Need advice on my computer

I am having a problem with my computer. Since so many

of you seem to be so good with computers, I thought I'd

see what y'all think.

Since I was in ton, whenever I turn on my

computer, a screen comes up that says that I didn't turn

my computer off correctly. This is untrue, as I always

shut it down the way I was taught, and have never had a

problem before.

Anyway, when the screen comes up, it says that it needs

to run a " scandisk " to make sure that drive C has no

errors in it. It then runs the scandisk, and when it's

complete, another screen comes up showing a grid. It

has a legend at the bottom which shows if there are any

bad clusters. Apparently, there is a bad cluster on my

drive C, as this is what it tells me. It says it's

going to clean up the files to prevent me from seeing

the message again.

Now, the irritating thing is is that everytime I turn on

my computer, I get the same message. I am shutting my

computer off correctly each time by clicking on the

start button, then clicking shut down, and then a screen

comes up saying " restart in MS-DOS. I click that on,

and the computer turns off. This is the way I have been

turning off my computer since I got it. And yet

everytime I turn it on, I get this message. I'm so

irritated now that everytime I turn on the computer and

it starts to run scandisk, I press the escape key and

get out of there.

Does anyone have any idea why I'm getting this message

everytime and what could be wrong? Should I clean up my

files by erasing everything and starting over again? My

computer is an IBM laptop and when I went to call them

for advice, they will charge $35 for any advice. And I

have no idea what those " bad clusters " mean.

Any advice or help would be much appreciated!!!! I hate

getting online now as it is such a hassle everytime to

get this annoying screen and then have to go through the

wait to get to the sign on screen.

HELP!!!

It sounds like your hard drive is going bad. It will still last awhile, but

the bad clusters will continue to appear in more places on your hard drive.

Eventually you will have to replace it.

Right now, there is nothing you can do to avoid the scan disk. Every time

it comes up, just exit the scan drive. Let it do the scan disk about once a

month. Otherwise, you can exit out of there and go right into windows.

Patty,

How do I replace a hard drive? Is it difficult? How

long are hard drives supposed to last? I thought they

lasted for the life of the computer. But then I know

nothing about computers!!!

Could the bad clusters also mean that there is a virus

on my hard drive?

One other question. I read somewhere that you should

update your browser at least once a yr. How do you do

this and what is the browser????? My computer is not

even a yr old and it seems like I've had more problems

with it than I should.....

Thanks for the info.
