Department of Rheumatology1 and Ophthalmology2. Hospital de Especialidades, Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI. Mexico City. Introduction: Uveitis, inflammation of the uveal tract of the eye including iris, ciliary body and choroid, accounts 19-56% of inflammatory systemic disease and 10% will have severe visual loss. Purpose: To describe clinic characteristic in consecutive patients with rheumatic disease and uveitis. Methods: Between june-august 2005 we selectioned patients, who have had diagnostic of uveitis, among 1321 consecutive patients with rheumatic disease (5 relapsing polychondritis, 11 Behcet disease, 93 seronegative spondyloarthropathies, 6 polyarteritis nodosa, 590 rheumatoid arthritis, 600 Systemic lupus erythematosus,16 Wegener's Granulomatosis) Date including age, sex, anatomic location of uveitis, patients with rheumatic disease beginning with uveitis, number of recurrences, season at presentation and ocular complications of uveitis. Analysis: descriptive. Results: There were 56 cases of uveitis in 1321 patients with rheumatic disease (4%), mean age was 47 years, 37 males, 18 females. The most common form of uveitis was anterior non-granulomatous (82%). All patients with relapsing polychondritis had uveitis. 41 (93%) cases were associated with spondyloarthropathies. Uveitis preceding diagnosis of rheumatic disease in 32 patients (57%), mean 10 years, range 1-27. 16 (22%) cases with complications were noted in 76 eyes with uveitis including: cataract, glaucoma, retinal detachment and synechiae. Three patients become blind. There were no cases of uveitis in systemic lupus erythematosus and Wegener's Granulomatosis. Rheumatic disease activity was not associated with recurrence of uveitis. Comments: Uveitis in rheumatic patients at Mexico City has higher frequency in male, with predominance of form non-granulomatous and it is commonly associated with relapsing polychondritis and spondyloarthropathies. Rheumatic disease was preceded frequently by uveitis with higher recurrence in winter.
Guest guest
" Rheumatic disease was preceded frequently by uveitis with higher recurrence in winter " Really? I never knew that! Guess it makes sense, since JIA is often triggered by a cold or flu, which are also more prevalent in the colder seasons.
