Guest guest
If you would, please. Maybe I can figure something to do with it. Regards Re: Questionnaire Sorry, I haven't been online much lately as I've been feeling worse than my usual " not so good " . BP and pulse have been up slightly and I feel absolutely exhausted. Nothing has changed as far a diet and meds, so I don't have a clue as to what is going on. Electrolytes and other blood work is OK. I had to cut down to 2 days per week at work and I am barely making it through the day when I do work. Enough complaining though, I'm still here ;-) Dr. Grim, I can take the questionnaire from the study we did, make a template out of it in Word format and upload it to the site. People could download it to their own computer, fill in their own personal info and upload it back to the group site. Would that work? a
Guest guest
The DASH improves glucose control so carbs should not be a problem. But simplest way to document this in yourself is to DASH rigidly (14 day trial in the book) and see what happens to glucose, cholest, BP and peeing at night. I am going to upload a 24 hr voiding diary to help folks evaluate their problem and think we should ask all with suspected PA to do one. No one has ever done this before and would be another contribution we can make to the literature. Basically what we need is an hourly diary that lists fluid intake (cups say) time of voiding, measured amount (cups say) and any other problems such as incontinence, or not feeling urge to void. Some get quite a spike in BP when their bladder gets full and they need to go. So those with spiking BP might try to measeure BP before and after peeing. Clarence E. Guest guest
Not DASHing but will try it. What is the name of the book that you suggested? I have tried many of the online DASH recipes but felt no difference. I don't cook with salt, use herbs for seasoning, and have cooked like this for over a decade. Didn't think DASH was different from what I am already doing but I will take a second look and try it again. I have low HDL with normal LDL. Any further suggestions? (What are good fats to add to my diet? I've been told that only exercise and red wine can raise the low HDL). Guest guest
Olive oil and "good fats" - and even bad fats - with low carbs will raise good cholestorol and lower triglycerides. Guest guest
When you set calories for the weight you want with the DASH your weight will go to where you want it. The beauty of the DASH is that one did not have to lose weight to get the BP effect. Indeed the study adjusted calories often to keep weight constant so that a BP, cholesterol, glucose effect was not due to weight changes. Losing wt will help some folks BP even more. I have had patients lose 70 lbs on DASH, but big surpise they were eating lots of calories before the started DASHing. The reason DASH has " low protein " is that a normal human intake of protein was likely low for eons. There is also some old evidence that a high protein diet will damage the kidneys. The design of the DASH pulled together all the nutritional factors that had some data to suggest they might effect BP. No nutrition hocus-pocus. There is no doubt that weight loss occurs when metabolism increases. The best example is hyperthyroidism. The issue is how else can you increase metabolism. Best way is to exercise more. Clarence E. Guest guest
Maybe what we could have folks do is to enter a number in the same place they enter their " name " . So if I entered one today as Grimlin and had some data to update then enter new data with the name Grimlin 2 etc. Or better yet add date to the name using format yymmdd So Grimlin 090610 would be today and Grimlin 101225 would be Christmas '10. This way of using the date as a number has the advantage that is is an always increasing number and one can sort on that to put things in order. Clarence E. I would not use it just for heart protection unless it is needed to keep the BP down. The rate may go up esp for a month or so. But if you are tired I would talk to him about tapering off and seeing what happens. > > Lipitor - my cholesterol and lipids are always high, my LDL is high > and my HDL is low. Same for my Dad. You must have familial hyperlipidemia and may need to be on more than one drug. This is important to know as all other family members must be tested and Rx started early to prevent others to getting into the same problems you and others are having. You may need to see a real lipid specialist for this to get it under control.
