Guest guest
Hi Dionne, What kind of trouble are you having? Do you need help with sig codes or with the doctor's handwriting? Doctor's and most of their assistants are notorious for bad handwriting or neglecting to put important information on the written Rx (like strength of the drug or quantity to be dispensed.) That's something you just have to learn as you go along. Ask the people you work with for help. I find that certain doctor's have patterns as to how they write their scripts. Maybe it's the same where you work. If it's sig codes you need help with, they need to be memorized. Try getting yourself a little pocket sized notebook and writing down the sig codes you are having trouble with and use it for reference. In a short while you see that you really don't need it anymore. -- To love what you do and feel that it matters - how could anything be more fun? -- Graham .. . . for my heart rejoiced in all my labour . . . Guest guest
Hi J, Are you tired? Now you have a BS in Pharmacy!!! Quite a step up from that BS in Biology in a few short key strokes. -- To love what you do and feel that it matters - how could anything be more fun? -- Graham .. . . for my heart rejoiced in all my labour . . . Ecclesiastes 2:10 -------------- Original message -------------- From: Jeanetta Mastron <rxjm2002@...> Dear Dionne, Start with Medical and Pharmaceutical Terminology Tutorials and lists from THIS site. Also I have my own Prescription Reading Tutorial that I created. I have listed sites that that can help you. In addition I have found that Rx Insider, for the small amount of money I think about $40, is good for Rx script reading of difficult scripts. I am not sure if it is good for beginners or not. But I suggest that you first learn the abbreviations for pharmacy and medical terminology before you spend your money. RxInsider has a sample tour that you can do to see if you want to pay for it. Remember books for $30 to $50 can teach you much and you do not need to pay $200 to $1500 just to learn something that a book can teach you with feedback from a FREE site. IF your state however requires education and graduation, then that is a different story. By all means go for and complete an accredited pharm tech program. This will cost you, as it should, because you would be paying for a full course- not just an overview that books and this site provide - and you would also be meeting the state requiements. Hopefully you would get hands on mock labs and an externship. Hope this helps you. Please let me know what you do chose to do Respectfully, Jeanetta Mastron CPhT BS Pharmacy Founder/Owner Mrs Dionne Marie Fields <dionne_fields@...> wrote: i currently work at a local drug store, and i need help with reading rx. do you no if there is a program i can use to train on at home(online or offline). thank you dionne
Guest guest
Dear , YES I am very tired. I was NOT going to tell the group, but now because of my error in signing BS Pharm instead of BS Chemistry, I guess I will explain why I am so tired. My mother is 91 going on 92. She had emergency surgery last night at 5pm at a Kaiser in Riverside, Ca. The surgery was for an infected abcess in the lower abdomen just above the pubic area. They did NOT keep her overnight. She has diet/PO med controlled diabetes. Every hosp tech knows (should know) that any/every pt is under stress especially those with surgery and dieabetes and this can cause sugar levels to go up. They also know that diabetics do not heal well or fast and their immune systems are not good. For these reasons alone she should have been kept overnight. Any aged and diabetic pt not just my mom! Any way she got up at noon to use the bathroom and the incision openedd up again. so she went back to ER for a 'mopping up' and change of dressing. They expect my sister to change it 3 'xs aday. She and I can not stand the sight of blood. I should be in bed, but I have too many messages to answer that I did not get to last night. Well that is my story and I am sticking to it! I have NO clue WHY I put Pharmacy! But I can say that this past weekend a friend told me that I should have one as I know so much about pharmacology. I laughed as I could only wish! Any way sorry to those who may have read it and thought it is true. I do not have a BS in pharmacy but I do have one in chemistry. Guest guest
Hi , Are you getting your protein in? It's very effective at keeping the huger from driving you crazy. Some clear liquid proteins are New Whey, Isopure, and Unjury. Also, to me the 2nd week of clear liquids was easier (and that was only last week, so my memory on this is still sharp!) I thought full liquids was going to be just grand, but I'm not even that hungry even for the new things I can add to my list. I think my stomach has given up on getting any solid food. Cheer up! Better days are coming. = ) Eileen
Guest guest
Dear , When I was on the clear liguids, I found that as long as I was getting plenty of protein, I wasn't hungry. At first I used Isopure, in prepared bottles from GNC- ( clear liquids) comes in lots of flavors, and has LOTS of protein- 40 grams I seem to recall. The protein REALLY kept me from being hungry, in a way that no amount of fat free chicken broth or sugar free jello seemed to. Good luck, and hang in there.... Guest guest
, Just stick with it, it will happen,I promise. Try not to cheat because your band needs times to heal. You don't want to hurt yourself or damage your band. Believe me I know how hard this stage can be. Do something to take your mind off of it. I tried not to watch TV alot because that is when I always want to eat. I would get out and walk or SHOP. Maybe some kind of project, crafts or whatever you like. You will lose just give it time. Guest guest
, you can get through “bandster bootcamp”!! Everyone feels like a failure at this stage but you will be rewarded if you stick to it. Please stay off the scale, it will only depress you. Concentrate on healing and sticking to the post op diet. Guest guest
. This is part of the problem with the old-timers glossing over the misery of recovery period or slightly exaggerating their actual weight loss. It gives those of us who have yet to go through it a false sense of what should be happening. I am only 15 days out and know EXACTLY what you are feeling right now. Eileen (who was banded the same day as me) is right about the first week being more difficult than the second. And please do get plenty of protein, it will help stave off the hunger a bit, but don't expect it to take it away completely. There is just no way that liquid of any kind can stay in your little pouch long enough to keep you from being hungry for very long. But we do need healing time and have to suffer (YES I SAID SUFFER) through this period to protect our own health. As far as not losing any weight so far, remember each body is different and frankly the larger you are to begin with the more excess water weight will fall off initially. Please don't be discouraged by the claims of " bandsters " losing 15 pounds overnight and everyone else's huge initial success. Your body will adjust to losing the weight slow and steady over a period of time, and this is actually a healthier way to lose the weight. Keep to the post op diet, it is not only beneficial to your triumph in the long run, it is essential for your health and healing. Remember, the outside of you maybe scabbed over, but the inside of you was injured also and needs it's rebuilding time. > > All, > > I had my surgery last Friday. I am having a hard time not eating. Guest guest
I have not had the surgery yet, but I can only imagine that going from one day where you are getting to eat anything/everything you want to a liquid diet is a shock to your system, surgery or no surgery. You are used to having that immediate gratification, and now not only are you not getting that but you are healing postop. This is probably like any other "diet" in that you are going to feel that hunger until your body adjusts. I can only imagine what you're going through because I'm not on that side of it yet, but I hope you stay on course and picture that goal in your head and it'll be over before you know it! Guest guest
whats with the comments about old-timers? I didn't lose a ton of weight in the beginning like some. It was slow and I hated the liquid stage. I really had no problem with my recovery though. I was very surprised I felt fine. But some people have a hard time and take a little longer to recover. We must all remember that everyone is different and the Lap-band experience is not the same for everybody. I was also very discouraged in the beginning and stepped on the scale all day long. We should no be slave to that nasty scale and just do the best we can and have patience. Guest guest
Miamiangel888, I don't usually do this sort of thing but you have crossed a line that I am not sure you should have crossed. I take great offense to several things you wrote in your comments to . First of all, NO ONE glosses over the misery of the recovery period. We have all called it loving names like the Clear-Liquid-I-Want-To-Kill-Somebody-Diet or the clear liquid concentration camp diet. Not one person would ever say those two weeks are easy because they are pure hell. Then, you have the nerve to say that some of us exaggerate our weight loss! You need to do alot of reading of the archived messages on this board before you come right out and make such a bold statement. Think about how stupid that sounds! Why would we do that??? Are you that ignorant to believe that any of us would lie about our weightloss? We post on this messag board so that others who are interested in more than themselves can have an idea how others are doing. No one loses weight in the same way or at the same rate but I can assure you that what you said is just not true. I have to speak to this because, as Nina will honestly tell you, I am one of those who has lost weight very, very quickly. And, I didn't have as much to lose as many others. In fact, my goal was to lose 90 pounds. I have 20 more to go and I am 6 months out of surgery. This is true. It works but it has worked because I HAVE WORKED MY ASS OFF TO MAKE IT WORK. I hate exercise but I do it every single day whether I want to or not. I get in every single gram of protein I need every day. I do not drink with my meals. I do not stick with strickly soft foods, mushies, milkshakes. I eat REAL food. Even if my band or my pouch seems to want more, I know where I should stop and I stop. I tell you, you have an awful lot of nerve saying that we exaggerate. I have worked way too hard with my band to have someone like you, what, 2 weeks out???, come on here and blast those of us who have been successful. There are others..., Penny, , etc. who I'm sure don't appreciate your accusations one bit. I sure hope doesn't put too much stock into what someone with your insight says. You have no idea yet....you are a mere baby in the world of living with a lapband. My suggestion to you, , is to email some of the people on this board who have a bit more experience than Miamiangel to find out what life is really like. None of us gloss over things....perhaps we just have a more positive attitude. And, as I always say, LIFE IS GREAT no matter how difficult some days may be when it comes to our lives with the band!!! It's not all a bed of roses but it beats the hell out of life before! Guest guest
Jenni, I normally don’t do this either but I have to say THANKS. When I read that post I was a little offended too. #1, this is the second time we have been blamed for “glossing over” the post op period. I don’t recall anyone EVER glossing over what I lovingly call “bandster boot camp”. In fact, I don’t recall miamiangel888 ever asking me my opinion of the post op diet. You are right, everyone is different. Some people are tighter right out of surgery and aren’t as hungry. While others like me were wide open and were starving to death LOL. I post on my web site so others can see exactly what I had to go through. I think maybe this person just hasn’t read enough posts on here to really get a good idea of what the rest of us have been through. I don’t want to offend anyone but if that person would like to email me privately I am always available for advise. I am not the perfect bandster but I can sure answer questions the best that I know how. Guest guest
I don’t remember seeing anyone who said they lost 25 to 30lbs in a two week period. If I missed it, please re-post or copy it for me. I think I and a lot of the “Old timers” have made sure and told people any weight loss during the healing phase is a Bonus and not to be “Expected”. I have never seen anyone say they enjoyed the liquid diet phase. The person that told the new person to get in as much protein was letting that person know they won’t be as hungry, which is true. Also false is your statement that a person can’t feel full with liquids. Right after surgery, some people are so tight that they do feel full after drinking a cup of broth. No one on this list has anything to “sell”. We are all here posting our experiences and hoping to get some advice when needed. Are you sure you aren’t referring to other lists when you make these statements? You have only been on this list for 1 week and 5 days under your current username. Unless you were joined under another name for several months, how can you make such assumptions so quickly? I researched my surgery through three years and several seminars. I belong to groups here in my area and actually KNOW and have watched REAL lap-band patients over these last three years. NOT ONE OF THEM LOST 25 TO 30 POUNDS IN A TWO WEEK PERIOD !!!!! The many various doctors I have spoken to (in-depth) and discussed these phenomena's with also assure me that they are slight to gross exaggerations. Joe (who was the heaviest patient I've seen over these years at 457lbs) lost the most I have witnessed and that was 19lbs in a two week turn around. I have read the archives and I dislike the intimations that as soon as you have your surgery you'll be down some ridiculous amount of weight in just a few days. Leading neophytes to believe they are failing if they aren't. I have read the archives and I find it objectionable that the posts ALL seem to say things like, " I actually enjoyed the liquid diet phase. " and " it really wasn't that bad. " and the ever popular, " with liquid protein I wasn't hungry at all " . Those statements my dear friend, are flat out LIES !!!!! It IS difficult (at varying levels for everybody)! You ARE going to be hungry! No amount of liquid can maintain a " full " feeling for any length of time. And you MAY only lose a couple of pounds initially, and IT IS NOT BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE WORKED THEIR BUTT OFF AND YOU DIDN'T! It is simply because EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT! No one begrudges when someone does well. My protest comes from the " sell them at all costs " attitude. Be honest about the difficulties AND the successes and people will be able to make the proper decisions about their surgery. YES there is a selective memory loss when it comes to the suffering of recovery and YES there are slight embellishments when it comes to the actual numbers on the scale. Deny it if you want; I am only grateful that I was truly aware of the pros and cons prior to my surgery by factual witnessed experiences, or this message board would have given me a false sense of reality ! > > > > All, > > > > I had my surgery last Friday. Guest guest
Don't get your tail-feathers in a ruffle now.. I'm glad to see you researched the band extensively before going into this! My reality was 14lbs in 2wks, 14.5 @ 1 mos., 20lbs @ 2mos., 22lbs @ 3mos, 33.5lbs @ 4mos, 37 @ 5mos,. 40.5lbs, 45.5lbs @ 6mos, 51 lbs @ 7mos. Over-all I have lost 59 pounds from my pre-surgical weight and over 70 inches in the past 7 months. My expectations were 10 lbs a month ON AVERAGE......so I am ecstatic with my results!! I'm sure you heard in the many seminars....."Any weight loss before the first fill is a BONUS" This holds true to many, but some have done exceptionally well!!! , (hope you don't mind) for example had her surgery around the same time as I ( Feb) and lost 80lbs, EIGHTY POUNDS!!! in 3 months!!!!, That's way more than 25lbs in a month, so Everyone IS different. On the other side, Caprise, (hope you don't mind as well , Has had a hard time getting to the proper fill le vel and I believe has lost minimally. (but we all are cheering for her!!:) There are so many aspects to consider with this surgery, we are really so different with our out-comes, and experiences! Everyone has valuable experiences and none should be discounted. Just when you think you know your band.....POW!!!.....it throws you a curve ball!!!!lol.....Be patient!!!!.........measure!!!........even when the scale ain't movin', the inches are fallin'!!!!!! I'm sure we all can learn from YOUR personal experiences, and maybe some of the info you have picked up along the way. Learn to only gauge your progress on your progress, nobody elses. It's not a competition, just a common journey and we may all need some assistance along the way!! Hope your healing, (and tolerating the liquid phase)well...Keep us updated on your progress!! Guest guest
AMEN!!!!! Jenni! I was upset when I read that post as well. Thanks for your post. Please don't be discouraged by the claims of "bandsters" losing 15 pounds overnight and everyone else's huge initial success. Your body will adjust to losing the weight slow and steady over a period of time, and this is actually a healthier way to lose the weight. Keep to the post op diet, it is not only beneficial to your triumph in the long run, it is essential for your health and healing. Remember, the outside of you maybe scabbed over, but the inside of you was injured also and needs it's rebuilding time.>> All, > > I had my surgery last Friday. I am having a hard time not eating. Guest guest
I don't think we are trying to sell any body....? Is anybody on this board getting paid to recruit patients ?....I don't think so. You are really making a fool of yourself and you should be embarrassed. You sound bitter and angry and that is not going to help anyone. You said what we are all trying to tell you in this last post of yours....EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT!!!! I did not lose quick in the beginning BUT a friend of mine whom was much big then me lost 23lbs in the first 2 WEEKS. And it wasn't all fat it was all the water her body had been holding on to. AND because of all the liquids she was putting in her body she flushed all that crap water that her body was holding OUT. And I incourage you to ask a doctor that. Guest guest
// NOT ONE OF THEM LOST 25 TO 30 POUNDS IN A TWO WEEK PERIOD !!!!! // I agree with you. That is quite a bit of weight to lose in 2 weeks. Since you have done extensive research, you are obviously aware of the " water weight " that we lose. From dehydration to the diarrhea, this is the majority of weight loss in the beginning. It would be ignorant to think you could lose that much fat in 2 weeks. It may be possible to lose that much in water weight in 2 weeks. // My protest comes from the " sell them at all costs " attitude. // Really. You must not have read my posts because I have posted several times that by day 2 at home, I was in the ER with an IV. I was dehydrated and I could not get keep my own saliva down. That doesn't sound like " good advertising " to me. There are also at least 2 bansters on this board who have had their bands slip. //ALL seem to say things like, " I actually enjoyed the liquid diet phase. " and " it really wasn't that bad. " and the ever popular, " with liquid protein I wasn't hungry at all " // Again you must not have read my posts. I hated the first couple of weeks. I thought I would die without food. It really sucked and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy I have never encouraged protein as a means of feeling full (although it may help some people feel fuller). I don't believe we need the extra protein. I think this is something taken from bypass patients and exaggerated by of the popular Atkins diet. 7/18/05 280/180/
Guest guest
, I agree about the liquid stage. For example....I remember e-mailing Nina and asking her if I could move on early from the liquid stage and have something more filling because I felt weak and tired...really I also thought I would die.....lol. And now when I think back I remember how hard to liquid stage was. And every time I get a fill I am on liquids for two days (that's what my doc here in California wants me to do. And as we all know all docs are different too) so I am reminded of the liquid stage and it is not something I can forget or "gloss over". So anywho, I agree with you and I felt the same. Guest guest
Unmm, Why are you getting offended? If you dish it you should take it. I have be posting here for about 7 months and I cant recall anyone ever stating that the first 2 weeks were easy. If anything I remember getting most of my 2 week liquids, if not all tips from these gals. They have taught me the pb dance and gave me information about what bra to wear after surgery. WE are real women sharing stories. Some success and some not. I am very glad that these peolpe are here so we can help eachother. Everyone makes their own mind up when it comes to the band. They have nothing to gain if someone chooses to get banded. And everyone is different with the recovery period. I was hungry day 1. Others did not get their appetite back until 4,5 and 6 weeks. I have even met one lady who was 6 months out and just got hunger pains again. ~KIra ---- miamiangel888 <miamiangel888@...> wrote: > > Before you get on your high horse about my being a " baby " in the > lap-band world, you might want to know from where you speak! Guest guest
All I have to say is that YOU have an awful lot of nerve. Just how long have YOU been on this particular message board? And how long have YOU lived with a band??? There are plenty of us who did months....years of research before going through this surgery so don't pat yourself on the back too hard. You are no smarter than the rest of us. Why are you so incredibly negative??? There is not one single person on this board who would ever try to simply "sell" the lapband procedure. All of us are real people and all of us have a different story but all of them are true. But you know what? I don't really care what your comments are. I've done exceptionally well and I am proud of my successes. When you get a little further along and have learned to deal with your band maybe you can feel the same way and you won't be so negative anymore. Good luck to you!
