Guest guest Posted October 25, 2005 Report Share Posted October 25, 2005 I luckily got a friend to help me with web design, someone in the business.. have a great website is a plus.ohter than that I sell @craft fairs.. a LOT.. so most of my business is local.. the thing about the internet is .. there are a LOT of places to shop.. tons.. all selling the same thing you have, i find the most success locally. I have sold a lot but only to friends and family and they are not even repeat customers. I give away more stuff and I don't think the people that I give the stuff is helping keep the word of mouth going for me. (not that they have to). I have had my web site up with products for about a year now and this month was the first time I had an order from someone I did not force to buy something ;-) And at the same time I can't stop buying stuff to make things, for the life of me I don't know what's wrong with me. Then I hear friend and family talk about how they order something from Avon or any other order and I say to them " why did you not mention my products since you always order from that girl on your job get her and the rest of them to order something from me. I mean at least mention it. " Also everyone that come to my house say ohoo let me try this or that and never want to buy. One more thing I'm so sick of hearing about bath and body works is makes me sick on the stomach I know sounds pissy doesnt it. I guess if I revert this energy maybe I'll make some sales. I hope you find more receptive customers. Just keep at it. maybe get some inexpensive but nice sample containers etc and hand out more small samples of stuff to these friend/family members and see if repeated use gets them hooked. Don't go for really expensive containers/packaging, but maybe little foil pouches for lotions, scrubs etc and keep them in hand for those people that seem to not think of your business often. Though it sounds like you talk about it and remind them a lot. I'm still figuring the same type of things out so I'm with ya! Good luck! Ok I went back and looked at the price and I had a hard time finding it at 1st. That might be 1 problem. Another thing I noticed was the picture . In my oppinion it might be better to focus on the products on the top of the page and put your picture in the middle or bottom. That way they see your Fab. Products then learn about you. Now that I have added my suggestions to you would you mind doing the same for me. Have you considered focusing on eBay sales? If your not familiar with buying or selling there its really easy to get the hang of it. I am in the process of focusing on marketing my custom gift pouches there. It gives you access to a whole lot of people searching for quality handmade items 24 hours a day. There is a wonderful photo hosting site with gorgeous auction templates to make listings more personal and they stand out from the rest (I just signed up for it last night...it starts at $3.95 a month for up to 150mb of photo storage). Their auction templates allow you to put up to 14 pictures in the auctionlisting. Its called www.auctionboutique.com I came across it when I bought some hairspray from an eBay seller last week. Do you belong to a church, service organization, i.e. Kiwanis or community group, i.e. the Grange? I checked your website and it is very attractive, as are the gift baskets. Consider donating a lovely gift basket to a (just an example) fundraising auction for a group such as above. It is excellent advertising and as a sponsor, attend the auction, to make certain that your donation has brochures/biz cards next to it on the auction table next to it. Even help out at the auction, they always need volunteers. The silent auctions are really fun. People get into bidding wars over the merch. I'm sure you're very busy and may not have time to participate in something like this. But try it just once. It will lift your spirits and may help with new leads. Another thought...Do you have a local hospital? See if you can get your baskets or even just the small stuff looked at by the buyer. My sister lives in a small town in SW Washington and the local hospital has been selling her jewelry. My other sis, in Spokane, WA has a friend who is making soap and she supports the soap gal. Bought me about 8 or so bars of the stuff. I bathe every day and wash my hands often, (not obsessively) but I won't have to buy any for a long time. Well, it does one good to whine or pout on occasion and I didn't mind and hope you do a booming business for the holiday season! My site is new, but I consider it successful, because I've sold from it. Before I had the site, I sold my soaps at a local farmer's market. Every day there, I would collect email addresses. When I debuted my site, I sent an email to my " soap list. " I had my first sale within 12 hours. This is just an example of the guerilla marketing that we must do to make it on the internet. One email does not a success make; it's just an example. Having to market and market and market, over and over and over, takes a lot of perseverance. I think that's key. That, and getting lots of links to your site, which helps it to pop up on Google. If you can rank high enough to get a STORE on ebay I think that is where the money is. I think we are all just being hard on ourselves. What I do to get traffic is alot of and also Mommy Websites are awesome for getting attention to your products. I dont know if any of you want to do something similar to what I have been doing but I have my Reg Retail Price of my products and them I also have my wholesale/ Rep/ distributor price of items. I allow women to buy and resell my itmes in anyway they want. Unlike K and Avon I dont tell them how and where they can sell etc. This has made a HUGE difference. I tried to think of it as there business not just mine. I dont do the recruiting thing with them. I just reward them with a free bottle of lotion ( 2 oz ) if they purchase each month etc. Just a thought to help boost your sales. Ask your friend if that is available at her school or call the school to find out who to ask that is involved. The ones with the cute little round ball on the top. Im going to fill them with the leftover lotion I have after making my Normal Orders and sell them as samples on my website and also use them to pass out to potential Customers along with a Business card. I got mine at E D Luce Packaging for around 23 cents each. That reminds me does anyone here have a good source for 2 or 2.5 oz bottles? I want the normal round ones. My mom is my BEST customer. My sister, who LOVES bath and body products, doesn't even know what I make! She is so scarred she'll have to buy something. So what does she do??? I tried for more than 20 years to get my seizures under control with drugs with no success at all.
