Happy Friday!

Just wanted to send an update on Hannah. I received a call earlier in the

week from Hannah's orthopedic doctor. She re-ran several of the labs that the

rheumy ran back in April. Many of her labs came back normal! Her sed rate was

still elevated, but since she has a fractured femur this is not unexpected. We

are hoping that the increase in the Naproxex (she takes 500mg daily) is doing

the trick.

She will see the ortho doc again June 15 and they will remove the cast and

re-xray. We are hoping they will not have to put another cast on. She most

likely will also get scheduled for an MRI of the knee/leg. Her bone scan the

rheumy ordered is still on hold until the leg is completely healed.

Hannah will also see the immunologist for the first time on June 15. Which is

a good thing. We are hoping they will address not only her poor immune system,

but also her asthma. Hannah had an asthma attack this past Sunday and is back

on pred. again.

This girl needs to catch a break, she has been getting sick every couple of

weeks since December and has missed close to 25 days of school during this time.

I will update again after the appts on the 15th. I also attached a picture of

Hannah so you can put a face with the name.

Thanks for info on QVar, I will ask the imnunologist about it. Unfortately,

we are still playing the waiting game on a diagnosis for the JRA. The rheumy

won't decide until after the bone scan, which is on hold. The ortho though for

sure she has some sort of arthirtis due the the fact that Hannah fractured her

femur simply by standing up off the floor and having her knee give out and the

fact that she is only 9.

Beth - I read that Hannah has had problems with her asthma - has she been

diagnosed yet with JRA. Our pulmonologist had us try an inhaler called QVar

instead of oral steroids - it worked like a charm - Hunter was on it for three

weeks - she is doing great now. Just my little input. Sandi Ken Hunter

Hi Beth,

Sorry to hear that Hannah is still struggling. Must be uncomfortable for

her, still being in the cast. I hope her leg is healing alright. Please do

update us, after the appointments on the 15th. May I ask how much Prednisone

she is currently taking for her asthma?

Aloha,

Georgina

Hannah is currently on 40mg daily and will slowly start to wean on Monday.

The ped wanted her on enough pred to hopefully prevent another attack before

seeing the immunologist.

On a separeate note..I have a question. I have read much talk lately about

skin conditons related to JRA. I noticed today after Hannah was outside all day

that her hands are literally peeling. Its as though she is getting blisters

that are popping and then peeling. It was not overly hot here today (reached

low 70's and dew point was in the upper 40's) and I had her slathered in sun

screen. Should I be concerned? As you know she not been officially diagnosed

with anything yet.

Hi Beth,

It could be so many different things. Most unrelated to arthritis. Is it on

her palms or on top? Is there redness and swelling, too? Do the blisters

weep fluid? If you have a digital camera handy, try to get some good

pictures of the blisters and peeling skin, to keep on hand in case it goes

away before she sees a doctor. If this symptom persists, a dermatologist

preferably. (As you've undoubtedly noticed, our group settings don't

accommodate distribution of photos or other attachments - to safeguard

against virus and trojan sharing).

Sweating a lot on the hands (and feet) can cause little pustules that break

down and cause skin peeling. Eczema. Psoriasis. An allergic reaction-

perhaps to the sunblock? Extreme dry skin. Hand, foot and mouth disease.

Impetigo. Skin peeling can also happen to children who have Kawasaki's

Disease.

On another note, taking that level of Prednisone will often mask/alleviate

the inflammatory symptoms of arthritis. How quickly will she been weaned off

of it, this time around? Hopefully before she sees the ortho? How long has

Hannah had asthma and how frequently has she needed to use Prednisone to

treat it? Has she been taking calcium supplements? Josh used to take

Miacalcin, a nasal spray for those with osteopenia, to help rebuild bone

mass or at least slow further bone loss. I'm wondering if this might relate

to the fractured femur.

Aloha,

Georgina

Georgina:

Someone else suggested Hand, Foot & Mouth disease. Taking pictures is a great

idea. Assuming she does not get worse tomorrow, I will check with ped on

Monday. We work in the same building and he is extremely accessible.

In regards to the asthma, Hannah is 9 had her first asthma attack at not quite

8 weeks old. Up until this year, she would need pred maybe 1-2 times per year.

Unfortunately, she had a horrible winter and spent most of Feb & March needing

to be on pred (we live in Wisconsin and this winter was not good). She has one

more day on the 40mg and then on Monday will wean down to 20mg for 3 days, 15 mg

for 3 days and 10 for 3 days and then 5mg for 2 days. She should end her pred a

day or 2 before we see the ortho doc and the immunologist.
