Hi

I am new to this list today.

Can anyone offer any advice about treating epilepsy using a

paleolithic diet. I am hoping to reap the benefits (for my 12 year

old son who has up to 100 seizures a day) of a ketogenic type diet

but not the conventional type of ketogenic diet. We do not eat any

dairy or grains or legumes or processed foods.

Has anyone has any success using a paleolithic diet that induces

ketosis? I am hoping I can try low charbohydrate fruit and

vegetables and fatty meats plus fresh coconut (not processed coconut

oil) and nuts plus supplementation with EPA and DHA to induce ketosis.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers

Anne

Hi Anne

My daughter has been on the Ketogenic Diet for 4 ½ years.

She has many food sensitivities so does it dairy and egg free.

The diet can certainly be adapted to whatever food/oils you wish to use.

Stanford have a meal planner for the diet that you can download for

free. Whilst it has many foods already in it, there is provision for

you to add any specific ones that you may wish to use also.

Kind regards

Jill

Hi

Do you mean medications or alternatives? My son is not medicated but

I have spent the last 6 months or so on the internet for hours in the

middle of the night whilst the children sleep (with my baby in a

sling) with many nights of only two hours sleep searching for ways to

help his epilepsy.

I have looked extensively into the use of long-chain essential fatty

acids such as EPA and DHA and are now supplementing my son with

these. The DHA is now starting to get some consideration in relation

to it's possible help with epilepsy. It is considered to have an

effect similar to valproic acid in that it helps with regulating

electrical discharges in the brain.

I have also looked into melatonin and how important it is to sleep in

a darkened room so that we produce more melatonin during our sleep.

Also how we should all be going to sleep when it gets dark and

awakening with the light. It seems that the same 10 hours sleep from

11pm to 9am is much less effective and creates less melatonin than

the same 10 hours say from 8pm to 6am. This is important for all of

us but we are much more careful with our son with epilepsy that he

gets to sleep early and that there is no light on whilst he is

sleeping.

I have also been looking into all the other nutrients considered

relevant to epilepsy such as taurine, vitamen E, etc, etc.

I am now introducing the paleolithic diet using high fat meats and

coconuts hoping to create ketosis. We have been vagans for 12 years

so this is a huge change for us. Unfortunately my son, though he

never ate junk food or processed foods or grains etc, did eat lots of

carbohydrates such as popatoes, dried dates and bananas. He lived on

lots on carbs and now I believe a high carb low fat diet is harmful

and we are going for low carb and high fats.

Time will tell....

Hope I've answered your questions.

Cheers

Look for epelepsy on those, see what you think, use all your knowledge and

lump it together. Hope this helps
