The CDC recommends getting the pneumonia vaccine (PPSV it's called) if you're

over 65, or if you're between 2 and 65 with underlying conditions, which

includes HIV, regardless of your CD4 count. So yes, you should get it, if you

haven't had it within the last 5 years.

You can get it at the same time as you get the H1N1 killed vaccine shot.

Here's the CDC link about it:

http://cdc.gov/H1N1FLU/guidance/ppsv_h1n1.htm

and

you are correct, since pneumococcal pneumonia seems to be one of the bad things

that can happen with H1N1 infection, we all (HIV+ people) should be up to date

on the PPSV vaccine too.

Kaiser should provide it for you, I'm not sure if there is a charge.

the H1N1 is free, but there may be charges for just administering the shot,

depending on where you go.

Also: here is the latest CDC recommended immunization schedule in general, fyi:

I just got the Pneumonia vaccine a month ago, and had zip side effects (but remember we are all genetically different, so you may have a different reaction). It is about the third or fourth, every five yrs or so, last was 2003.

I believe (some googling will confirm or modify) that this vaccine is for bacterial pneumonia, and PCP is viral, against which nothing except decent health and med adherence will protect.

Hi. Does anyone have any experience getting the Pneumonia vaccine? Sideeffects? My tcells are at 220 and I need to work in FL all winter far awayfrom my primary health care provider. I was considering asking my doctor ifI could get the vaccine as my T4s are low and it looks like pneumoniacomplications are the major causes of death for both major types of flu thisseason. Does it cost anything? I am with Kaiser Oregon. Many thanks. >>

Has anyone vaccinated their kids with the pneumonia vaccine? It's not required

and it wasn't suggested to me by a doctor. But when I asked our pediatrician

about it she said it " couldn't hurt " since is on a biologic and

methotrexate, and a small amount of prednisone. Would appreciate knowing if

others have chosen to have their JIA kids get this vaccine. Thanks much.

Andy got it when he was 3. He's now 12. We were just at the pediatrician

yesterday and she said the shot is usually good for a lifetime, but with

immune compromised people or those with lung problems, it is suggested that

they get it again 5 years later. Needless to say, Andy got his second one

yesterday.

I forgot to add that also has asthma, so maybe that's why they push it

more...because it's a double whammy for him.

?We did it. I am glad we did she stayed healthy. I also received it and it

hurt like all shots do but I say it is a good thing but only those that are

at risk should get it. Terri B
