I think if you want to feel immediate results the sublinguals are

better but over the long run the ones you take everyday are good, I

like the immediate feelings from the sublinguals but they are costly,

though worth it. Take at least 10mg a day and maybe even 15 or 20

Hi Caren, Welcome! I also had revision surgery July 07. It has been a wonderful gift. My original fusion was in 1981. I diagnosed myself (later confirmed by Dr. LaGrone in Amarillo, Tx) with flatback syndrome. I learned about it on the internet when I was looking for answers for my pain. I returned to work full time after surgery. I still lie down for 45 min to an hour after work to rest my back before getting up and cooking dinner. I'm now upright and the shooting pain down my left leg is gone. It's not an easy surgery, but I have no regrets. I was officially diagnosed in April 07 and had the surgery in July. I wanted to be better by the holidays. I returned to work in October. The only "complication" I had was that Dr. LaGrone discovered some osteoporosis during surgery and I had to wear a brace for 6 months. I was able to take it off to

shower daily. At least it wasn't the plaster cast for 9 months after my original surgery. My fusion looks good and I had my last checkup a few months ago. I can now swim and do light weights. How long is your fusion? Who diagnosed your flatback? Where was your original surgery? Are you in the US? What area? Thank you Melinda, Sharon and for the warm welcome. I had my

original surgery for scoliosis in 1965 at the Hospital for Special

Surgery in NY. I was pretty much one of the originals undergoing

the Harrington rod procedure. My original fusion is from T3-L4.

My doctor at the time was Dr. Doherty who was head of the

scoliosis unit. What was unusual about my scoliosis was that it

gave me pain as a child. Anyways, I started having pain down my leg

and numbess too around 15 years ago. I went to an orthopedist who

said that the pain was a result of the 2 unfused discs having to

carry the burden all those years and there was nothing that could be

done. So, I suffered. Then, last year I went back to Hospital for

Special Surgery and I was given epidurals and was referred to Dr.

Boachie-Adjei. He told me that all the people who had Harrington

rods from the 60's were now undergoing pain and had to have revision

surgery. Last week, I saw Dr. Errico at NYU-Joint Disease in NY and

was told the same thing. I will be seeing Dr. Scwab in early May

and will see Dr. Boachie-Adjei again at the end of May and will have

to make a decision at that time. I never thought I would have to go

through all this again!

Welcome to our site. We have something in common. I too, had my

original surgery at HSS with Dr. Doherty. Mine was in 1969 though.

I have been through revision (2yrs ago this month) and it was one of

the best things I have ever done. It is a long recouperation, but so

well worth it. Glad to have you here!

Hi Caren, I did not have my original correction and fusion at HSS. I had my first fusion in 1962 at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY by Dr. Edmond Uhry. Dr. Uhry used Dr. Cobb (the Cobb who developed the Cobb Scoliometer) as consult. I had my thoracic spine fused, but I had no instrumentation at that time. It was before they were using Harrington rods, etc. I maintained a certain element of correction for awhile, but noticed around 1976 that my body was shifting, and it continued to get worse. As I said, in 1983 I went to see Dr. Doherty because the rib hump that I had was very painful due to the fact that it had become increasingly pronounced. He did a rib resection, but at that time told me that there wasn't anything else they could do as it would be too risky to try to operate on a spine that was fused such as mine. For a period of about eight years starting in 1990, I was

having increasingly more pain in my lumbar spine, and I was really starting to think that I would end up totally crippled by the pain and the continuuing curvature above and below the fusion. I didn't think that there was anything that they could do to correct my problem, but I was hoping for some palliative treatment when I made an appointment with Dr. Boachie. I knew that Dr. Doherty had left HSS, and Dr. Levine had retired, so I went online and found out who was the head of the Scoliosis Dept. at HSS. That was Dr. Boachie, and I am so terribly grateful for the day that I met him, and grateful for what he was able to do for me. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't remember him in my prayers and thank God for giving him the talent and expertise that he has. I guess this is more than you wanted to know, but this is my story. Again, I wish you all the best in your pursuit of finding the right surgeon and

right treatment for your particular case. ckoslov <ckoslov@...> wrote: Thank you so much . Did you have your original surgery at HSS? Caren - I had revision of my Harrington rod surgery in 1983 at Spine Center in Minneapolis (then the Twin Cities Scoliosis Clinic). But it was in its early stages; hence the need for revision #2 last year. Kathy W.

Hi Pat,I would think that revision surgery wasn't around in 1983 when you went to see Dr. Doherty. When I went to Dr. Errico last week, he told me that now is a good time to go thru with revision surgery because they now have the operation down pat. I'm therefore assuming that it's relatively new.Caren> > > > Hi everyone,> > > > I'm new on the list and was recently diagnosed as> > > having flat back > > > syndrome> > > > after having scoliosis surgery with harrington> > > rods 42 years ago. > > > I've been> > > > living with terrible

Caren,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you having surgery with Drs.

Errico and Schwab? You may or may not remember, but I had my

revision at NYU with Dr. Errico just this past January and I would be

so happy to talk with you about my experience. Please contact me at

my address (dturovac@) and I will give you my phone numbers.

My surgery was very successful and I had a great experience (as good

as it can get) and am now at the 7 month post-op period and am for

the most part pain free and only taking an occasional Tylenol for

discomfort. You will be in excellent hands! Please contac me.
