Guest guest
Dr. Ken Stoller, MD is a frequent contributor to the listserv. From http://www.vee2.net/business/42-business-news/6682-kewa-pueblo-and-hyperbaric-me\ dical-center-of-new-mexico-to-open-hbot-center.html Kewa Pueblo and Hyperbaric Medical Center of New Mexico to open HBOT Center Dr. Stoller, who pioneered the field of hyperbaric medicine in Northern New Mexico, will become the Medical Director of the new hyperbaric facility on the Kewa Pueblo when it offically opens on October 15th. Dr. Stoller is the medical director of the Hyperbaric Medical Center in Santa Fe (www.hbotnm.com) as well as the San Francisco Institute for Hyperbaric Medicine (www.sfhbo.com) and the Hyperbaric Oxygen Clinic of Sacramento (www.hbot.info). Kewa Pueblo leaders became aware of the potential of what hyperbaric oxygen could do for pueblo residents when Dr. Stoller made a presentation at the annual meeting for the National Foundation for Woman Legislators held last year in New Mexico. There is great concern at the pueblo about how the large number of diabetics on the pueblo are treated. New Mexico has the highest per capita amputation rate for diabetic ulcers. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) prevents 75% of major amputations in this population. Medicare requires diabetic foot ulcers to already be infected to the bone or have gangrene before they will reimburse for HBOT, but by then it is often too late. By taking control of the type of patients they can now treat the Kewa Pueblo hopes to treat diabetic foot wounds with HBOT well before the point of no return making amputation inevitable at a great cost to the patient as well as the family and society. HBOT is also being recognized for treating Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and PTSD as well as stroke and other wounds of the brain. With HBOT it matters not where the wound is, the hyperbaric oxygen will facilitate healing. Leaders of the Kewa Pueblo are also interested in treating brain injuries and have been getting calls from Native American Reservations outside of New Mexico who want their Veterans with TBI/PTSD treated and are prepared to send them to the hyperbaric facility at the Kewa Pueblo. Dr. Stoller has treated several Iraqi vets including Andy Chavez (West Point Grad) and Schei (featured in a Tom Udall campaign ad). He is also treating several retired NFL players with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, such as Wayne Hawkins (Oakland Raiders) and Visger (San Francisco).
