Guest guest
I'm sure each state program rules vary. I'm wondering if anyone has kids that qualify for SSI payments for diabilities for any of the arthritis labels. My daughter qualifies because of Autism issues here in Penn and because of that she qualifies for the medical assistance. I am not sure if I would get it for the arthritis w/o the Autism too. And I would imagine there is a limit for income in order to qualify. I have two other kids that do not qualify for the medical assistance from the state... but do get CHIP. Not sure if that is all states or just Penn. Maybe try that. I know I didn't help much but I'm trying lol. sonia1md <sonia1md@...> wrote: Well, I got the call today from our insurance broker that all of our family was approved for health insurance except for Aundrea. I find it so ironic that we have struggled forever to get a concrete diagnosis for Aundrea but apparently all of the suggested diagnosis have trailed her medical records and now I am left wondering how I will ever get her any coverage. Guest guest
, I would try to go with what Liz said. Using either Juvenile Arthritis or the JIA. Just to see what is said. Make sure you have the Denial Letter in hand when you go to the State to apply for State Insurance. This will back up what you are in Need of as Insurance. has been turned down as well and it just errkkkkkkks me as Insurance is suppose to be there to help. I asked the lady yesterday how this could be she was like I am not sure but you do not qualify I told her that if they could not produce an explanation to me then it must be fraud of descrimanation. She was like ummm I am not sure (at this time I had sat in a chair for 2 hours going through our life history for her to say sorry contact disability). I was getting grumpy. I finally stood up and asked ok so what if this was you and your child and he needs PT and insurance wont pay for it we can not afford it we have already racked up 800 in PT bills what would you do just does not seem fair now does it. Guest guest
Concerning state programs. There are state programs for medicaid that will take the child and count them as a single unit household for the purposes of getting them medical coverage. For some reason the medicaid officers do not tell you this either because they aren't trained to do it, or they just aren't told its available until someone ask about it. YOU usually have to ask and when they say they don't know what you are talking about you ask again, and when they still don't know what your talking about ask to speak with a supervisor, and then go above them if they don't know. Its there, to my knowledge all states have it, but you have to research it and push for it yourself. Good luck. Alesha 10 systemic nurse0300 <nurse0300@...> wrote: This really hits home for us. Guest guest
Hi - I am so sorry.... this is so incredibly frustrating! My aunt has just been dealing with this as well... she had Cobra and it was ending. She was shopping around and was denied coverage because she has asthma and because she has had sinus infections / surgery. I was flabbergasted! What is it that only the perfectly healthy can get insurance?!!!! Anyway, I was doing a little searching and I came across this site: http://covertheuninsured.org/ There are individual state guidelines within the site, and it looks like there are some good resources as well. LIz's idea was also great and I hope that somewhere, the answer comes to you. As if the illness itself were not enough to deal with!! Guest guest
Cynde, I learned about the Insurance issues from my Sister. lololol. Plus has had Insurance problems and my Husband with Insurance issues. It is also good to get Life Insurance Young as well. When you have no health issues. Once you have a Health Issue the Life Insurance payments go sky high. But if you end up with a Health problem you are covered no matter what. Robbin **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Guest guest
Thank you all for your comments. It is hard to believe that I am dealing with a 12 year old girl who is being turned down arbitrarily for health insurance due to a " rheumatoid condition " . I am currently reading through all of the links that you guys have provided me with. There has been some very good information. Unfortunately, I realize my greatest mistake was having a " lapse " in coverage. I sent off my application to the state to see if there would be any support there. I know we wont qualify for the state programs due to income constraints so the only option would be to go through Medicare and you have to first go through SSI for disability. I really don't think Aundea would stand a chance in getting that service. When she is flaring and missing 6 weeks of school we might have hope for coverage but when she is in remission and running around looking great, I think it will be impossible. Not to mention the fact that we haven't been taking her to the doctor since last summer in regards to her " rheumatoid issues " . I have a call into the group plan with my employer. We are going to try one more time to try and get things going through them. If you have any other suggestions please let me know. At this point I am willing to try about anything. Guest guest
Can your insurance broker try underwritting her " rheumatoid " condition for a year and then the insurer accept her? Kind of like they would cover her in general, but for anything pertaining to the JRA they wouldn't cover-for the first year. I know that's probably the bulk of her expense, but at least she'd be covered for other things? I don't think you would have an issue getting her in on a group plan though either. Guest guest
Well, I just got some good news. I spoke with the insurance guy through our employer. Since my husband has just become eligble to receive insurance through our company and because it's a group plan, they have to accept Aundrea. He said that they could put a prexisting clause on her for a year but that would only be if she had been treated by a doctor in the last 6 months for arthritis, which she hasn't! :-) So, they are sending me a packet and we will see what happends next. I sure do what to encourage any other parents that have children with a long-term diagnosis to make sure you don't allow a lapse in your coverage. Believe me, I know that can be easier said than done. However after reading through some of the links that have been sent it appears there are programs for people who have lost their jobs etc...The greatest challenge is if your income bracket is to high and if you have had more then 60 days of being uninsured. I think I will see about adding some of the links that were provided into our files section in case it might be of benefit to other list members. Guest guest
, My daughter Maggie has Medicaid but it is based only on her income, which is zero because she is 10. She is on something that the state of Iowa provides which is called the Ill and Handicapped Waiver. We at first applied for SSI when she was much younger, my husband works for UPS and has for 21 years so obviously she does not qualify for a monthly check, but our health insurance does not cover all of her expences either. She does also have OI and CP and this is why she was accepted at first, but I think the waiver is for any condition that is life changing. I would think JRA would qualify. This also allows her to have respite care. What this does for me is amazing. She has a Respite care provider (who we hand picked, she is a social worker, school counseler, friend). She takes her to movies, to get her nails done and out for dinner, or she just sits with her when she is having a bad time so that I can go get groceries or whatever. As much as I love my little girl, I need a break sometimes and so does she. We both look much better to each other when either one of us comes back home. The Medicaid is Secondary to our Aetna insurance, but it still helps in big ways to cover some of those things that are not covered by Aetna. They also allow 5,000.00 a year for home modifications or vehicle modifications. This is how we paid for the wheelchair lift to be put in our van so that she could use her power chair. Like I said she does have other health issues, it does not cover everything(we still have astronomical medical bills) She spent 9 months in one year in two hospitals, but it sure would be better then having to pay the full amount ourselves. I am so sorry that you or anyone else has to deal with these issues. Having a child with a chronic illness is enough stress all by itself! We fought for three years to get this for Maggie, her doctor's were a huge help. Check into waiver programs in your state and see if there is anything there. I don't even know how we would begin to pay for meds if she did not have insurance!! But the waiver waves the parents income, relies only on the child! Guest guest
I didn't think that was legal..I am so sorry! I will watch and see what happens with her! hugs,Cynde Denied health insurance coverage Well, I got the call today from our insurance broker that all of our family was approved for health insurance except for Aundrea. We signed up for a HSA account through united health care with Golden Rule. I called to find out why they denied Aundrea and she told me that the underwriters automatically deny anyone that has a diagnosis of rheumatoid. I told her that aundrea wasn't even currently on any meds and that doctors have all given different opinions. I find it so ironic that we have struggled forever to get a concrete diagnosis for Aundrea but apparently all of the suggested diagnosis have trailed her medical records and now I am left wondering how I will ever get her any coverage. If anyone has ideas, please share them with me. I contacted our state program today to see if maybe I could just get her the medical coverage through them. I don't think we will meet the income limits. (Aundrea 12 systemic jra/gerd) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ No virus found in this incoming message. Guest guest
Hugs ...poor you! Sorry to hear of your difficulty! Hang in there! Cynde Re: Denied health insurance coverage This really hits home for us. We do have insurance coverage for Caleb but when he was in the hospital everything that was dont there and his room rates etc was not covered. We have a bill for 26,000 yes 26,000 this is our responsibility that they are not going to cover we went to the state yesterday to try to get a medical card for Caleb only they said well we cant help you until you have applied for diability and if we do help you you will have a 4000 spend down. Sure we all have 4000 in our back pockets with the way the economy is right now amd gas price ugh., It really makes me angry that I KNOW of a couple that work the same as my husband and I make the same amt of money and have the same household size and they get WIC and healthy start as well as a medical card for the family just does not seem fair. That I have worked all of my life mind you I have MS I could be sitting at home on my butt working the system as other do but no I am a productive citizen I pay taxes and when we need the help its not there for us to get. So we came home feeling like a pair of worn out shoes that no one wants. I called social security and we have an appt on march 20th. THat is our rant and story! > > Well, I got the call today from our insurance broker that all of our > family was approved for health insurance except for Aundrea. > > We signed up for a HSA account through united health care with Golden > Rule. > > I called to find out why they denied Aundrea and she told me that the > underwriters automatically deny anyone that has a diagnosis of > rheumatoid. Guest guest
that is so scary! How can these insurance companys do this????????? It has to be against the law!!!!!!!!!!!! cynde Re: Denied health insurance coverage Hi - I am so sorry.... this is so incredibly frustrating! Best hopes to you- Colleen (mom to Caitlin, 9, systemic) sonia1md <sonia1md@...> wrote: Well, I got the call today from our insurance broker that all of our family was approved for health insurance except for Aundrea. Guest guest
Is there anything thru her school? My dd qualified for help through a special program thru her elementary school. Just a thought.. cynde Re: Denied health insurance coverage Thank you all for your comments. Guest guest
: I hope everything works out for Drea. She deserves coverage and it angers me that they would deny coverage to a child! Please keep us posted. Could you put unspecified arthritis instead of JRA since you like us have been given different answers from different doctors. Not all arthritis is rheumatoid and that way they maybe would not deny her? Just a thought. Beth & Hannah, 11, unspecified arthritis; asthma; gerd; migraines Sending prayers & happy thoughts, Beth :-) Re: Denied health insurance coverage Thank you all for your comments. Guest guest
, We too went for one month without insurance thinking we were saving money. Unfortunately my husband was diagnosed with Diabetes.....and my daughter had chronic ear infections. So, really it cost us in the long run. It is a lesson learned, but don't ever go without insurances, especially now your daughter. Unfortunately our kids will always be in that criteria now. A chronic disease does not leave their records quickly. Guest guest
Thanks Robbin for clariying this..it should be illegal! I have probable ms at age 56 and heart disease and oa and other stuff. I am glad my husband has such a stable job and will work for many more years because of health insurance. It is such a insecure feeling knowing I would not be insurable with any change in our life! Cynde Re: Denied health insurance coverage Cynde, It is not against the Law as Insurance Companies have the right to put a clause in any Policy. BUT if they accept you it is a good chance you will be ok. Just that 1 or 2 year waiting period. That's where they get us. Robbin **************Ideas to please picky eaters.
