Hi Sherry,

Well I am glad your appt. went well and the doc was able to see the problem on

the MRI. That always helps us not feel crazy. LOL. I have had five knee

surgeries on one leg and have done my share of PT. Have I ever been able to

avoid surgery with PT? Umm, that would be a NO. However, I always go into it

with the thought that I am going to do my very best and if that doesn't work,

well, then we go to surgery. I have never had a surgeon decide to do surgery

without PT first, except when it was an emergency. So, it is pretty normal for

them to exhaust the PT option before they take you to the O.R. We can't have a

bunch of knife-happy surgeons out there afterall. I hope you get some relief

from the PT visits. If nothing else, you may develop a good relationship with

the therapist that you can see after the eventual surgery. I keep the same PT

because she knows me, my work ethic, my disease and my joints. My day to day

relationship with her as I recover from

surgery is just as important to me as the doc who spends a couple hours inside

my joint.

So, look at this as a chance to avoid surgery. Do your best and we will all

hope for good results!

Hey Sherry, one of my best friends has had a horrible problem with his

right knee for years. He investigated surgery, but everyone he had spoken to

told him to avoid it at all costs unless there was absolutely no other

alternative as they all wish they had never had their knees operated on. He

has to go to a physical therapist 1-2x per year and that has been getting

him by for close to 15 years now.

One of my customers had surgery on both of his knees (he was a mason) and

fully regrets it as he used to be able to work, albeit in pain...and now he

can no longer perform his job and has a hell of a time getting disability.

This is just what I personally have seen and I'm sure there are others

out there who have either seen or experienced differing results, but I

thought I'd reply.

Good Luck, Kirk.

I've always associated PT as those secretly employed under Olga's House of Pain

but then I'm probably not the best judge on that front. After my first hip

replacement, my PT was more focused on my knees than what actually I'd had

surgery on. Because of her lack of hearing I was more confined to my chair than

I should've been at that point. But then I've never had an actual positive

experience with PT besides the little after post-surgery. Though I'm not saying

it might not work, well maybe I am kinda saying that but there's always hope. I

could be wrong about PT, I mean it could happen. And if it doesn't work I hope

that your surgery goes very well. ; )

: )

I'm gonna smile and not get worried.

I try but it shows. - 'Pain'

knee update

Hello friends.....believe it or not I am now 7 weeks post op and things have

gotten better but I feel there is still a long way to go. I am still in

outpatient therapy and what a pain that can be and I mean literally. Trying to

make something work that has not worked in 34-35 years is not without problems

and pains. I have been released to drive, yippeeee and I can walk unaided, but I

do keep the cane close for stability as the knee is still quite weak. I am still

having some sort of discomfort daily that can range from very mild to OMG pain!

My range of motion is improving and at the docs appointment Thursday he was very

pleased with my 96 degree flexion and 8 extension. I need to work on losing the

penguin walk but hey its been my way for all my life so.....I may, I may not.

Overall I am improving and still wish for a pain free day but I know in time it

will be here...

smiles!

Donna
