Guest guest
Hello I find this interesting although I don't know if what I have to say i significant. Of course there are the spondyloarthropapies (Sp?) that can exhibit themselves in spine pain. Anyways, some things I can share is this... My arthritis started out with a lot of spine/back pain. It has always been a problem for me and my biggest complaint since I was around 4ish-5. I do have a mild curvature in my thorasic spine.. only 5-6 degrees I believe I was last told. I also have had sorta flat arches and while this is not ussualy painful, it has been for me. It's possible that this is why I have had so much concentration of spine pain. My doctors and latter pedi rheumy's just chalked it up to the JRA/FMS but still.. im 29 now and my spine is still the worse most persistant area of pain for me. Nothing seem's to relieve it and despite meeting so many others with JRA.... this doesn't seem to be a common primary issue. At least I haven't heard anyone talk about spine pain being their number 1 complaint besides those with AS. So not sure if this helps and have to see what others have to add but just thought i would add that I can relate ofr sure! One thing that they did try and help me with is mobilization to my spine as well as strenghtening the muscles in the stomach and other areas that support posture to try and decrease spine pain. Most chairs cause me pain including my wheelchair and the straighter the chair, the better but needs to be pressure relieving. Sleeping is a major issue with the spine as well. I know that it is my earlier and most persistant memory of pain and I found backpacks very frustrating over the years as well as playing the cello.... the positioning was hard on me with my spine as well. So i suggest bugging the doctors about it.. even with their.. it's 'extremely rare' in kids.. the point is your child says her back is hurting... something needs to be done.. rare or not! Okay... good fortune Issadora On 7/11/07, Sheryl <taylorsmomma@...> wrote: Hello all,I have been lurking, but not posting much. The kids and other issueskeep me rather busy!I do have a question. Does anyone have a child that has arthritis intheir spine? The reason I am asking is that my daughter (3) complains of her back hurting often. This has been going on for some time. Sheis uncomfortable in the car seat, will cry if she is slouching a bitfor some reason, and generally complains of her back hurting her. At her last rheumy appointment, I asked about it and was told that itwas very rare for kids to have arthritis in their backs. Yet this isone of her only common complaints, leading me to believe that itreally is an issue. I am already concerned because her right knee is bothering her again and we just had a steroid injection in that kneein March. She is taking Naproxen and I just hate to think we need tomove her to Methotrexate, but she just seems to be getting worse, rather than better. We do plan to talk to our new chiropractor about her and her issues, and maybe that will shed some light on things, but do I need to pushthis issue with the rheumy? Any insight? Guest guest
Hi there complains of backpain all the time, we took her to a chiropractor and he helped reesolve some of her pain issues but we stopped after she was diagnosed with Arthritis. Ed our Chiropractor was wonderful and spotted the arthritis long before the doctors did. I havent taken her back yet as she is recieving treatment from Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy so i felt that one may contradict the other. If your child is complaining then the doctors HAVE to listen, you are her only means of a voice. s arthritis is in her neck, spine, hips, knees, arms, hands, feet and ankles and she has fluid pockets on her ribcage and shoulder blades. this i have been told is unusual but for its becoming her normal. If she is complaining then its real huni..... i am mid debate with one of s Paed Rhumeys.... he wants her to continue with her methotrexate by mouth but she vomits for 2 days afterwards with it. I want her changed to injections which although worse because of the needle would stop her being physically ill for 2 days afterwards as it would bypass her tummy. Being a mum with one of our special children isnt easy BUT we are blessed to be given the chance to look after them and help them grow up Blessings and who is now 11 Enthesitis Related Arthritis HLA B27 positive or Spondy as its know outside of the UK. Guest guest
Hi, I am new to posting but my daughters primary complaint for the past year has been lower back pain. She currently takes MTX injections weekly (in addition to sulfasalazine, celebrex, folic acid, prevacid and muscle relaxers as needed for her back) I was told that the MTX does not work well in the back. (The Methotrexate has been great for her knees, hands, elbows and hips) She just recently had another MRI and the problems is in her sacroiliac joint (SI joint) w/inflammation. I think we will be going on Enbrel here shortly....Maybe it is uncommon in someone as young as your daughter I don't know, but no one ever questioned a when she complained or told us that it was rare. Is it her upper back or lower back??? a's rib often goes out causing upper back/shoulder blade pain..that is easily put back in place by her physical therapist and her pelvis is often out which causes more lower back pain again we love the therapist and she straightens it out. I have never offered anyone advice let alone talked about my problems, so I hope this helps a bit. (a 13 poly JRA) > > Hello all, > > I have been lurking, but not posting much. Guest guest
Arthritis in the spine/back is possible. My son complained of pain in his lower back and hips, which actually turned out to be the tendons of his pelvic rim. They were inflamed and that is when the diagnosis of spondylitis was made. It was originally pauci jra, but as often happens over time, the dr will find different areas of inflammation and a more definitive diagnosis can be made. It is possible that your daughter is complaining of her back hurting and on examination the rheumy may find a related area of inflammation.
