Guest guest
In the past 3 months she has been to the doctor for 2 thumb infections with heavy dose antibiotics, a trip to the ER, a splint; a lump full of gunk behind her ear that the doc cut out; a finger infection; a huge cut on her finger and now this one. She called yesterday said it was hot and red on her leg. I told her to call the clinic and see if they would order something over the phone. They called today and said they want to see her because this doc hasn't see her with an infection (just changed docs) so she had an appt for 5 tonight. I came home when she got in from university and she showed it to me. This was not a typical cellulitis for her but a huge circle with purple core, elevated, red bullseye hot inflamed. So glad she had an appt or I would have taken her to the ER. Her regular doc wasn't there but this one was good, kind, funny. He looked at it and said we need to cut that out. So they numbed her with spray and cut it open. It was disgusting--tons of ooze came out (I won't describe it further because it would make you sick). He was shocked at how much came out. There was a ton of it and he kept milking it out to make sure it all came out. He cultured it and said he expected it to come back MRSA so he put her on Clindamycin four times a day. She has a huge hole but he decided not to pack it to allow the ooze to flow. She has to hot pack it and let it ooze several times a day. Like I said, it was quite nasty! EWW!!! I am just so frustrated on how to prevent these. She has a sore on her finger that won't heal either. I am going to call her rheumy tomorrow to let her know what happened and to check about taking her MTX this week. She takes Prednisone, MTX and the big gun Remicaide. I just wish we could find a way to stop this from happening. This one is beyond gross. Any suggestions? e, mom to joe 20 poly/lupus (aka rheupus) --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Guest guest
Poor Joe that sounds just awful and pretty gross too. Have they considered just keeping her on preventitive antibiotics since her immune system is so weakened by the drugs and the disease itself. Hopefully the rheumy will have some ideas! She is in my thoughts. Guest guest
, I emailed e about this issue as has been through a lot of skin infections and still has them. was put on Antibotic Therapy and it did Great. But the Dr had her on 2 Antibotics so she could switch and the body did not get immune to the Therapy. Still today she get's the infections but we know now how to treat it. MRSA is nothing to play around with. There's more to JA than Joint issues. It can affect the whole body. Hope this Dr will shed some light on this issue for Jo and e. Guest guest
I have no idea but wanted to suggest something that will seem entirely too symplistic. So forgive me if you have already thought of this in other words! I give Isabelle Probiotics every day to counteract all the times she has had to be on anti-biotics. Much of our body's immune system is within our intestines, and of course MTX suppresses the ability to fight the numerous bacterial infections we are normally able to fend off. I realize it's not a cure for what you are dealing with, but I figured I should mention it since " it can't hurt " . I give Isabelle a half teaspoon of Children's Probiotic powder in her morning juice. She also has Kefir or yogurt daily. I know it sounds too simple but I swear it helps maintain some degree of immunity to bacteria and viruses. I'm in no way against antibiotics to do their magic, but just wanted to mention that probiotics are an easy " home remedy " in addition to treatment. -Hadley (Isabelle, 3 yrs.) > > In the past 3 months she has been to the doctor for 2 thumb infections with heavy dose antibiotics, a trip to the ER, a splint; a lump full of gunk behind her ear that the doc cut out; a finger infection; a huge cut on her finger and now this one. Guest guest
I will second the probiotic idea. I have several kids that are prone to yeast problems and sometimes antibiotics start that off and start off some bad diarrhea and the probiotics help tremendously. It doesn't cure anything- just helps with the natural flora that should be there that gets wiped out by all these other drugs. Guest guest
e, My sister that has chrones disease just had the very same thing that you are talking about (even with sparing the details I know it's the same thing.) Hers was located under her arm. She had to continue with packing and changing the dressing til it cleared up. It was staf infection. Apparently, there must be a carrier of it within their family because they keep taking antibiotics and then someone else will get it and the cycle starts over. (This has gone on for a year and now the whole family has been on maint antibiotics and getting tested to see who the carrier is) My sister gets the worst of it probably due to her chrones disease and immune suppressing meds. Make sure Jo takes all of her antibiotics and that they really do some deep cleaning at the dorm. This stuff spreads so easily. Guest guest
No word on the cultures yet but from what I understand they take at least 24 hours to grow. She has to hold the MTX and if her Remicade were due they would hold that. She is due on the 28th for the next infusion. Bad part is that she is supposed to apply heat and milk the wound. It is hard as a rock and will not break down at all. I am going to call the clinic on Monday to see what they want us to do. I don't like the look of it and don't know what else to do. You can also see some core thing but it won't budge or breakdown. It is so painful to light touch, the area around it is red, the whole thing is hot and hard as a rock. Just talked to the clinic they want her in right away. So off we go to downtown Seattle again. Guest guest
e, Glad that you are headed into the clinic. It should have improved by now. She may need IV antibiotics of some sort. Also they are likely going to need to run other test since the cultures haven't confirmed the type of infection that they are dealing with. Let us know what you find out.
