Guest guest
: With the exception of the thyroid issue, Lexi sounds like Hannah. Through all the testing she has been through thus far they did find that she does not have a good immune system. We are now working with a immunologist for Hannah. This might be something you want to ask about. We have learned that Hannah's body rejected some, but not all of her childhood immunizations. She has since had to receive some booster shots...we have labs next week to see how she responded to those. They currently have her diagnosed with Selective Immunity. She too gets sick quickly and stays sick longer than the average healthy kid. They may also be able to help you with the signs & symptoms to watch for. As you know a lot of our kids on this list have immune issues so it would be worth checking into. redfeather03@... wrote: Hello all - just wanted to put this question out there to this knowledgeable group! Lexi went to the doctor last Friday for a routine well child physical and her kindergarten shots, only to find out the she once AGAIN had strep throat (in June it was vaginal strep) with no fever, no pain, and no other symptoms. We would've NEVER known except that the doc looked in her throat to see HUGE tonsils that obscured her uvula, and the tonsils had giant white patches on them! The rapid strep came back positive in record time even! Then, I asked the doctor ( a new pediatrician for us since July 1) again about Lexi's ongoing lack of appetite and complete lack of interest in eating as well as insomnia, and although her old ped 2x passed it off as behavioral since she really has no documented weight LOSS, this doc felt like we could at least do some other bloodwork to check some things since the loss of appetite had gone on for about 8 months or so now. Well, this morning the doc called to tell me that her thyroid tests came back abnormal - she has hypothyroidism. I guess your TSH (or maybe it FSH) is supposed to be between 0.5-7.5 and Lexi's was 19!!!! I can't understand why my seemingly " typical " looking kiddo seems to draw the short straw on everything by continually getting ill with no other signs and now another autoimmune disorder to add to her list! Anyone have any other experience with JRA kiddos at this age with thyroid disorders too - or anyone else know how to keep on top of knowing when their child is seriously ill when they have no symptoms! I worry because w/ starting kindergarten now, I don't know how to tell the nurse when to call me for illness. The normal symptoms don't ever show up in Lexi and you don't know she's sick until she's REALLY sick and I don't want to wait until a 104 fever before the nurse calls!!! ARgh!! Thanks! Guest guest
Dear , I don't have any concrete answers for you at all, but I want you to know I empathize with your frustration! I, myself have hypothyroidism, and in hindsight, I think I probably had it for several years before something seemingly " snapped " in my body and I went to see my family doctor, knowing that something vague was definitely wrong. After talking to a lot of people, I find that thyroid issues are like that---so many vague symptoms that could be shrugged off as stress issues, and for adults, aging issues, etc. Once Lexi gets regulated on thyroid medicine, I think you'll find that she'll feel so much better on so very many different levels! Don't you wish there were some sort of computer reading that you could get every so often---a printout of anything abnormal in your child's body?! Sounds like you have a great new pediatrician! Guest guest
-, I am sorry Lexi now has a another issue to deal with. it's good though, that you found it now and can start treating it. Its only 1 small pill a day. Can Lexi swollow pills?? I am hypo too, When mine was discovered my TSH was 179!!!!! by that point my thyriod was swollen so big I thought I had a HUGE tumor in my neck. Just make sure you keep getting regular checks on her levels, once in awhile doses might need to be adjusted. Guest guest
Hi , I also have hypothryoid. I was diagnosed with it over 12 years ago. My mom and grandpa also have it and I do believe there is an increase in genetic links to it. My symptoms were dry skin, fatigue, " fuzzy " thinking, and difficulty loosing weight. Just like Helen, I also take one small pill a day. I get my lab work checked every year just to make sure that my dose is correct. Sorry, that Lexi has another thing to deal with and I hope that she starts feeling better quickly! Guest guest
-, They dont actually make a pill in the strength I need so I need to take 2 pills. What suxs is that its two separate RX's so they charge me 2 co-pays for it. Its not a lot, but its a pet peeve of mine. I already pay for way too many rx's Hugs Helen and (9,systemic) -- In , " sonia1md " <sonia1md@...> wrote: > > Hi , > > I also have hypothryoid. Guest guest
How did you get your pediatrician to refer Hannah to an immunologist? Guest guest
Actually our rheumatologist referred her. But when I mentioned it to the ped he was all for it too. I think when they saw how abnormal some of her labs were neither one hesitated. Has Lexi had had recent lab work? One of the ones that the rheumy checked that was a huge red flag was the HISS panel. This is the one that will tell you how your child responded to immunizations. There were others that were concerning, but I honestly don't remember speicifically which ones they were, that seems so long ago. Rember that JRA is an autoimmune disease so I can't imagine that you would have trouble with this referral. redfeather03@... wrote: How did you get your pediatrician to refer Hannah to an immunologist? Guest guest
Thyroid Disease has a tendency to follow jra and ra. It is also considered an autoimmune disease (yuck!) I have both. Started with jra and thyroiditis at age 13. The thyroid finally quit all together at 25 went hyper then hypo after treatment. Thyroid disease can also cause althralgia. Guest guest
Yuck! It just seems like once you have an autoimmune disorder so much other stuff follows! Thank you for everyone's responses - Lexi will start the medication this evening (scheduling when to take it around meals and school is tricky too!!!) and we'll see how it goes. The doctor just also called me this morning and after checking with an endocrinologist, they are concerned for some reason about her adrenal glands too. They want me to bring her in tomorrow morning to have more blood work taken to check the adrenal gland function - so I'm not sure what that means exactly now too. Ugh!!!
