Does anybody use Amityiptyline for pain control/insomnia? It has been

prescribed for my daughter (15yrs, JRA) and I am concerned about the

listed side effects. Thank you!

I have chronic pelvic pain and my GYN mentioned Amityiptyline for the

pain about 18 months ago. I passed because I was already on another

anti depressant and I didn't want to add another medication to my

growing list.

Fast forward to about 6 months later when I started getting migraines.

I've had daily headaches for as long as I can remember but I never saw

anyone for them. My primary Dr. sent me to a neurologist and he started

me on Amityiptyline for the migraines and chronic headaches. I've been

on it for about 10 months now and I noticed right away that my

headaches were going away. I've had 1 or 2 migraines since I started

but I noticed my pelvic pain is nothing compared to what it used to be.

The only side effect I noticed was dry mouth. It does make me really

tired so I take it about 15-20 minutes before I go to bed and I usually

sleep through the night. It's been a wonder drug for me. I'm able to do

things with the kids that I couldn't do a year ago because of my pain.

If I had known that it would work on my pelvic pain so well I would

have started it when my GYN mentioned it 18 months ago. Good Luck!

,

has taken this before. Not for the JA but for the Psuedo Tumor Celebri. It did not help her at all but it is also given to those for Pain Management. My Father in law when he had the Shingles it is also called Elavil. It seemed to help him. Sleeping you will do on this drug until your body get's use to it.

Neurotin is also a drug to help with Pain Management now. It used to be used for Seizure patient's. Both Hubby and has taken this with it not helping neither one of them. stopped trying the drugs and is managing on her own right now. Hubby though takes Lyrica and it seems to be working great. No side effects either. ummm So far lololol.

My Aunt has Migraines and she said she takes Imitrex with a Excederin and that seems to help hers. For me well I keep Aspirin handy and when I feel a Migraine coming I take 4 at one time then if it's not eased up in 30 minutes to a hour I take 1 more. Normally this works for me. But I do not recommend it to anyone without talking to your Dr.

It's common to use these meds for helping with sleep, pain, and more. I think the idea is that many things like pain interacts with neurotransmitters like seretonin even though amitriptyline (elavil) is less specific, they often seem to help increase relief or help in some way. A common 'side effect' is sedation... which is why they are often used to help someone with insomnia.

It's also one of the first line medications prescribed for people with Fibromyalgia to help sleep, hopefully increase pain relief and in some cases, have a positive effect on mood if there is a problem with that.

I was on Elavil for a long time years ago. At first, the main side effect for me was dry mouth. However, for some reason, I had major issues with it over time. I was on a low dose but I started having olfactory hallcinations of rubbing alcohol! And than I started having symptoms of social anxiety like I didn't want anyone to sit next to me, near me, etc. I realized Elavil was the reason and when I got off of it, all of this went away. My pediatric rheumy at the time, didn't really believe it! So she kept suggesting it. Than she got another person who had problems with it however she blamed their symptoms on knowing me! She thought they had side effects from it because I told them what happend to me. One day, she quit asking me about taking it again and I asked the nurse about this because it was a huge change. Well she had ANOTHER patient who didnt know myself or the other girl who had side effects similar to mine sooooo yeh.... it can cause some strange effects for some people but a lot seem to have a positive response to it.
