this ointment to help relieve pain and it's really good. I've also used horse linaments in the past but this stuff is really really good. http://drhoys.com/faq.html It's their pain relief gel and it is truly non-greasy -- many of them are not and leave your clothes and bedding a mess. Also with this stuff you can apply once, twice or three times in one session for more relief. It stays hot for hours. I highly recommend it and need to get a new bottle myself. I'm also with Sharon in that moist heat -- or even just heat -- helped my pain a lot. When it's bad, I sleep with one of those blue hot/cold packs you can heat in the microwave and think it helps me a lot. This was for muscle pain and spasming in the neck and shoulder - I don't think it will help as much with nerve pain down the leg or arm but I'm not sure about that. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi all I have a comment and a question- my comment is that I have a lot of inflammation mostly due to arthritis and a yet unknown diagnosisof a problem in my shoulder. I can actually feel the heat radiating from there and below my knees. My PT told me to try Biofreeze, it comes as a roll-on, and I've gotten it from my Chiro. and different sites on-line. It really seems to cool the areas down, and eases the pain. She told me not to use anything with heat on an inflammed area. Just thought i would share that info. My question is concerning Medicare-I am not yet eligible for it, not until Feb. My friend just became eligible, and they took it out automatically from her check. She was not asked if she wanted it. I called Medicare and got an idiot who just passed me on to another phone number. My question is-how do you decline Medicare before they take it out of your check? I believe i can get better insurance through my husband's job, but can't get a straight answer. I get SSDI, I don't believe I'm old enough for some of these supplemental programs I've seen advertised. Can anyone direct me to someone or somewhere that can explain my options in basic English and not all this mumbo-jumbo stuff? I'm really confused. Thanks a lot Jeannie Messenger with Voice. Guest guest
Jeannie, I have no idea on your Medicare question. Hopefully someone will come along with an answer or at least an idea for you. On the " heat on inflammation " point, I always wondered about that too. My PT used heat and recommended I use a lot of heat when the herniation first happened. I've continued to use it and it feels better when I do. I would imagine that at the very beginning especially was also the time when there was the most inflammation and I thought about your point then - that being that common wisdom is to put cold on inflammation, not heat. I never asked - should have. But I know that heat increases circulation and circulation speeds healing so that is probably the reason it's used. For me personally, I could not use cold because I get muscle spasms like terrible charley horses when I get cold. That can happen just from going into a store with an overly cold AC draft. I'm just hypersensitive to cold. I also have asthma (which is basically reactive airways AKA muscle spasms in the bronchial tubes) and cold air or even drinking an icy cold drink can set my asthma off too. And I've been known to get hives from having my hands in cold water too long (washing a bunch of veggies for example). It's weird but it's a real problem for some people. Guest guest
Hi Jeannie I read two different things one on Medline and one from Mayo clinic online. Medline said take anti-inflammatory medicines and heat for muscle spasm and arthritis or Fibromyalgia. The Mayo Clinic site said Use cold and heat theraphy may relieve pain in the initial days but some studies show that heat is more effective approarch. Cold or ice applied can reduce inflammation and swelling by constricting blood vesselsreducing pain.> The cold also acts to slow nerve impulses and makes it less likelythat your muscles will contract in this way. It went on to say you can alternate the two and I couldn't paste it in my computer is having issues with that Hope this helps some.
Cold or ice applied can reduce inflammation and swelling by constricting blood vessels reducing pain.> The cold also acts to slow nerve impulses and makes it less likely that your muscles will contract in this way. It went on to say you can alternate the two and eventually if you will find one works better than the other use that one. SorryI couldn't paste it in my computer is having issues with that Hope this helps some. Guest guest
I once had a bad puncture wound and major contusion to the shin as well as massive bruising from the seat belt when I was in an accident. My Dr's PT at that time, had me doing hot/cold packs for 10-15 min each. I questioned why not just one type and he explained to me that using them alternately was almost like forcing the blood in and out, a pumping action to get the blood moving and cycling through the injured areas to speed healing. Also my sister has major inoperable issues with her S1 area and at times gets terrible groin pain which she alleviates using ice packs. But she puts hot packs on her lumbar region. I think it's a matter of finding what works best to help you deal with your pain. On 5/24/06, darkstarzz1019 <darkstarzz1019@...> wrote: ..... Guest guest
It is very much like a super version of Icy-Hot or BenGay ointment. It has menthol and other types of compounds that heat and stimulate the skin causing increased circulation where it's applied. It's stronger than the normal mentholated ointment used by humans so it has to be used with great care. Guest guest
HI Pamala, I have been gone for a week or I would have responded to you before now. Horseman's Dream is a lotion that contains Aloe Vera, ISOPROPYL Alcohol, Isopropyl Myristate,Propylene Glycol, Camphor,Polysorbate 80,Allantoin Menthol,Eucalyptus oil,Sorbic Acid, Methylparaben. It also has Triethanolamine. and Carbomer-940. MY DOCTOR TOLD ME THAT IT'S SAFE TO USE.IT'S NOT A STRONG LOTION LIKE MANY HORSE LINIMENTS . IT DOES NOT BURN ,NOR DOES IT HAVE A STRONG ,UNPLEASANT ODOR LIKE MANY LOTIONS,OR CREAMS. IT CAN BE USED SEVERAL TIMES A DAY AND MAY PROVIDE RELIEF FOR THE PAIN FROM THE MUSCULAR SORENESS THAT COMES FROM THE CONSTANT STRAIN OF THE MUSCLES OF THE INJURED AREA. I have been using it for several years and have had good TEMPORARY relief from the muscular pain that I have been having due to mmy injuries. I hope that this has been of service to you. MAY YOU HAVE A BETTER DAY TODAY THAN YESTERDAY AND NOT AS GOOD A DAY AS TOMORROW. TAKE AS BEST CARE AS YOU CAN AND BE SAFE.
