Guest guest
As the mother of 3 girls 21, 19 and 16, let me just jump right in here. I have been through all sorts of tattoos and piercings (NO TONGUES ON THREAT OF REMOVING ALL FINANCIAL SUPPORT!!!) lol. Abbie at almost 16 got her belly button pierced. It was allowed upon receiving permission from her rheumy. Because she is on mtx and remicaide, it had to be done when her immune system was at its highest. Dr. figured out when that was, and she did it then. No problems with infection, and it has been almost a year now. Guest guest
Patty, When I was 13 my lft ear had 3 piercings and my rt 2. got both his ears pierced right before he turned 6.He didn't have any problems with it.His older sister had hers done at the same time. She didn't have problems either but s holes are smaller and they seamed to have healed better. keeps saying he wants his toungue pierced. My little rebel..... It will only happen over my dead body or when he turns 18. Hugs Becki and 7 systemic
Guest guest
yes, tattoos and piercings. What is it with these kiddos? I guess my having double holes in each ear at 14 is todays equal of a tongue or belly or whatever being pierced or maybe even a tattoo. My 14 yr old wants me to allow a small tattoo or body piercing for his 15th birthday and I just cant find the " cool " mom yet. The uncool mom keeps saying his body belongs to me until he is 18. I guess we will see. he is even bribing me by saying he will put mom on his arm if I allow the tattoo! As for the infection stuff, I believe the risk to be about equal amongst those with and without JRA. Those with JRA however should take more precaution in my opinion....Donna
Guest guest
There have actually been studies done on this topic... I can't seem to find it now... But it stated that there is no increased risk of infection in someone that has Rheumatoid Arthritis. Some even believe the likelihood is lower, since persons with a diminished immune system know to take care of themselves better when it come to infection. And no, I have never had a Tat or a piercing, I am un-biased regarding this subject. Fischer DPA Architects, Inc. pfischer@... Guest guest
Can't help with the whole JRA thing as has not put any additional holes in his body nor has he gotten any tattoos, although at 18 he certainly could if he wanted which would of course drive me up the wall! But I have to laugh at your being the " uncool " mom - I too belong to that club! What a great place to be, huh? Guest guest
I have my ears pierced and I'm going Friday to get my cartlidge pierced. I didn't have any infections or any trouble. It was smooth. Just make sure you use the wash they give you to clean them. That helps out a lot. As for a tattoo, I never got one. I've been really wanting one though, but I'm not sure. <3 > > Hi Everyone: > > Caitlin is/has been bugging me to get a tattoo and/or additional piercings > (ear), can you BELIEVE IT, good grief! Guest guest
I heard of someone (maybe it was on this list?) requiring their child to do research about tattoo's and piercings. They had to check with the health department about reputable places to have them done, had to do research about the tattoo parlor and their methods of sterilization, and present quite a detailed report. Funny thing is, after the child went through all that they didn't want a tattoo any longer! Rob is interested in getting a tattoo, we've already talked about his immune system, and he has agreed to wait till he is 18. Which is only 15 months away! Yikes! and Rob 16 Spondy On Wed, 18 Jan 2006 12:31:39 -0600 " Tepper, Michele " <MTepper@...> writes: Can't help with the whole JRA thing as has not put any additional holes in his body nor has he gotten any tattoos, although at 18 he certainly could if he wanted which would of course drive me up the wall! Guest guest
Patty, When was 4 or 5 she asked me if she could get a tattoo. I told her when she was as big as I was, she could then decided if she still wanted one. That child went around telling anyone who would listen (she loves to talk) that she was going to get a tattoo when she had big boobs like her mom. Kids, gotta love 'em. I can't help from a JRA point of view but I do have several tattoos and my tongue pierced. I didn't have any issues with the tattoos except scabbing as they healed but hygiene is extremely important with the piercing. If I remember correctly, the waiver I signed when I had them done specifically asked if you have a compromised immune system. I have a friend who is diabetic (and lied on the waiver). He had major issues with healing or lack there of when he got a tattoo. As an adult (if 18 is really adult) I won't stop her as long as she's consulted with her doctor and is aware of the risks but untill then she's not going to be allowed to alter any part of her body. That goes for my other daughter as well. They both try to threaten me with the " I hate you " when I won't bend to their will. My answer is " I'm your mother, you don't have to like me " . Guest guest
Hi Patty While my daughter is too little to contemplate tattoos and she refuses to get her ears pierced, I do know of several young ladies who did get tattoos on their lower back. When one of them went to the hospital to have her first child she was told that she could not get an epidural due to complications with the tatoo pigment and the spinal fluid. Something to consider if she's planning on kids. Most of my staff have tattoos and multiple piercings. They are all terrific ladies but they do make me laugh with their thoughts. We had an older lady come in to do some courtordered community service. She had multiple sailor type tattoos on both arms and legs. My girls took one look at her and said " why'd she get those old grody tattoos? " I laughed and reminded them that when she got them (30 years ago) they were cool. Since then not a one has gotten anymore tattoos. Maybe your daughter should consider if the styles from 30 - 50 years ago would be cool on her now. If not then perhaps the tattoos and piercings are not for her. Guest guest
This is right up my ally!!! I had both my tongue and belly button pierced..I had to take them out when I had my surgery last christmas..but I didn't have too much of a problem. But having an immune system thing you have to be diligent with the cleaning. My friend got hers pierced at the same time and wasn't so diligent and kept getting infections and she is perfectly healthy.. so the piercing is actually smarter. My old rheumi Dr. Sanborge at Lucille Packard Childrens Hospital said that tattoos are usually a bad idea for autoimmune people of any kind because of the fact the immune system already attacks things it shouldnt and there is a risk on that. That being said I still plan on getting a tattoo someday and hoping for the best and I'll let you know how it goes.. But piercings tend to have less side effects!!
