Guest guest
Tongue in cheek, I'd say the post that started this whole debate.... -----Original Message----- From: Maxwell [mailto:rmax@...] Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2001 3:20 PM Subject: [] Positive Veruse Negative & Reality Question, what defines a negative post? When a person is having pain or finds they cannot do a certain thing that 2 months ago they could do etc. and they come here and state that and ask a questiion of others, those responding who have been there done that, respond to help that person. To let them know they know how they feel, which helps that person, is this negative? If a person writes about the use of a wheelchair or scooter, is that negative? Or reality, it happens to some, so its reality. If a person writes that his Dr. said he/she or their child will be in a wheelchair and another writes thats not so won't ever happen, and others respond never say never, is that negative or reality? Staying in a positive frame of mind is great. Not aways possible. Mind over matter is great. However reality sets in sometimes and no matter how positive a person is mind over matter staying positive doesn't make a person walk if there is a disease or condition that is going to prevent them from walking. CMT is a disease of the body, not our minds, altho a good frame of mind, staying positive helps, it does not cure CMT . Staying as active as one can, staying as positive as one can does help. I have noticed that some (only a few) of the milder cases of CMT just don't get it when it comes to the more severe cases of CMT. They think that if they (more severe) post of their CMT and post responses of their problems with CMT its deemed negative or stressful or distressing. Why? Its what we deal with, its reality. So why is it negative? Stressful/distressing to some, yes, but its reality. Now for my being positive, heres a tidbit, my Dr. said he was surprised that I am still walking with my braces, he thought I would be in a wheel chair by now, he asked how did I do it? My answer, shere determination to not let CMT put me down. As I stated in another post, walk a mile in my braces, deal with what I do 24/7, then call me negative, stressful distressful, LOL, or walk a mile in anothers shoes and then pass judgement, until you've been there done that, you may find that that person is very upbeat very positve under the conditions that they have to deal with So what defines a negative post? ~>Becky M. Guest guest
Becky and all Lamar here, Just want to say that I fully agree with what you have said. Mild or " severe " , to know we are not alone in the world is a BIG part. Methods that work for others may also help us. I had a poster in my office at work. " Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is mystery, TODAY is all that is certain---Make the best of it!! " MY telephone answering machine does not say " Have a nice day " it says " CREATE a good day " . We can not make all problems disappear, but we can ALWAYS do something to improve things. After all, every human starts dying the day they are born. Each day is one less remaining. We all know this but we do not dwell on it. The wise person is aware death will come. They make preparations in some ways to prepare both themselves and their family. Personal faith, savings, wills, insurance, even selecting a burial plot is often a part of preparation. It is not depressing, there is comfort in knowing that when the day comes you have eased the burden on others. Many do not look at all possibilities. For instance many make wills, but few wills include what is to happen to the children IF something happened to both mother and father at once. It's too frightening to even think of and they push it aside. Yet, every day, children are left without parents due to unexpected accidents. Not all of us will eventually require wheelchairs. Some will. Yet, amongst those without CMT some may eventually need a wheelchair. I often wonder when I see young adults (without CMT) buying their dream home. Many choose plans with all bedrooms upstairs. Yet, if they look they will see that most people as they age have trouble with steps. To be aware of the possibility can often make life easier down the road. I will use an illustration I used in my HIV classes about condoms. It can be applied to many things in life. Answer the following questions: 1. Do you drive or ride in a car? 2. Do you plan on having a flat tire? 3. Do you have a spare tire and a jack or a means of getting assistance? Being prepared for the worst is not being pessimistic. Preparing to cope should it happen is being optimistic. I loved to climb mountains. I can no longer climb regular mountains, yet CMT has given me another mountain to climb. The peak is out there. Sometimes I loose sight of it. At other times I get a glimpse of it. But I KNOW it is there and I will keep stumbling along until I get there. I may fall a few times and I will take the wrong pathway at times, but it won't stop me. I will share something that has helped pull me through many depressed days. It is a song by Bolton (yes some men like him too) on the album Soul Provider-- " When I'm Back on My Feet Again. " That song combined with R. 's " I Believe I Can Fly " . have picked me up many times. If you are not familiar with them I recommend them. (And that's from a country music fan!!!) " Do you consider it a tragedy that rose bushes have thorns, or a miracle that thorn bushes have roses? " " Do you consider it a tragedy that life has CMT or a miracle that CMT has life? " Now I will get off my soapbox. Just remember that we make our own negatives and positives. It is not the cards that are dealt but the way they are played that determines the winner. ----- Original Message ----- From: Maxwell Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2001 03:19 PM Subject: [] Positive Veruse Negative & Reality Question, what defines a negative post? Guest guest
Amen Lamar! I remember when I first learned I had CMT, I was absolutely terrified. The neurologist scared me to death. I will never forget his presentation of CMT. I then found this group and everyone was so kind and answered my questions. I did not necessarily agree with some of the answers or advise, but I took it all in. I can see how some postings might be depressing to some. Perhaps they deal with CMT in a different manner from others. I choose to be a realist, and prefer to gather all of the information I can. To each his own. ----- Original Message ----- From: " Lamar son " <lls@...> < > Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2001 1:27 PM Subject: Re: [] Positive Veruse Negative & Reality > Becky and all > Lamar here, > > Just want to say that I fully agree with what you have said.
