Well ,

To add muscle mass to your legs you must do some type of resistance

training, even short walks are good.

Bicycling is a wonderful way to increase muscle mass in your thighs. It

focuses on your quadriceps and to a lesser extent your gluteals and

hamstrings. Increased muscle mass in your upper legs will help to support

your lower legs and your whole body in general. A stationary bike will

acomplish the same thing although the scenery is not as good. You can also

do leg raises by sitting in a hard back chair and lifting your legs, bending

them at the knee. Start in a seated position and then extend your legs so

they are sticking straight out infront of you. If you have access to a gym

there are many machines that will help you with this. Now I will mention the

S word. It is never too late to learn to swim. Swimming is the best possible

excercise for our bodies. No impact and it works the muscles and the heart

and lungs all at the same time. Two yers ago we took my girlfriends mother

Delores with us waterskiing for 5 days. At first she refused to even jump in

the water with a life jacket. After a whole day of sitting in the boat with

the temperature at about 114 degrees, (Central California in August) she

agreed to float. She had never learned to swim. I teased her a great deal

but also encouraged her to start swimmimg. In fact I told Delores that if

she learned to swim I would learn to square dance. We all had a good laugh

over it. Well a year went by and we took our annual trip to Nacimiento, once

again Delores tagged along. As we headed out for a morning of waterskiing I

edged the boat out of the harbor, as we prepared for our first skier I was

amazed to see Delores dive into the lake without a lifejacket and begin

swimming. Delores had gone to the YWCA and learned to swim at 54 years of

age. Now we can not keep her out of the water. As promised I accompanied her

for 4 weeks to square dancing class, and hated every minute of it. Such is

life. Sorry to get so long winded but tis a true story.

Good luck,

BC

because he walks so fast; and I am not comfortable to walk alone. Any

exercises I can do? Give me you opinion. Oh, and don't suggest swimming

even though I live on a lake....I don't swim!

Hello Bill,

I thought I would ask you the following question(s) since you are " into "

exercise. I am able to walk, but feel unstable to some degree. I do not wear

AFO's or orthotics. I know I need to strengthen my upper thighs. What are some

ways to do that. I cannot walk with my husband in the neighborhood because he

Give me you opinion. Oh, and don't suggest swimming even though I live on a

Thanks for your input, and others are welcome to respond as well.
