mentioned a very good point in the last post--

In regards to SLEEP!

The one thing that I 've tried to tell new moms (just new moms in general

not New Apraxic moms) is that SLEEP is sooooo very vital when it comes to our

children's existence. Or should I say HEALTHY existence!? Sleep is just as

important as good nutrition, and without a decent night's sleep (and day's sleep

for younger ones who need naps) the children will NOT grow and develop as

they should.

If I could pick a few things to educate new moms with- it would be to get

their children firmly routed in a good sleep pattern/routine-- because I've seen

it make all the difference in the world in regards to my children's health.

anyhoo-- that is probably sooooo off topic-- but it just came to mind when

mentioned maybe the good mood was due to a good night's sleep-- because

it truly is so vital to good health

I think good 'ole Ferber has a chart in the book " Solve Your Child's

Sleep Problems " , but I think this varies a lot. For example, most

adults think a good night's sleep is eight hours, but a few years

back I read a study that showed the average person actually needs 9-

1/2 hours per night! B.C. (before children), I felt my best with

that amount, and I thought I was a freak of nature.

Now, my kids all sleep a ton, probably more than anyone in their

classes. If it was just , I would say it's the low tone or

some other " issue " , but it's all of them. Everyone of them is in bed

between 6:30 and 7:00pm. The boys all wake about 11-1/2 or 12 hours

later, and (8) gets up with an alarm at 6:40 (never earlier).

On weekends, she'll sleep past 8:00am or even 9:00am if it's been a

busy week. For us, more sleep = better behavior. Guaranteed.

Unfortunately, this really limits what we can do outside the house.

I have chosen sleep over most activities. I would love to run around

and do karate, art, music, gymnastics, scouts, sports, etc. with all

of them. Instead, they come home, eat, play, do program/homework,

read, craft, bathe, all in under 4 hours. Now that basketball season

is over ('s team was, sadly, 1 and 9.), all that's left is

Brownies.

I often wonder if we are the norm and the rest of the world is

fighting it, or whether we are just very tired people here.

You know-- a while back I happened upon a book that helped us get my

youngest into a good sleep pattern/routine. It's called " The Sleep Easy

Solution " ,

and it DOES have charts on what amounts of sleep the different ages would

need. Of course it's a generality, and each child will be different, but it's

a

pretty good " gauge " as to where to start.

Amazon.com has a great price on the book now-- under $10 I think
