Guest guest
Welcome to the Group Beverly you have come to the right place. I have had 2 surgeries so far and from the looks of it I have more in my future. I had a microdiscectomy on my l-4 l-5 in october 2002 then 9 months later they did a caged fusion with a fake disc in the same area. I have massive scar tissue surrounding a vital nerve and they are saying something about my S-1 I have waited almost 2 years and have procrastinated as much as I can because the thought of going under AGAIN scares the you know what out of me. Not only that but I have 3 children and I have been much of a burden on them already and they are still young. I dont want them to take care of me I want to be able to take care of them. So I will wait this one out until I absolutely have to do it My doctor says that if I waited it would not complicate things so i just have to keep myself in the mind set that I will wait until I cant take it anymore. I suffered for 7 years before they ever figured out what was wrong with me to begin with so I think that recovering from the fusion is my first priority. they said my bone growth is slow so I am healing really slow. I am almost fully fused i guess from what he said to me in March when they took xrays but I am still waiting for the MRI. I hope you enjoy this group I look forward to getting to know you. I also dont want to discourage you to doing something that you might need to have right away I am jsut a big chicken and my doc knows this and I dont think he would allpw something to go if it was going to be dangerousbnnn2005 <bevnunn@...> wrote: My nmae is Beverly. Guest guest
Beverly its sounds like we have much more in common. I have suffered with depression for many many years I am doing better these day but for almost 15 years i sought much help through church counselors and phsyciatric. This was till they found out exactely what was wrong with me. in 1993 or 4 I had fallen at work and it wasnt until 2002 that a doctor was willing to follow through and figure out what was wrong with me but by then i had lost all feeling in my right leg. before then all the doctors and er's told me there was nothign wrong or i had pulled a muscle or it was all in my head that is where the phsyciatric counseling came into the picture. When they finally figired out what was wrong with me they told me it was too late to go after my job for restitution. there was a 5 year statute of limitations and i thin i missed it by a little less than a year. some have told me to talk to a lawyer anyway because sometimes that is not the case but I am in so much pain that I cant even think about adding another thing to my list of duties as a mom wife and human being. I hope and pray you get better real soon Sincerely Janine In Cali beverly nunn <bevnunn@...> wrote: Janine Sounds like we have the same things going on pretty much. Guest guest
Hi beverly, My ex had 2 surgeries, the first a lamenctomy at L5-S1 6/99, then Fusion starting at L5-S1 and up for 3 disks, with the removal the the disk at L5-S1 and bone graft. He did well for quite awhile, but unfortunately did not follow through with any form of exercise and put on alot of weight which caused much more pain. I guess what I'm saying is you need to follow through with after care if you do have this next surgery. Until he started gaining weight he was getting better. No extreme activity was asked of him. Just some simple walking and swimming. No physical therapy. The only other probelm he had physically, was he found out by accident he could not dive into a pool. My now 20 year old son and I were watching and as soon as he went off that diving board we knew it would be a bellyflop. He came up out of the water with a very red and sore belly. LOL. Guest guest
Hi Beverly, I have not had surgeries yet. I face surgery here in the next little bit. I have my choice between single level fusion(tlif) and the Artificial Disc. I want the ADR. I understand the fear and worry. I have put it all off for a long time too but I can't live like this anymore. I wish I knew some easier ways to go about all this. I can offer my support and encouragement. Keep me posted on how you are doing? :-) Katrina in Idaho > My nmae is Beverly. > Ive had 3 back surgeries so far. The 2nd one resulted in a spinal > fusion from a work injury i had. Guest guest
Hi Beverly, I can understand about being scared to go under. I've had numerous surgeries and not once have I had any problem. I don't know if you've ever had surgery. Of course there are always risks that should be explained, but most of the time the worst is some nausea and/or vommiting when you wake up. These days alot of doctors put anti-nausea meds in your I.V. when you're taken to recovery to avoid this. While I'm not fond of surgery, a few times, the idea of getting some really good sleep as a result of being under and how much you sleep after, is appealing. I don't sleep well. Have an in-depth conversation about this with your doc and ask to meet the anesthealogist (is that spelled right?)not the day of surgery as is common, but before you commit to surgery. Discuss all your fears and concerns. I really think it would help alot Hope this helps. Also have an in-depth talk with the surgeon, again about your fears, concerns and what could possibly go wrong. Ask any and all questions you have. If either get inpatient with you, get another opinion/doc. You have a right to answers to ALL your questions. Take Care, Lynda --- beverly nunn <bevnunn@...> wrote: > Lynda > Thxs for the info. Yeah, excersie is important. I do > the treadmill and now > swim some. Guest guest
Janine Im sorry to hear all this. I so sorry it took that long for them to figure this out. Workcomp can be crazy. When i got injured at work they sent me to theyre dr. and all he said was its muscle spasm's and gave me med. and sent me right back to work. 3 months later i chose to seek my own Dr. and found out i messed up a disk that resulted in the fusion. It then collapsed my L5-s1 disk due to stress on the spine from the fusion--i filed workcomp stuff myself with Depatment of workcomp claims---went to court---they said it was preexisting from my 1st disectomy on that area and i was past the statue of limitations as well---i proved(without an attorny) that i had no problem with this disk untill after the fusion--so this was a new injury. The judge agreed in my favor --this was a new work injury and statue of limitations did not apply. So, they are responsible for the second disk surgery, all bills and med's for life. I had a microdiscectomy on my l-4 l-5 in october 2002 then 9 months later they did a caged fusion with a fake disc in the same area. Guest guest
Sleep seems to be next to nothing for the members of this group. I am up at LEAST 4 times a night. I am luck if I can sleep 2 hours in a row. It gets to be soooo irritating sometimes. The pain and stiffness is the worst during the night. Especially when you have to pee real bad and you cant get up. I just pray I make it every time so far my prayers have been answered. Tonight I pray for everyone to get a good nights rest. Guest guest
Thanks SOOOOOO Much Beverly I really appreciate knowing that you are there for me as I appreciate everyone else in this group. I am no longer taking any anti depressants they determined that with all the pain meds and all the anti depressants ocd and panic and anxiety meds they had me on that it was causing me more depression than if I were not on them. So I am now only taking the pain anti inflamitories and nerve meds. so far so good I have no longer experienced suicidal tendancies and I am happy for the most part there are days that getting outside is not an option and I tend to notice that I close all the blinds on those days My husband actually made a comment recently that he noticed I was getting sad and I do have to say for the first time ever he took some initiative to get me out of the house even though it was in the front yard he got me out there becasue I was so intrigued that he even noticed that there was something not right I just had to oblidge his offer to go and help him wash the truck. I had control of the hose as he scrubbed so he was a little nervous but I was a good girl LOL Sincerely Janine In Calibeverly nunn <bevnunn@...> wrote: Janine Im sorry to hear all this. Guest guest
Hi, I still have alot of problems falling asleep and for the most part sleep at least 5 hours. The problem is sometimes I don't fall asleep until 6a.m. I realized several years ago PART of the problem (I've ALWAYS had problems falling asleep, even as a child)since the chronic pain started. I know when I wake up I am going to be in extreme pain. At least while I'm awake I can take my pain meds (NO they do not make me drowsy). If I get lucky and sleep more than 5 hours, I am extremely grateful for the rest, but then the pain is even more extreme when I wake up and worry over how long it will take to get the pain under control. I know, I now know part of my sleeping difficulty and there is nothing I can do about it, yet night after night I sit up watching t.v. Not quite rational thinking, but pain can do that. (Yes I'm on sleeping pills too). Take care all, Lynda --- Janine Newman <jnewmans1@...> wrote: > Sleep seems to be next to nothing for the members of > this group. I am up at LEAST 4 times a night. Guest guest
Janine Hmm, hadnt heard of it done like that. As far as the adr it just came out here--fusion's were all they did before that. This was to replace the fusion --not having to permanently lock two disk together and the adr would give you more movement. Guest guest
Hello Beverly, why did the first fusion fail?? Did they not put a cage and rods in there to hold it or did the disc fall apart? Sorry I've never heard of one failing like that I am guessing somehow the dr did something wrong the first time. But if you've been suffering for 2 yrs I think I'd go ahead and get it done and fixed right this time. Just ask the dr lots of questions and make sure he is the one you want if he is truly a good surgeon he will not mind you asking him about the surgery and making sure you feel at ease about it. Although I know you are scared I sure wouldn't want to continue to live in pain if there was some way to fix it, I'd give it a shot. Guest guest
I have heard of a fusion not taking. My doctor says that sometimes the bone wont grow and they have to go in and try I think it is called bone graphs and cadavers. They were really concerned with me because I am a somker and said that the bone growth is much slower they gave me this bone stimulator its like a george jetson jet pack and I was to wear it for 2 hours a day for the first year. my bone has grown just slowly the cadaver bone took just fine and they say sometimes when they use cadavers they dont take and the body regects it. Has anyone had this and have any advice on this issue?ThxsBeverly Discover Find restaurants, movies, travel & more fun for the weekend. Check it out!
