Subject: [] How Many CMTers in the World?

Does anyone know or have you ever seen a 'number' estimated for the

number of people with CMT in the World?

Yes I have read assumed numbers, but don't recall them, but will see if I can

find it again. ~>Becky M.

Gretchen,

Lamar here,

I have read numbers ranging from 1 in 4000 to 1 in 2500 people with 1 out

of 2500 being the figure most commonly seen. Today's estimated world

population according to http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/ipc/popclockw is

6,165,177,452 which would give at least 1,541,294 to 2,466,070 with CMT.

There are approximately 131,571,719 people born every year which means

approximately 33,000 to 52,600 births with CMT. The net population gain

(counting births - deaths) is 76,570,430 (2001 estimate) meaning that this

year will see an increase in the number of cases of CMT of approximately

19,142 to 30,628 increase in the total number of cases per year. It would

probably be safe to say that there are about 2 million people with CMT in

the world, that about 42,000 are born annually with CMT, and that the total

number of people with CMT is increasing by about 25,000 a year. Of course

this is utilizing the figures that have been calculated by others which I

quoted.

Gretchen,

Lamar again

Utilizing the median between 1 in 4000 and 1 in 2500 and therefore the

number of 42,000 births annually, that means that a child is born with CMT

approximately every 12 minutes.
