THE Yorkshire Young Achiever of the Year award has been won by a Bridlington girl who has juvenile arthritis.

Ten-year-old Ellice Corner, of Harland Road, was diagnosed with the condition when she was 18 months old and was nominated for the award by her friend Carys Ward, 9.

On the application form Carys said: "Ellice is always laughing and she always brings the best out in other people. She never complains about her illness."

Ellice attended the ceremony in Leeds with her dad and joining them were a few familiar faces, including Nell Mc, boxer Clinton Woods and former Heartbeat star Kazia Pelka.

Mr Corner said: "She enjoyed the whole evening. She had had her hair done and looked like a young lady." Ellice had no idea she had been nominated for the award and found out about it only at the beginning of last month.Mr Corner said they received a phone call to say Ellice had been nominated and then a crew made a short film about her two weeks ago.

They attended the ceremony and Ellice was unaware she had won.

Ellice takes daily medication, has injections three times a month and regular physiotherapy on her hands and fingers, which are the worst affected joints.

Despite this, Ellice gets on with life and does not let the condition stop her doing the things she loves, like swimming and dancing. In June, Ellice decided she wanted to raise money for the Arthritis Research Campaign and she and her family took part in a sponsored walk.

Carys said: "Ellice isn't allowed to do certain activities, such as gymnastics, but she has found many other things that she is good at. "Ellice tries really hard and never gives up. "I think she really deserves this award."

The awards are now in their 13th year and all of the money raised from the evening goes to the children's charity NCH. McCormick, awards chairman and sponsor, said: "We believe it is important to recognise that there are young people in our region who achieve amazing things, often in the face of adversity, and these awards offer an opportunity to mark their successes publicly."
