Guest guest
Hi Jane http://forum.expatica.com/lofiversion/index.php/t55314.html a comment from a poster:- [[...What the rather sad folk at Granada TV want is to find people who've 'failed', because failure is what brings in the viewers. TV audiences, by their very nature are indolent, inadequate and unimaginative, so it makes sense for TV companies to pump out 'lifestyle' programs where those who dare, and fail, can be ridiculed by couch-potato viewers. It makes them feel good, so they continue to watch Son of No Going Back, a new New Life in Sun, etc, etc, and the TV companies continue to get advertising revenue...]] My own opinion is that many programmes are targetted at the 'Schadenfreude' market; far too many to be healthy. It might be worth exercising caution and enquiring what is the precise purpose of the 'write-in'. Limiting the use to which your own personal details may be put. They may, perhaps, be targetting Daily Mail readers for purposes that you don't understand? best wishes Bob > > hi dawn ; the link is Vicki.Keogh@... it may be if > it doesn't go straight into your web browser you could try to copy it > there. good luck ! jane >

Guest guest
Raising awareness http://www.sourcenewspapers.com/stories/062109/loc_story1001.shtml June 21, 2009 Vicki Nicholls was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis when she was 18 months old although she had it since birth. Nicholls said that growing up, she was unaware of the severity of her disease - and wasn't even sure that her parents or her doctors understood the long-lasting and debilitating affects of JRA, an auto-immune disorder that affects approximately 300,000 children in the United States. Nicholls, a son High School graduate and Ray Township resident, said that when she was first diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis not much was known about the disease. " I had no idea what this disease was going to do to me, " she said. Nicholls said one of the challenges of fighting Rheumatoid Arthritis as a child and into early adulthood was the myth that only the elderly get arthritis. According to the Arthritis Foundation 66 percent of the more than 40 million cases of arthritis in the United States are people under the age of 65 years old. Nicholls said that growing up she hid her disease because people didn't believe that a child could have arthritis. " I really hid my disease for my most of my life, I don't even think I told the people at work until I had to get my hips replaced because I was just so embarrassed by it, " she said. " It is tough because there hasn't been the knowledge out there of this disease. " Rheumatoid Arthritis currently affects more than 2 million adults in the United States. " Basically my body attacks itself, " she said. " My immune system thinks that my body is foreign cells and it tries to kill them, and it does. That is why the joints break apart and why they break down. " As RA advances through both children and adults it creates a variety of problems. Nicholls, a certified public account, was forced to go on disability in 2004 because of RA. " Stress is real big factor with my disease and the more stress you are under, the body attacks itself, " she said. " Just the everyday grind of going to work was making my disease worse. " Nicholls said that she couldn't get through the day-to-day pain caused by RA without her husband, Mike. " He has been my rock. " Rheumatoid Arthritis, as an auto-immune disorder, often leads to secondary diseases like fibromyalgia, colitis and osteoporosis. " It wreaks havoc on your whole body, not just your joints, " said Nicholls. " It affects your muscles and your organs and the longer you have it the worse it gets. It is a progressive disease. " Currently there is no cure for RA but there are treatments which can slow down the progression of RA but not stop it entirely. Nicholls said that recent changes in Medicare have made it harder for people with RA to obtain treatment. " Medication that just a couple years ago I could have gotten for $75 a month is $435 a month, and that is just one medicine, " she said, adding that there have also been changes in the way she pays for physical therapy making it more costly. Currently the United States Congress is examining the Arthritis Prevention, Control and Cure Act which would strengthen arthritis public health initiatives, expand evidence-based self-management activities, ensure that federal funding for arthritis is used in the most strategic manner and finally to authorize a remedy to address a growing shortage of pediatric rheumatologists. Nicholls has dedicated a great deal of her life over the last couple of years fighting to raise awareness of arthritis. " It is really tough because there is not the knowledge out there of this disease and how many kids it affects, " Nicholls said. The Arthritis Foundation Michigan Chapter provides services to residents battling all types of arthritis. Arthritis Answers is an information and referral service which Michigan residents with questions about arthritis can reach by calling (800) 968-3030 Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. or by visiting www.arthritis.org
