Guest guest
Pat, I have heard of the south beach diet, but other then the name I know nothing about it, sorry I can't help there. When you go sugar free are you allowed things like nutrisweet and splenda, or are they forbidden as well? It isn't something that I plan on trying because it is a whole coloney of sugar monkies I have on my back , but I " m here to support and listen and understand! a
Guest guest
Yes I use sugar substitutes. You can set differant limits for yourself--according to your bodies need. I try to eliminate as much white flour as possible but am not overly strict on it and I don't drink as much alcohol. (only had a beer once in a while anyway) These things turn into sugar in your body. A plate of pasta does set up a craving reaction for me. Peace pat
Guest guest
South Beach is fine, although most people find the 2-week low-carb induction a little extreme and unnecessary. It's probably more workable if you start in phase 2 or 3. Then the meal plan is actually pretty close to BFL, although the menus and suggested recipes are a whole lot more fussy. I certainly don't have time to make mahi mahi, spinach stuffed salmon, or arugula salad every night of the week. Give me a tub of cottage cheese and a bag of grapes already. :-) south beach diet My husband is considering the South Beach Diet. Has anyone tried this? Is it healthy? What are the pros and cons? I've been searching different websites and have only found one set of progress pictures. I'm a little skeptical. TIA, Tiffiny
Guest guest
Tiffiny, I haven't tried it, and I haven't read the whole book. (So what good am I right??) I have done some research into it and know several people who have done it, though. After the two week initial phase, I think it is a pretty good plan. It does have you add carbs back in and it focuses on the natural, non-processed carbs. My problem with it is that I think the first two weeks of cutting out all but the fiberous carbs is unnecessary. I think people would have great results just cutting out processed carbs from day 1. I don't think two weeks of restricting carbs is harmful, just unnecessary. South Beach does focus on lean meat and low saturated fat and it also has some really good recipes in the book. for what it's worth, Lynda
Guest guest
--- Also, Make sure you check the most recent version of the south beach diet. They've updated it recently and now certain foods are allowed in phase 1 (such as onions) that were restrictd in the past. It can be very similar to BFL depending on whatfoods you choose when doing BFL. I personally don't eat processed carbs and so the foods i eat are similar to the ones recommended in the SBD, but the way/time I eat them is following BFL In , " Eve C. She realy needs to be exercising, because I am sure she is losing muscle. Many of the foods are similar to BFL. In fact, when she eats over she just eats the same thing I eat. We eat a lot of the same foods. I think he would be better off to do BFL, but if he really wants to do South Beach diet, it seems pretty safe. He needs to make sure he exercises. My parents are sort of following the South Beach diet. The biggest changes thy have made is that they no longer eat potatoes, bread or bananas, and they eat lower fat meats and cook with less oil. I can usually eat the meals my mom makes now.
Guest guest
Kathy, I am almost 2 years out and for the last 12 weeks I have done the Body-for-Life program. I did this pre-op too (short-term success). Within 2 weeks I went down a size (from 8 to a 6). I am a firm believer in this program. You eat 6 mini-meals a day (200 - 350 cals each for me), each to include a protein and a complex carb and as many veggies as possible during the day. Exercise is weight training 3x per week and cardio (20 min) 3x per week. It is all outlined in the book. I feel fabulous being on this program! I ate on average 1800 cals per day. I had my bodyfat done at the beginning and every 4 weeks after that (at the gym - bioelectrical impedence). I gained 6 lbs of muscle, and lost 12 lbs of fat during this 12 weeks. I am ecstatic. On this plan you lose fat not muscle. In fact you gain muscle. I had a free day (eat anything) each week on Sunday (in fact it was usually a free weekend!). This actually helps you lose! I think the South Beach diet is good but please be sure to eat complex carbs, we need them for energy and fiber. Best of luck and God bless! Guest guest
HI Kathy, I think it's a great diet because it does have fruits and veggies as well as protein, especially after the two week period. (as opposed to Atkins) It wouldn't be so hard on the kidneys. Sometimes I think it does take a diet program to get us moving again. I'm stuck at my weight too, but it's been 8 1/2 months at this point. I find when I start to really watch I can lose a few more. By the way, did you fax that letter? I haven't received it , no problem. Just hope I didn't miss it. thanks alot. I will keep you posted and then if I get paid, we'll go after them for your husband. Guest guest
Hi Laurie, I " low-carb " and my WOE is more similar to the South Beach Diet than any other (second close would be Protein Power by the Eades). My husband and I eat very well - simply by eliminating the " bad " carbs and enjoying the good ones. We eat more fats than South Beach suggests (butter, half-and-half, cream, lots of red meats). What this equates to is: breakfast often includes steel-cut oatmeal, and always a bowl of fresh fruit we eat whole-grain breads lunch for me typically includes an apple or another fruit we do not eat processed sugar, nor do we eat any processed junk foods (chips, hamburger-helper type meals, french fries, etc.) - but we eat pizza a few times a year! supper for us is often a piece of grilled meat, a large salad, and a vegetable dish we eat sparingly the starchy foods, like white potatoes, bananas, etc. Both Harry and I are of normal weight, our BPs are low (below 120/80), our cholesterol readings are quite good (my HDL is close to 100!). South Beach has a cookbook, the title is (similar to - I don't have it here) " 30 Minute Recipes " - I love this cookbook, lots of really tasty recipes that are quick and easy. For example, I recently made the creamed asparagus soup - which turned out to be fabulous - took us perhaps 15 minutes to make (we added cream to it, our " change " ). The SBD suggests starting out with a 2-week induction - essentially eliminate most carbs - which brings your blood sugar under control and eliminates sugar cravings - then it steps up the carbs until you find your " level " .... Let me know how you do on it - I think it's pretty good! Bonnie L Delk <delk@...> wrote: Is anyone trying the South Beach Diet? It seems like a very healthy one - yet actually working too..... Guest guest
Hi Laurie, I have heard of the South Beach Diet, but have never tried it. I do know a woman who was on the South Beach diet and lost 50 lbs. in 6 months on it. She was very happy, but I thought that she had lost the weight much too fast, most especially since she looked so drawn and haggard to me after she had lost the weight. But then you, and all of us, have the added benefit of LL breathing, which this woman I am referring to didn't. So, you might do better on the South Beach Diet than she did, in fact, you most probably WOULD do better on it than she did, since the LL breathing itself causes weight loss, even if you are not on a specific " diet: " . Guest guest
Hi Laurie, I saw Bonnie's reply and wanted to let you know that this is basically the same way I eat now too. I started about 8 months ago because of a pre-diabetic condition. I have been monitored closely by a doctor and have lost 65 pounds so far with about 10 more to go. All of my blood work (cholesterol, glucose, triglycerides, etc.) and blood pressure (almost always at 118/68) has been great. I also exercise--including LL--every day. I think the induction phase that Bonnie mentioned is very important and would follow those guidelines very closely. I really believe it took me about 10 days to get all of the sugar out of my body and I did go through what I would call withdrawal and it was very difficult. However, now, I no longer crave sugar. I also eat more good fat (usually as nuts or seeds) and red meat (we buy organic at Whole Foods) than SB recommends. Good luck and let me know how it works out for you if you try it. Take care, Gaylynn L Delk <delk@...> wrote: Is anyone trying the South Beach Diet? It seems like a very healthy one - yet actually working too..... Guest guest
Hi Laurie Sounds like you are right on track!! Keep up the good work Blessings R South Beach Diet Thank you all for your responses! I have been studying different diets for over 2 years. I have NEVER had to watch what I ate, always lost it after kids, and looked great. Then I turned 36 (mind you not 35! lol) and I gained 45 lbs - before I even realized! I have been looking, studying, and asking around, seen my Dr, as well as my midwife, and my nutritionalist, and my health food store owner/friend. ) I have always been vegetarian, and I now how bad processed meats can be for you. Especially if you do not buy organic or from a farmer, being raised with all the added hormones and antibiotics. I do eat Morning Star Farms foods, and lots of nuts and whole grains too. And I have always ate well, and fed my kids well, but this just happened all of a sudden! ugh! Anyway, I watched a few people do the Atkins, and lost weight - but ended up in the hospital with kidney problems. Then I watched a few do the Lean for Life, which I thought was better, but yet the same thing happened. So then I watched the South Beach and it seemed better. Also the Dr in the book, he stated over and over - he could care less if people lost weight - he is a cardiologist, and just wanted people to get healthy hearts. BUT people ended up losing weight too! Well, a health heart and kidney is MORE important to me than losing weight as well. ) I have lost 14 lbs so far, and I have been doing it right at about one month - so that I am happy! Plus, I have to admit, I slowed on my breathing too for awhile, and I sang a special in church, and holding those notes - and reaching those soprano high notes - let me tell ya - the breathing helps! lol Plus I started walking with a friend after we take the kids to school, I still have 2 that I push in a stroller but it is a 2 1/2 mile around our park - so that I am sure will help too! Anyway - Thanks for everyone else's comments I really think these will work very well together! Funny how we Mom's can seem to let *life* get in the way - and forget to take care of US, when we take care of everyone else - but we HAVE to take care of US, or we will not be here to take care of everyone else! ) I send out REAL cards by 1st class postal mail for 70¢ Including the stamp! Guest guest
, Good luck with the south beach diet. That is one I never tried so I can't give you any advice but I wish you the best with it anyway. I hope it works out for you. Blessings, South Beach Diet Hi there friends, I went to the doctor today to find out about my blood tests. She wants me to go on the Lipator like my other doctor said. She is also starting me on some diabetic medicine. Then she said she wanted me to buy the book "South Beach Diet". She wants me to start on that as soon as possible. There is a phase one and two and three. I got the book this afternoon. She thinks it will not only help with me losing weight, but it will help with my diabetes. So I am going to give it a try A really really big try. First things first I got to read the book first. I have already read a little tiny bit of it. I sure hope I can do this. Has anyone else in here been on the South Beach diet or is on it now? Just curious. I could sure use some advice from those of you who are or have been on it. I have never had a particular diet like that told to me by a doctor to do. So I am going to do it. She wants me to make this my life style. So here it goes... from MO. Guest guest
My cardiologist recommended this diet. So there must be something to it if so many doctors are recommending it right? I tried it for about a month and lost about 20 pounds a think. Then I started to get bored with what I could eat and also feed to my family as I don't want to cook 2 different meals. I really do want to get started with it again but need some recipe suggestions. Most of the recipes in the book just are'nt things my family would eat. I think I will do a search on . thanks for the suggestion!
Guest guest
>Then she said she wanted me to buy the book " South Beach Diet " . She wants me to start on that as soon as possible. There is a phase one and two and three. Phase 1 is identical to Atkins, phase 2 is identical to Sugar Busters, and phase 3 is maintenance, IIRC. I don't remember if we have a specific folder in our Links or recipes for South Beach, but I know we have a few Sugar Buster links. Basically, it's what many of us have been saying here for a while - stay away form white bread, sugar and white rice and use whole grains instead. I'm not sure how they perform portion control, but on Sugar Busters you're to eat what fits on one plate without going up the sides.

Guest guest
Hello , I went to the dr. last Dec and my cholestrol was 247. They wanted me to take Lipator, I told him I refused. I never went and got the medicine. I went back to the dr in May and he recheck and it is down to 217 with diet. I have been dieting since last May and have lost 79lbs so far. I have about 60 more to go. Right now my weight is 194.5. It is hard work, and I want you to know that if you lose weight it will help bring down those numbers. I have been following a low-carb diet and it seems to be working for me. I want to wish you the besh on the South beach and let you know I am here to support you in any way I can. jackie <6@...> wrote: Hi there friends, I went to the doctor today to find out about my blood tests. She wants me to make this my life style. So here it goes... from MO. Jackie Wisocky http://jwisocky.avonrepresentative.com/ http://www.idealweightlossinc.com/cart/ How low will we go? Guest guest
Wow Jackie, 79 lbs since May? That is awesome! I started the SB diet today. I was not hungry at all. I cooked breakfast (which for me is a rare rare rare thing). Something I will probably have to get used to though. I just got back from walking around the track across the street. It took about 40 minutes. I was afraid I wasn't going to get my exercise in today, because today I have been so tired, but hubby suggested the walk. I am sure glad he did. from MO. Re: South Beach DietHello ,I went to the dr. last Dec and my cholestrol was 247. I want to wish you the besh on the South beach and let you know I am here to support you in any way I can.jackie
