,

I'll certainly keep you all in my prayers. I hope your wife gets proper treatment and relief so she can come home soon and that you can hold up until then. It sounds like you are the only advocate she has so do speak up to this first Dr who apparently is now on the right track. Got to keep him moving along to help him do a good job helping her.

Hang in there,

thank you babs,

it has been very frustrating; i can barely see my kids over the laundry and

dishes. :) both of which are usuallly my responsibility - but my wife, no

matter what condition she may come home in will try to clean the house if i

dont beat her to it! it was hectic at first, but we've gotten into a

routine i guess; at least the oldest is going to school on time now.

take care

rob

Oh Rob does it ever end for you?

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect no matter

what their situatation is. It is very WRONG that she is being treated

this way. Can the doctor, that has a clue, transfer her to a

different hospital. If not take it to Administration. You would think

that it would concern them. Every time I have left a hospital after a

stay they have called me asking about my care or the care of one of

my kids. Surely they could do something. You would think. Squeaky

wheel gets the oil. Make a stink about it till she is getting the

proper treatment.

These nurses, especially, should have much more compassion. That is

what nurses do. Right?

How is she now? Is there any improvement? Is the 'good ' Doc still

the treating doctor?

I wish I were closer to where you are I could try to help. If there

is something I can do let me know. And please keep us posted on how

you and your family are doing.

Your family is in my prayers.

Take care,

Katrina

you would not believe how far the hospital will go to support their workers.

they would not admit to anything that went wrong, and lied about several

points out right. this includes the administration. the only thing i got

from them theat helped a little was a voucher to take to the pharmacy worth

100$ (it did not cover all of the meds though)

If not take it to Administration. You would think

>that it would concern them. Every time I have left a hospital after a

>stay they have called me asking about my care or the care of one of

she cried literally the whole time she was there. and begged for meds that

would work, and even told them to stop some of them (vicoden) because she

knew it would not work at that dosage and did not want to increase her

already high tolerance. they would not stop or alter anything.

she made it out. and went to another hosp the next day, because her pain

became severe again. this was saturday before easter. they gave her a shot

and her pain went away; it was non narcotic, but it was a hospital brew and

could not be prescribed. they were able to get the tests results from the

other hospital and found that she has some " disease " in her discs mid-way up

her spine. we now have to see a nuero surgeon so i don't know exactly whats

going on. we are working on getting her an appt right now. her parents

drove half way and met up with us to take the kids for a week; it's my

oldest's spring break.

thank you so much for being there for me/for us. it really means alot, and

helps to keep me going when all i want to do is sit in a corner and cry.

thank you again. i will keep you posted.

Rob,

Please don't think that way. If it is how it sounds, that is. Even

though life is so very difficult right now you have so much. You have a

wife and two little boys who would never be the same if you were gone.

Better to have you as you are than not at all!

So glad to hear that your wife is out of the hospital. I hope she is ok.

Keep us posted, ok?

Your friend,

Katrina :-)

Hi Rob!

I am new to this group.. but not new to being an advocate for myself in

situations such as yours. I had a horrible experience at a hospital getting

an MRI done. I ended up having to come back the next day. Before I would let

them do anything, my husband and I got a Quality Assurance (I think that is

what it was called) person from Administration to come down and monitor

everything. That man ended up offering us a " settlement " but I just wanted

to never go back.

I've also been in the ER several times with migraines just to have some of

the staff thinking I was " med seeking " or faking.

You have to be an advocate and stand up for yourself or your spouse. If you

see something going on that is wrong or something that ISN'T going on, Speak

UP! Get an Administrator.. make noise!

I hope things get better. I feel horrible for you and your wife and hope she

gets to feeling better real soon!

i know that one day im going to be better for myself and for them.

HI Rob hope your wife is doing better now. If I were you I'd

complain to the hospital administator about the treatment she got.I

doubt he will see you but I'd sure sit down and write the guy a nice

letter and tell him his staff sucks as far as patient treatment.

Also if you remember the peoples names mention them in the note too.

Its sad how badly some hospitals treat people. My father in law

would have died in the hospital if family memebers hadn't been there

to watch over him, the nursing staff was horrible there. Luckily my

sister had great nurses when she was in the hospital. But I know one

close by that I wouldn't go too if I was dying in pain, I'd rather

sit in a car an hour and go to a GOOD hospital than go there cause I

swear they'd let you die in the ER there!!!!!!!I hope you and your

family are doing better by now and that your wife will be well and

home soon. Best wishes Sharon Group Owner

thank you pamala,

actually by the time we got to an administrator it seemed as if the nurses

had too. they knew they messed up but treated us no better. we are

actually (with the help of my father in law) i believe going to file a law

suit. not sure yet still waiting to hear from the lawyer. thank you

again.

rob

ps they actually called security on me because of the uproar i was in. she

is now hospitalized 45 minutes away in another city and so far has been

receiving excellant care.

thank you sharon,

they have ruled out medical issues i guess and are putting it down to

panic/anxiety attacks. they are keeping her overnite again and trying some

new stuff, i thought i was having problems dealing with my back and loss of

job; seems it might be hurting her more then me. last night was her first

bad experience with them and i had to drive out there at 1a to calm her and

to get them to put her back on her valium. they took her off without

warning and shes been on it for a couple of weeks now from her psychiatrist;

and this is after she had a full day of testing. more mri, another spinal

tap and so forth.. her pain was out of control-they did not give her the

adavan they said they would before doing that to her back and then cut her

off her meds simply because they did not pass on the right info from one

doctor to the next. but after talking to the floor nurse and then the head

nurse i got everything fixed back, but man this stuff is exhausting.

her father came down because i called and told him she was back in the

hospital and i broke down and started crying on the phone it was a little

too much for me. i dont know if youve watched some one have a seizure but

it is very scary and when i was holding her to keep her from hurting herself

i screwed my back up. and im trying to check her in and hold the kids and

not fall over myself. he was kind enough to drive back from washington dc

to pick the baby back up, and take him for two weeks. we are filing a

lawsuit against the other hospital; well her father is getting in touch with

his lawyer to see about it anyways who knows. each time i go to see her its

a minimum of 1 1/2 hours in the car and ive already spent a hundred dollars

in two days time on gas. its getting pretty crazy around here. i was

telling jeannie that im going to be able to write a novel when its all aver

with. im glad you got to enjoy your trip, and that guy who bumped into you

would have needed your cane after i got done with him if i had been there;

screw that. rude ass people. take care

--Hi Rob I hope your wife is doing a little better now back on her

meds. I am sorry to hear that she has been doing so badly. -And I

know all the driving back and forth and taking care of the kids has

had to been hard on you. I think the saying is " god doesn't give us

more than we can handle " well at times like this I wonder. Cause it

sure seems he has given your family way too many problems lately.

Hopefully with the right meds and some rest she will be fine soon, I

sure pray so. Sorry to hear your back is doing bad again too I know

that will make it all tougher on you too. Hope you can find sometime

in there somewhere to get off your feet for a bit and rest it some.

It makes me so angry when I find people like that guy now, I never

realized before how rude people were to people with canes, walkers

and wheelchairs till I started using my cane. I've always opened

doors or helped handicapped people just because I felt it was the

right thing to do. I would NEVER do to anyone some of the things

I've had done to me.One of these days the paper will read " Crazy

lady goes bezerk with her

cane " !!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are many times I wish I was a great big

huge person instead of being so little, I think just one ugly look

from someone large would send those people packing lol. Oh well I

guess I'll keep opening doors for little old ladies i wheelchairs

and glare at idiots like them for now. Thanks for the thoughts I

appreciate it. hang in there I'll keep you

and your family in my prayers for a speedy recovery for all.Sharon

When I joined this group just a month or so ago, I couldn't imagine how hard

it would be for a child to be in a psychiatric hospital and how parents

would cope. Now I know first hand - I have no choice but to deal with it

in order to get my son (10 years old) the best treatment. If I allowed

myself to become parallized by depression I would be no help to him. I

can't believe how quickly he has gone downhill. He went from having bad

thoughts about dying and having things happen to himself and his mom and dad

to being terribly depressed, agitated and unable to cope. 10 days ago, when

he started talking about wanting to kill himself, we took him to the ER and

they put him in a partial day program. It got to the point where he felt so

unsafe that we couldn't let him out of our sight at night because he felt

the impulse to jump out the 2nd floor windows.

On the way to the program yesterday, he felt the impulse to get out of the

car and run. The doors were locked with child safety locks, so he tried

first to open his window then he tried cllimbing into the front seat to open

the door. When we arrived, he bolted from me and ran across the parking lot

into a thicket. It took 15-20 minutes and the help of a policeman to get

him out. There's a hospital facility right there at the day program, so we

were able to check him in there. While waiting for check-in, I had to hold

his arm tightly because he kept trying to run. They had to put us in an

office where I could sit in a chair blocking the door. Even then he tried

opening the windows until someone came to sit with us.

His behavior now and for the past couple of days has been so strange. A

couple of nights ago he told me he wanted to confess something - that he's

been making up this whole ocd thing just to stay home from school and to get

attention. Then he had the impulse to jump out a window. He keeps

alternating between saying he doesn't have ocd or that he greatly exagerates

it to saying that he can't take it and that he wants to kill himself. He

also alternates between saying that he would never hurt himself because the

idea makes him really sad for us or that he would never run away to talking

about different ways he can kill himself and how he wants to run away.

I won't go into how heartwrenching it was to leave him there or how hard it

is to see him for just 1 hour a night and talk to him for 10 minutes a day

in the afternoon. I want to have faith in the hospital but I'm worried

because yesterday he had no case worker or psychiatrist assigned to him yet

and this morning his case worker was very rushed and somewhat abrupt on the

phone and she didn't say much or ask anything about him. All she said was

that he's doing fine and that he was participating in their school and that

she'll talk to me tomorrow when she and the psychiatrist meet with us for

the first time.

Has anyone had positive experiences with hospitalization? Has anyone had

their child there until their meds started working?/How long did it take?

How did you cope?

There is one very good thing that has happened. A doctor at the MGH ocd

clinic has agreed to treat my son - starting in a mere 3 weeks! This is

despite having no referral from an MGH affiliated doctor and despite the

fact that I was told they were not accepting new ocd patients. Plus, they

will take our insurance. I see a light at the end of the tunnel but the

trip there is so long and scarey.

Sorry for this very long e-mail. I don't know when and how often I'll be

able to check e-mail over the next few days, so if I don't reply to

responses, its not because I don't appreciate the advice/suggestions.

Thanks for listening.

Oh Tamra, lots of ((((hugs)))) for you!!!! Like you, before, I can

only imagine the anguish of how hard this must be, like that

terrible feeling in my chest if I think of ever having to go.

And, like you, I would be wondering about care. Just keep your eyes

open but trust that he's in a good place for him right now (no

jumping out or running away here). And so GREAT that the OCD doctor

will treat him so soon!! So that light IS ahead, it's just

distressing going through so much now!

I do know they shouldn't release your son until he's stable, not a

threat to himself or in danger of running off, etc. So I imagine

the meds will have to kick in somewhat or he will just calm down on

his own.

And hard as it is, take this time for yourself to sleep, relax, run

all those errands you've missed, socialize or whatever. And then

you'll be refreshed and ready for him when he gets home!

When you can, let us know how you and he are!

Tamara--I feel for you! My daughter was hospitalized when she was 8 for

1 week with a feeding tube and then she went to day treatment from

8-6:00 for 3 weeks. It was so hard! We were able to stay with her

during the 1 week in hospital and it was still torturous to realize that

my child couldn't function anymore. She has had some great years after

that, but we are in a tough spot again with her OCD. What helps me is

to know that with the right medication and/or therapy, they can do great!

How are his friends taking this? Have you told anyone what's going on

and what is their reaction? That was a hard part for our daughter

because it was hard to explain to friends.

I hope things turn around soon for you.

**** Hi -- I can definitely feel for you, having been in a position similar

to yours. Of course the worst part was following the ambulance to the

hospital, over 70 minutes away from where we live (the nearest facility for kids

under 13). For me, I took great comfort in finally realizing (the God voice!)

that I was following an ambulance and not a hearse -- she was finally getting

help. My daughter was 10 then, and celebrated her 11th birthday on her 2nd

day in the hospital. She hated the first day or two there. However, by Day

3, having started medications, she said -- " mom, I'm having normal thoughts,

like 'I wonder what is for lunch' " . She started to ENJOY being in the

hospital. She finally felt like she wasn't so alone in her mental struggles.

She

stayed 6 days the first time. A month later she went back -- this time for

14 days. They did a number of med adjustments while she was there. She

especially enjoyed the group therapy time, when the kids shared with one

another.

Two weeks later, she went back one more time -- this time for only 2 nights.

So.... all in all.... in started out horrible, but ended up being a

positive experience in a few ways.

1. She got great psychological testing while there

2. they could work with meds in a contained environment

3. She didn't feel so " wierd " since she finally met other kids with issues

It seems like it did take a day or two to get things really lined up --

I don't think I got any info for a day or so. The case worker gave me a call

for some permissions, and the hospital needed to get in touch with 's

normal therapist. Dr. visits were pretty short - I never did meet her, though

I spoke on the phone once or twice. Most interaction was with the case

manager.

Good luck to you, and hang in there! It will get easier. Oh, another

thing I did was to let about 50 of our closest family, friends, and church

members know (via email and phone) what was going on. They prayed for ,

offered babysitting for little sister, brought food -- very supportive. I was

in

such a fog during that time -- the support of family and friends was

wonderful. We asked them to keep it to themselves and not share with their

kids, in

order to protect 's privacy. was fine with this, and appreciated

the prayer support.

is now nearly 14 -- she still goes up and down, but is much better

than 3 years ago!!!! She hasn't been back to the hospital in almost 3 years

now!

Tamara,

I'm so sorry to hear about your son! If you need to talk, I'm here.

While your son is hospitalized try to do things for yourself and other family

members. I know how hard it is, but you have to realize you did the right

thing! It's not your fault. I'm sure your feeling guilty for putting him in, but

if he's trying to get out of the car, you had absolutely no choice.

I've had to hospitalize my daughter 2x and I know how heart wrenching it is!

Usually they wil try to diagnose and stabilize your child before they discharge.

My daughter's first one was 30 days and her 2nd was only 8 days.

Hang in there and take care of yourself (((HUGS)))))
