No.

No, I've always been told that my child will not be able to enroll in

schools/day

care if they are not vaccinated. I found out on my own that this is not true.

No, my doctor has *never* discussed adverse reactions to vaccinating with me.

I've always been told about the horrible outcomes of the disease itself.

> If NO, did the nurse?

Again, no. But I have been completely informed about the outcomes of catching

the disease naturally, and have been shown videos of babies dying horrible

painful

deaths from these diseases.

Each child is different, no pattern can fit them all. Vaccines should be

decided on

a case by case basis, and not prescribed for the general population. Parents

have

minds, and parents *always* want what is best for thier children. Treating

parents

as if they can't possibly understand the possible risks and benefits of a

vaccine

and scaring them into compliance isn't good medicine, nor is it ethical.

No, not voluntarily. He *did* quote " the benefits outweigh the risk "

Didn't know about India. Was already aware that the only people getting

polio here were those who got it from the vaccine.

Doctors are, from what I've seen the past ten years or so, only pushing

the vaccines, and not being very up front about possible reactions.

Carol,

A questionnaire sounds like a great idea. Maybe we

can give the medical society some views from the

people who live, breathe and SWALLOW this condition.

By the way, recently went to my OB/GYN and was told

that I can no longer have any more children due to the

thinning of my uterus. (I could die!). My uterus was

so thin that when he proceeded with the C-section, he

could see directly through the muscle to my infant.

Anyway, he suggested that there may be a link because

the uterus is also a muscle. It something I would

like to look into. Does anyone else have any other

similar problems.

Best regards to all,

Cheryl Cini

Cheryl brings up an interesting point, i.e., the need for US to provide the

medical community with some " real life " information about this disorder.

I've been struck by how little information seems to exist in the

professional literature about long-term management of achalasia. When I

ask my doctor about this, he says, " I don't know. " And I'm in an area with

pretty high-level access to medical care, so something tells me that there

just hasn't been much done in this subject yet.

Do any of us someone who is actually conducting current research in

long-term issues with achalasia? Someone affliated with the Cleveland

Clinic, maybe?

Just a few thoughts re: the Questionnaire and Vicki's question about

what the medical community is doing.

I'm scheduled for surgery in about 10 days. My doctor has been

treating Achalasia for at least 10 years. He's affilated with

Harvard Medical School. He made a comment about sitting around with

other Thoracic surgeons disscussing the merits of various treatment

methods for Achalasia just for the heck of it. So it seems he's had

quite a bit of experience and exposure to this disease.

I had been thinking I'd mention our group's interest and willingness

to offer up information for research and see if he knew anyone in the

medical community that would welcome our input or perhaps there is a

medical student that might take it on as a project - someone who's

more versed in proper research.

On a side note: If we do the questionnaire ourselves, some of my

thoughts were to break things out by age, and detail info within. ie:

Family History - others with the problem, other diseases they

suffered from and so on.

Infancy - diseases & treatments and severity of illness, medications,

general health, weight, where you live, pets, siblings, etc.

List the same for childhood - 2 to 11, teenage years and adulthood.

History of your own Achalasia symptoms and treatments.

Include info on eating habits, environmental contamination such as

airborne particles, chemicals, list any diet supplements, vitamins,

herbal supplements.

I think more importantly than asking " did you have " we should try to

get as much information as possible throughout the life stages, then

it needs to be compiled with an eye towards spotting similarities.

I'll let you know if my doctor responds enthusiastically to my

inquries about someone in the medical community taking on the project.

Jane,

Great idea! Count me in to help.

Best approach is to stick to basic factual stuff first - expanded

questionnaires following some thread of similar past histories can come

later. Firstly :

Age & at onset of achalasia

type of achalasia suffered (vigorous, non-vigourous etc)?

what treatment employed? When? Successful? For how long?

Would you recommend your specialist/surgoen/medical centre to others with

this disorder?

Do you suffer from other digestive problems? Prior to onset of achalasia,

or after?

Have you/ do you rely on antacids?

any unusual past medical history,( eg chronic problem requiring ttmt,

operations etc)?

any noticeable health problems immediately prior to first achalasia

symptoms?

Diet - meat eater/vegetarian/vegan?

Medications/ health supplements taken for extended periods ?

any past history swallowing probs/ throat cancer in family?

any past history ongoing dental problems?

facial/mouth herpes?

pets - (alsatians have achalasia as an inherited disorder)?

travelled o/seas prior to achalasia - where?

ever caught any parasites?

etc, etc

I'm sure others can think of many other pertinent q's-those were off the top

of my head.

But we could do with an interested medical party to collate all the answers

and look for commonalities.

I can help with that in an informal way if you like. Have done similar

health related social reseach at Uni years ago - bit rusty though. My being

in Sydney Australia might pose a problem when most of you are in the States

or UK.

By the way, I've never had a head injury, and still have a healthy gall

bladder I think. I eat meat, have had a successful myotomy with dor

fundoplication to prevent reflux which seems to work very well. I have had

mnor digestive probs dating back years - other than that nothing major to

report. Consider myself pretty lucky so far especially after reading some

of your stories. I think this egroup is a wonderful resource especially

since this is a relatively rare condition. Cheers everyone.

Hi Everyone--

I think Jeanne's idea of connecting an interested medical person to our

survey idea is a terrific one. That way, we can make sure we stay on the

beam AND our survey results are more likely to be put to good use.

Any of us know any likely researchers?

There's another possibility: we could contact the ISRDN about

questionnaires. They might already have something we could use or adapt.

Thanks Noel for the questionnaire, it certainly does make much more sense,

than relying on ELISA, Western Blots, CD4 counts and Viral Loads surrogate

markers.

Robin-

There was a show called McGyver, and the guy could make absolutely anything

out of normal everyday objects. He'd be very handy on a deserted island.

I'd need him to build a boat, hunting tools, a stove. . . whatever :-)

Sorry, I haven't been online much lately as I've been feeling worse than my usual "not so good". BP and pulse have been up slightly and I feel absolutely exhausted. Nothing has changed as far a diet and meds, so I don't have a clue as to what is going on. Electrolytes and other blood work is OK. I had to cut down to 2 days per week at work and I am barely making it through the day when I do work. Enough complaining though, I'm still here ;-)

Dr. Grim, I can take the questionnaire from the study we did, make a template out of it in Word format and upload it to the site. People could download it to their own computer, fill in their own personal info and upload it back to the group site. Would that work?

thanks a: I would prefer to just let them use the one you set up on the

net as it is much easier to analyze and we don't have to enter the data. How

long an we keep it at that site? I think the DB is limited to size.

Sorry to hear you are not feeling so well. Can you list the drugs you are on?

We can do that, as far as I know it stays on the site until I delete it. It's

still open at

http://www.kwiksurveys.com/online-survey.php?surveyID=HIJIO_f2685379 and it

looks like 32 people have now taken it. The drawbacks are it can't be updated

or changed once it's been completed plus the results don't go to the group to be

seen by all. I own a group at and got around the space issue by adding a

new group just to hold files and data. If we run short of space here just start

a new one and call it PA Library, or some such name.

Meds haven't changed in at least 2 years, probably longer.

Spiro 100 mg BID

Toprol XL 50 mg

Lipitor 20 mg

Omeprazole 20 mg

Plavix 75 mg

ASA 81 mg

MG 500 mg

I have to go now and try to stay awake to see the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup

- again. Go Wings!

I think we might be able to have a column that would have a date that the form

was completed. That way one could update their file and just use the new one to

replace the old one.

Put out a call for all who have not completed the survey who have been Dxed with

PA to complete it and then I will invite all new folks to enter data now and

then to update it as more data become available.

So we would need a column that has not only date but another that has time of

day. Or we could put both in same column using the format:

yymmddhhmm using 24 hr clock time. So if I did it now ( june 9, 2009 at 1005PM

or at 2205 I would enter 200906092205. This will be a constantly increasing

number.

The form can't be modified in any way once anyone has responded to it so I can't

add date. So it can't be updated, that's what I meant before. The only other

option that I can think of is what I said before. Upload a blank template to

the site for members to download and fill out on their computer then upload

their data back to the site. That could be modified, changed and added to

anytime they want to upload a new one.

I know Toprol makes you tired but since I've been on it for over 2 years I don't

think it's just now kicking in. My cardiologist wants me to stay on it since I

had LVH, he feels it's " heart protective " , or some such thing. I did try

weaning down to 25 mg about a year ago and my heart rate went above 100.

Lipitor - my cholesterol and lipids are always high, my LDL is high and my HDL

is low. Same for my Dad.

Plavix & ASA - I had two stents put in my legs almost 3 years ago. Yes, I was

very young for this. As the doctor said, " I do this on 80 year olds, not 55

year olds " . My mother and two of her sisters had carotid endarterectomies in

their 50's and my father had an MI and by-pass in his 50's. I have a great

family HX.

Omeprazole is generic prilosec. The Plavix gives me heartburn, I started taking

it when I started the Plavix.

If your LDL is high and the HDL is low, it may be time to add good fats to your diet and limit carbs.

I do a low carb diet with a K of 3.5 and I'm not a mess - uncomfortable at times to be sure - and I am sick and tired of peeing all night since it messes with my cortisol, which makes weight loss hard - however detra test and cotton chewing test showed normal cortisol - whic means no Cushings disease.

Is there a Carb Addicted version of DASH? If not, I can't do it, since I won't add diabetes to my list of symptoms if I can avoid it. The PA already has me be hypoglycemic and a diet where all the carb aren't in a reward meal won't help me.

Hopefully I have a mass in one gland so that I can go off meds and eat more normally.

Assuming I can ever save enough duckets to be off work for the surgery and recovery.
