Guest guest
, Do you not have a 504 plan in place for Elaney? That will help much better then the IEP. We have our IEP meetings each year because of her 504 plan. I know that each district is different but last year Jaye missed over 40 days in less then 3 months when we were first getting her diagnosed and dealing with her issues. Of course they did not even try to argue that she was having problems since her foot was about three times its normal size, she could hardly walk most days and when she was at school no one could keep her awake. Fortunate for us we already had the 504 in place because of her seizure disorder. But when she had missed so much school I went in and talked to the principal before they even realized how many days she had missed. I think it also helped that she was able to keep up with most of her work in her four core classes and so since her grades were good that did not raise a flag either. I hope things go well for you. Guest guest
Liz, Your so right. Even talking to the AF they can give info to the School about JRA and how it affects a child and school. I took many Pamplets with me and word for word showed them. I had been Documenting each Dr Visit before I ended up in that situation. A Parent can be charged with Educational Neglect if a child is out more than the State required Absents. Even though the School claims they are ok with it. They have to answer to someone above them. But as long as you document each visit to a Medical person you will be covered. was out 40 days even though I gave them Copies each time and even wrote a note. It got lost or something on their part but I had the Originals in my Files. So when it was time for that meeting. They called out a date and I had where was. Even when she did half days. The Principal did comment that I had all my Chickens in a row. lolol. He said he was sorry about their record keeping. I even had what Medicine she was on at each time as well. Some Schools are ok but some can be a Pain in the back side. This is why I always say Document everything. Get a Sick paper from the dr everytime. You never know when you may need it. Also. Get a Calendar and mark each time a Dr visit or Therapist or a ER was done. If you didn't see a Dr then mark on it That the child was sick with pain in the hip, Etc or throwing up. As long as you have something on the dates. See I always done this as well. Each time was out there was a reason why. So they can't do much but use this as Documented well info. Guest guest
We had the meeting today and it was quite different from years past. The principle, one teacher, and IEP coordinator was there. The nurse was not invited. I found out that after missing 15 days of school you must (by state law) be turned into the truent officer. Elaney has missed 15 1/2 days. She has not been officially turned in yet. I now must produce a letter from a doctor saying that Elaney misses days due to many doctor appointments. After that I think I will have to prove she is sick with a dr's note. They want all this in her file so that if they get audited then their butts are covered. I asked that it be put in her IEP that she will miss many days but I guess it doesn't matter to the truent officer. Just one more thing to deal with.--- & Elaney(12 poly)
Guest guest
: I wonder if that varies from state to state. Hannah missed over 30 days of school last year (90% due to her asthma) and there was never a problem. This was even before the 504 was in place (that did not happen until just last month). I think it stinks that you have a IEP and then still have to worry about attendance. You would think and IEP would eliminated the minimum attendance rule. Can her various doctors write letters to the school district explaining her medical needs, or would that not help? We are thinking of you... P.S. I found the cutest vet set for Hannah for Christmas, the dog makes realistic sounds and will whimper when its " sick " . Sending prayers & happy thoughts, Beth :-) Elaney's IEP meeting We had the meeting today and it was quite different from years past. The principle, one teacher, and IEP coordinator was there. Guest guest
Wow, 15 days sounds strict. My son's school district is seventeen days and I thought that was hard. My daughter is not in school yet, but has health concerns, and we will be setting up her IEP in a few months to get her into the school district next year. She will turn three in July. I feel for you. I never thought about the health issues and attendance issues. It's something I'm sure I'll have to deal with in the future though. Especially when I consider her hospitalizations and times I've cancelled therapy appts. My thoughts are with you. Guest guest
, Please note that you can, by law, invite people to attend IEP meetings, including your school nurse or another member of the medical team. Advice I was once given is to find out how many people the school will have at the meeting and then have that many plus one on your side of the table! When you speak to Elaney's doc, ask if he (or someone from the team) would be willing to attend the next meeting either in person or via telephone. That might be a huge help when it comes to the attendance issues. Guest guest
I had to deal with that.. it was SUCH a pain. I felt underminded.... that they didn't understand but once they got the picture.. me getting pneumonia, etc.... they finally left it alone. Put it in my IEP but didnt like push the issue.... good fortune On 12/18/06, rebpick1artist <rebpick1artist@...> wrote: > > We had the meeting today and it was quite different from years past. > The principle, one teacher, and IEP coordinator was there.
