Hello Arnold and group,

Ten years after my brain surgery for seizures failed, I brought my seizures

under control using diet, exercise, behavior modification, yoga, and

neurofeedback as well as vitamin, amino acid, and mineral supplements. Also

extremely helpful was learning relaxation and breathing techniques and going on

a gluten and lactose free diet.

I have been seizure free without drugs since July of 1998. There are many

options to explore for managing seizures and overcoming them with or without

medication. Had I understood more about nutrition and how the drugs could make

my condition worse, the seizures may have never gotten so severe that surgery

seemed to be the only hope. A lot of people are told this when there are many

options that may be safer.

Below are some links that are worth checking out for further information on

taking control of one's seizure disorder.

Warm Regards,

Hi JoAnn,

Congratulations on your success BUT, Every case is different and all

surgery--ESPECIALLY BRAIN SURGERY is RISKY.

As a reminder, one of the people who started this list, Zoe Langley was a

survivor of brain surgery that did not work--but then she was finally able to

control her epilepsy without drugs and has trained herself to be able to do

fantastic work in discovering little known medical research on epilepsy despite

a surgically complicating disability that compomised her overall health and

energy level.

Even the Brain Surgeons at NYU Medical Center were warning that not all cases

are even candidates for surgery, it is a very complicated picture.

I had brain surgery for epilepsy about 10 years ago, when I was 16, and haven't

had a seizure since. They took me off of medication about 8 years ago. I was

still able to get a bachelors degree and don't seem to have any side effects

from it. As a matter of fact when they took me off of medication my IQ went up.

Is it even an option for most epileptics or are most just to scared to try it?

Arnold

Dear ,

Thank you for your email your information helped me to learn more about this

condition from your first hand experience and research. AS I mentioned before I

am not medically trained but I am interested in the condition to help a member

of my family and to help other people. I also like to study natural medicine

informally. As I find information relevant to the things that you write I will

post them to the group to enable us to learn together from each other.

For what I had been reading on the internet many people with a seizure disorder

benefit from flax seed oil.

Some people are allergic to nuts but nuts are beneficial for my family in my

opinion in the same way flax seed oil might be beneficial for many peoply with

epilepsy but a trigger for some.

I had used lindseeds another mame for flax seeds crashed in the blender with

other seeds in moderation in our diet with not ill effect.(The seeds also

contain the oil in them) Also cataplex F have flax seeds if I remember rightly

as a source of omega 3 from vegetable source.

The website below says that flax seeds deplete the vitamin B6. This vitamin is

necessary to prevent seizures.

http://www.townsendletter.com/Oct2004/litreview1004.htm

From the above website, " One potential negative effect of consuming flaxseeds is

the development of vitamin B6 deficiency. Flaxseeds contain a substance called

linatine, which interferes with the utilization of vitamin B6. Pigs fed a diet

containing 30% by weight of flaxseed had impaired growth and laboratory evidence

of vitamin B6 deficiency. Although the effect of eating smaller amounts of

flaxseed on vitamin B6 status has not been investigated, it would be prudent for

people who habitually consume flaxseed to take a multivitamin that contains

vitamin B6. "

In the following website Lee said that the excess of some oils can trigger

seizures. It is my opinion that almost anything is excess is bad for our health.

I know that fish oil and flax seed oil is helpful for many people with epilepsy.

You need to make sure that the fish oil is not contaminated with traces of

mercury and that is additive free. It would be better to use a good naturopathic

doctor to recommend the right suplements and the right quality and quantities.

http://www.litalee.com/shopexd.asp?id=208

From the above website, " Excess unsaturated oils. This includes all liquid oils

except extra virgin olive oil. The list includes all seed, nut, bean, grain and

fish oils--soybean, safflower, sesame, corn, evening primrose, canola, flaxseed

and fish oils " .

Re: Calcium.

For some people milk and dairy products are triggers. This is not the case for

my relative. However the calcium that she takes as a suplement,as mentinioned in

my previous email is from vegetable sources not from milk.

You said, " As far as the calcium is concerned, I look at some of my bottles of

calcium and chelated minerals. They do have espartate or glutamate... .Wow, I

did not know about that. I did now about Espartame. I will pay attention to

that. the calcium that I have is super Cal-Mag by nature's life. I know that I

tried a couple of others and had the same reaction. "

I wonder if it is the source of calcium, the type of calcium or the addives that

caused you to have a seizure? As you mentioned above, some suplements contain

aspartame, MSG and traces of toxic metals that can be triggers?

Re: The hormones, Lee recommended only natural hormones (no syntetic ones)

She said that estrogen have to be balance by progesterone.

Re: Salt

Also I read in the internet that the lack of salt or too much salt can trigger

seizures.(From page 76 of the book Salt your Way to Heath by Dr Brownstein

M.D.) Dr Brownstein, who talk about seizures in this page, also said that the

brain relies on sodium and water to transmit nerve impulses and without

unrefined salt, water, magnesium, calcium and potassium and other mineral the

brain cannot function normally. He also recommends to ileminate refined salts

and adding unrefined salts like celtic sea salt with 80 trace minerals.

I also read that fresh coriander,(cilantro) helps to chelate some toxic metals

from our bodies. So we added a bit of fresh coriander in our diet.

http://hubpages.com/hub/cilantro-chelates

I also read that liver toxidity trigger seizures on some people I need to to

more research on this area.

I agree with your about the electromagnetic fields unfortunatelly with all the

cell phones towers, wireless techonology etc. it almost impossible to avoid

complete but we need to try to reduce our exposure as far as we can.

You will need to forgive any errors in my english. My first language is spanish.

Blessings,

DS.

Saludos Amiga:

Escribeme en español si tu quieres... my first language is spanish too!

I wanted to tell you that not all flax seed oils were good for me. There was

one that made me see floaters.

The one I take now is organic with lignans from Trader Joes. ingredients Cold

pressed unrefined flax seed oil, Organic milled flax seed, Organic Rosemary

extract, mixed tocopherols, ( non-hexane extracted natural vitamin E) bottled

in a facility that produces nut oils, I am doing this because Dr. Hirani ,which

tested me for a bunch of stuff, told me that all my omegas and neurotransmitters

were really low. Maybe the ones that clam the brain are not doing a sufficient

job.

Interesting that many people with seizure conditions don't show anything on MRI.

Because it is not a structural or damaged brain. It a chemical toxic and

imbalanced body that is doing it to many of us.

Funny some time before, I took fish oil, and it made me have what I call " brain

hick ups " . a Weird twitch of the brain.

It scared me half to death. However, now I am taking all these oils and it

really helps. I do take a multivitamin but

I am thinking about getting a really complete vitamin B. Also Arnold has a

really good list of foods that contain high levels of B vitamins. What calcium

of a plant source are you talking about?

By the way, I like to think of us as The Seekers " . We don't give up easily!

How old is the relative that you are trying to help? is it a boy or girl?

The best thing to do is to keep a journal. When there is seizure, write down

everything that they did that day and the day before. What you eat, drink, do,

exercise, time spend in front of tv. or computer, supplements or any other

activities that you can think of.

Look to see if you can find patterns. All this is going to do, is help them

identify triggers.

This will help them have a greater sense of control.

Saludos

Subject: Re: [ ] WARING; Re:Has anyone else had fantastic results

from neurosurgery or is it jus

This vitamin is

necessary to prevent seizures.

http://www.townsend letter.com/ Oct2004/litrevie w1004.htm

It would be better to use a good naturopathic

doctor to recommend the right suplements and the right quality and quantities.

http://www.litalee. com/shopexd. asp?id=208

I also read that fresh coriander,(cilantro ) helps to chelate some toxic metals

from our bodies. So we added a bit of fresh coriander in our diet.

http://hubpages. com/hub/cilantro -chelates

Blessings,

DS.

Querida ,

Si le escribo en castellano (español) nadie nos va a entender en el grupo. De

que país es usted?

I am going to write in ingles for the sake of the rest of the group also because

I only have an english keyboard in my computer and I have to copy the letter ñ

and the accents one by one because they do not exist in the english keyboard.

Therefore with the wrong keyboard it takes me longer to write in spanish than in

english.

You are write we are seekers, the internet in good for this purpose because we

can get in touch with people from the whole world to find answers. I am also a

christian and I believe that God created everything that we need to keep healthy

but in this modern society we have lost the knowledge and we are exposed to so

much contamination. If you read my previous email you will see that my relative

is a girl. However she did not have anymore seizures for one and half years now,

but she is still taking some suplements, keeping her natural low carbohydrates

and low grains diet (a type of ketogenic diet) and taking a homeopathic

medicine.

I will probably send your private email some of my previous emails to the group

if you have not receive them. Let me know if you need them. You are right many

people with epilepsy have a normal MRI Scan. I believe that many of these people

would benefit by using nutritional methods. My relative had a normal MRI scan

but the EEG showed a low threshold to seizures and she was diagnosed with

partial epilepsy on the right side of the brain in September 08.

You asked, " What calcium of a plant source are you talking about? "

I'd sent the information to you in a previous email I am re-sending it now.

I agree with you a good source or natural food vitamin B complex are also

important to prevent seizures in my opinion, among many other vitamins and

minerals that are also important.

, you mentioned " Rosemary extract " the rosemary essential oil can trigger

seizures in people with epilepsy so I worry about this herb and I do not use it

in my cooking or personal care products anymore althought I love the taste of

rosemary (romero in spanish). I really like the taste of most herbs with the

food anyway!!

Here are some websites that mention essential oils that people with epilepsy

should avoid.
